  1. Les Murray is the worst football commentator I’ve ever seen or heard. Coming from the UK I’m probably a bit spoilt for choice (although some there are a bit woeful as well).

To have him as the main anchor though is just embarrasing. Australian’s have told me that they hold him in high regard and a lot have a ‘soft spot’ for him, but his insight into the game is laughable and his knowlege minimal.

I watched quite a lot of the Champions League coverage on SBS last year and Murray would invariably drift off mid-sentance. Sometimes he seems positively bored. He’d utter things such as ‘and now over to Old Trafford the home of Liverpool, errr Man United’.

It’s painful watching him and such a shame especially with SBS being the only free-to-air supporter of football in Australia.

I believe he’s been at the helm for some time, but it’s surely time to replace him with someone knew and more knowledgable before the World Cup starts. It would be a shame if he comes out with some of his howlers and embarrases SBS. There will be a lot of focus on him especially if Australia has a good run in the compeition (which I hope they do, although I’ll obviously be supporting England)

Craig Foster is ok and at least he seems to know the game and make some interesting points occasionally. Even he’s no Alan Hansen though.

  2. I’m a big football/soccer fan, but I can see why people find it boring. However the fact that the scores are quite low compaired to other sports makes it more competetive and close. A goal a worth a lot more than say an AFL goal or a 2 pointer in basketball. I do like those sports too but you may as well just fast forward to the final quater!

Also its a true world team sport. I like aussie rules and rugby league too but the fact there is a very small international competition is a shame.

  3. Contrary to people like Les Murray who say the sport is called ‘football’ all around the world so it should be called ‘football’ in Australia and not ‘soccer’ – Les will be hosting the “FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup”!

  4. so glad soccer is aired by sbs and foxsports rather than fta, so we dont have to put up with delayed coverage. @steve, no one said you have to like soccer, but that doesn’t mean others shouldn’t be able to enjoy it just because you don’t. congratulation and thank you sbs of your years of great soccer coverage.

  6. @ Steve. You ask “Who the f*** cares?” Apart from the billion or so people worldwide who’ll be following the world cup, I’m pretty sure SBS cares, as they get some of their best ratings at world cup time.

  7. @Steve, must have too much time on his hands, why would u read a post about football if you hate it so much?

I’ll be watching it, it sets up all the possibilities and builds up the 6 month anticipation for the event.

  8. Surely there is a FIFA Table Soccer World Cup. Where is it SBS?

@slydoggie: Over 99.9% of people walk everyday, which makes walking far more popular than anything else.

  9. I love the World Cup. This sporting event is so inspiring to hundreds of millions around the world. I don’t care if you don’t like soccer, the FIFA World Cup is bigger than the sport itself and means so much to so many nations and peoples. The theatre, the drama, the passion and excitment.
    Can’t wait for it.

  10. @ Steve: Played in over 200 countries worldwide and Australia is considered the most multicultural…makes sense to me. According to the Aust. Bureau of Stats…

“Of the four main football codes, soccer (outdoor) was the most popular sport and physical recreation activity among Australians aged 15 years and over with 2.6% of the population participating (419,600)….The next most popular football code was Australian Rules football with 268,700 participants and a participation rate of 1.7%. …touch football and soccer (indoor) are not considered as one of the four main football codes their reported participation rates of 1.6% and 1.2% respectively were higher than both Rugby League and Rugby Union (0.6% and 0.5% respectively). ”

Kinda blows your opinion out of the water.

  11. dont care. Any interest i had in the world cup when Thierry henry handballed the deciding goal, admitted it afterwards – and fifa still allow the cheats to go through to the world cup instead of Ireland. A case of fifa looking after the big teams – all too similar to the italian dive incident that caused Australia to leave the last world cup.

Shame on you fifa, and i say that as a life long soccer fan.

    *deep breath*

  12. I can’t believe it’s almost been 4 years since the 06 Soccer World cup, when Australia went crazy because we were in it.

Personally I’m more of a fan of the Rugby union football world cup, can’t wait till ’11.

  13. Who the f*** cares?

The most boring sport in the world. A small minority of people in Australia support soccer and yet you would think it’s out national sport they way the media goes on.
