Heroes for May finale?

sylarSome spoilers: NBC is reportedly pressuring producers of Heroes to start winding down the show, with the possibility of a series finale in May.

“There isn’t much happening with this show in terms of audience, and giving it a ‘final chapter’ feel is something the network is considering to help allow the show to go out with a bang,” an NBC source told the Web site Airlock Alpha.

Season 4, which returns to screens in Australia on 7TWO this Wednesday with guests Zeljko Ivanek and
Robert Knepper, was supposed to revamp the storylines, but the show has seen its smallest US audience yet.

Meanwhile the drama is also set to lose a favourite character following an ‘epic battle.’

Producer Adam Armus recently said, “To say goodbye to one of those people, it’s really painful for us. It’s really a hard thing to do. We have a deep love for the actors and for the characters, and, you know, these are families. These are real tragedies to get over if you do kill some of these people.”

A decision on the show’s future is expected mid-season.

  1. Loved season one and think season two is quite underrated, but season three was just abominable (particularly regarding Nathan, whose character suffered lots of ludicrous out-of-character indignities) and pretty much killed my goodwill towards it. I’ll watch season four, but I agree that it’s time to wrap things up.

  2. It would be great for an end date to be set well in advance.

Heroes made the mistake of creating an invincible good guy vs an invincible bad guy … and then had nowhere to go with the story. So they had to neuter them somehow.

If they’re given a firm end date, they can work to an “end game” and finish with a bang.

  3. @Craig: I’ve watched every episode up until season 4 and can say that I regret staying with season 3, although I did just so I could have a valid reason for not wanting to watch further. It just went nowhere in 3, and what’s with halfway through the season how they decided to start a completely new storyline, doing away with the first half of the season as if it didn’t even matter! It just made me feel cheated.

  4. First two seasons I loved, but the third I just couldn’t get into with all the shifting between alternative realities and back and forth in time, so quickly gave it up as I just found episodes stored on my PVR never getting watched.

  5. I don’t get how people can call themselves fans of a show but not watch (even once) all the episodes, my question is how do you know they suck or not if you don’t watch them?

As for the current season it’s better than the last with lots of interesting new characters, it’s a pity Seven is putting it on 7TWO when some will not be able to see it, I hope they re-play they late night on the main channel at a later date.

  6. Finally. I’ve decided not to watch this season, I feel cheated by the poor quality of season 3.
Also, on the prospect of a main character dying- good, is all I can think, they’ve been teasing audiences with main character deaths from day one, which never played out. Normally I’d be sad by the death of a main character, but I don’t care for the characters anymore.

I might consider purchasing seasons 1 and 2 on dvd, but not past that.

  7. I think these days that 3 – 4 seasons of a show is enough. You can only drag out stories for so long before the format becomes tired.

Don’t get me wrong I love Heroes, but it has been very hit and miss since Season 1.

Having said that, I could see some potential for a movie spin-off at some point – the calibre of the performances would make it very watchable.

  8. You know what? I adored Season 1 (except for the silly final showdown) and persisted with it to this day. But I am sad to say that while the show has been good, it has never been great again where you are gasping for the next episode. Sadly it’s a shadow of its former self, and needs to end. Hopefully the writers can give it a proper send-off.

  9. At least my favourite, Zachary Quinto, has his future very, very secure in the Star Trek franchise … he will never be out of work for the rest of his life even if it is only doing conventions etc …
    Jack!
