7TWO: day one

It was 'Time' yesterday. So how did 7TWO fare on its first day?

7tDay One for 7TWO was a modest debut -but then, nobody, including Seven execs, was expecting it to make a big splash just yet. It will take some time to create awareness, and its better titles are not until mid-week anyway.

7TWO finished with 1.8% compared to GO! on 4.2%, ONE had 2.1%, ABC2 0.4% and SBS2 0.3%.

82,000 watched the channel launch at 12pm, with 88,000 averaging for the Michael Jackson concert that followed.

But Seven had a huge Sunday share overall.

Seven had a clean sweep of the top five programmes on Sunday night, with The Force #1 with 1.51m viewers. Who would have thought a factual about cops on the beat could be so strong this long after its debut? Or is it that viewers are unhappy with alternatives? It thumped 60 Minutes on 964,000 and Australian Idol on 942,000. Rainforest was even lower on 764,000. Even Who Do You Think You Are? took a slight drop to 382,000 for SBS.

Seven was the only network to pull an audience over 1.1m. While officially it isn’t a long weekend in Melbourne, some viewers may be treating it that way.

Electric Dreams tanked for TEN on just 592,000 -there are two more specials to go. Not enough people seemed to care for the idea of watching Brits doing it the hard way with black and white tellys and a tiny fridge. It’s a long way from the escapism of Merlin.

Wipeout managed 211,000 on GO!

While Nine may have lost its double act lead now that 7TWO is on the scene, even without the new channel Seven would still have won yesterday.

  1. that’s a strange one Bel, does your machine have any sort of return to factory settings option? have you tried disconnecting it from the power supply for a while and then plugging it back in and rescanning again? if nothing works give the company that made your STB a call and see what they suggest.

  2. I live in Sydney and can’t get 7two. I get the EPG programming of 7two but the picture is 7. I have rescanned channels to no avail. I didn’t have any trouble getting GO. Can anyone help

  3. @Craig, Andrew and KFed: TV Week did not include 7Two in the guide for this week (November 1-6), however 7Two is in the list of digital multichannels for next week (November 7-13). It did so at the expense of SBS Two, with foreign language news bulletins omitted from its schedule (replaced by simply “Worldwatch”).

  4. Very few watched because, as I said at the start, the first 24 hours was boring!
It remains mostly boring until Wednesday, due to Melbourne Cup holidays etc … things really get happening on Wednesday … Shortland Street, Coronation Street, and Emmerdale from 2pm every day … not to mention Ugly Betty, Reaper, Heroes, etc …
Until then it is a waste of time to discuss how it rates …
    Jack!

  5. Can someone confirm whether 72 is currently working in melbourne?

I just started using a particular set-top box for the first time since launch,
and on CH 72 “seven digital 2 (or somesuch)”

    I’m getting a simulcast of channel 7.

Am i doing something wrong, or is 72 melbourne screwing up?

  6. Wow I was in the minority yesterday. I watched Rainforest and Electric Dreams. Is it just that I haven’t been watching much of Ten lately or have they not run a promo for Electric Dreams, perhaps it explains the low ratings? Electric Dreams seemed rather lavish too. A major renovation of the house (in one day), all the bygone contrivances etc.

  7. 7TWO needs to move the watermark to the corner of the screen. It’s huge, it’s distracting, and it’s right in the middle of my field of view.

Not that I know what’s on the channel at the moment, since IceTV can’t list any of the channel’s shows lest they get sued… Ah well, guess Seven doesn’t want everyone to list their new channel’s programs after all. Fail.

  8. While I didn’t personally like the line-up last night, it should get better. I also believe it will have a much larger audience share than Go does because of all the cross promoting. I don’t see much promotion on Nine for Go, but I am seeing a Lot of promotion on 7 for 7Two. That’s the good thing about it not being a different name, people will already know the brand “Seven” and will watch it because of it.

  9. As a child of the 70’s, I thought “Electric Dreams” was hysterical!
It was quite nostalgic for me, remembering how it was growing up!
    So, I actually enjoyed it.
(But then I usually do like what a lot of others don’t!) 😉

  10. Power Rangers is on 6 eps a week but I say 12 eps a week would be better.

The series ran forever – 1993 to 2009 – and Seven must a massive library of eps.

It beats old B&W films seen on Monday morning!

  11. First thing on this channel was Packed To The Rafters’ Hugh Sheridan’s lame music clip… wow Channel 7 starting with cross promotions already? Nice work…

  12. everyone dissed GO! before it started, and look at it now
give 7TWO a few weeks and it’ll grow even bigger then GO!
if shows like heroes were rating 400k+ in a 10.30 slot on 7, then it should easily get 300k+ on 7TWO in a prime 8.30 slot. you’d assume that viewers that follow a show such as Heroes would be savy enough to have a STB or digital TV. Same goes for Ugly Betty.
With next weeks movies being Kate & Leopold then Kill Bill Vol 1 and some advertising during the week on both 7 & 7TWO they should pull better numbers

  13. I’ll reserve judgement on Electric Dreams but not looking good so far. Unfortunately, anything other than boring crap seems to be offered mainstream tv’s radar. Hire the same weathered faces with nothing constructive to say (i.e. don’t pay for a decent scripteditor or writer).

7TWO ain’t that bad. I watch GO a little and 9 not at all and I think this will be the same. Infact other than ABC, I watch more of the second channels than the main established channel. Goes to say my viewing habits are not mainstream although this includes Wipeout and F1.
