Jonathan Holmes: “Pwned!”

By David Knox on November 10, 2009 / Filed Under News 17

holmespwned“Which means that Garry Linnell, and Paul Kent, and their first rate sources, to use a word beloved of the computer-gamers, have been well and truly pwned,” said Jonathan Holmes on last night’s final Media Watch for 2009.

“That’s P-W-N-E-D. And I didn’t know the word either, until I started using Twitter. I rather like it.”

What Holmes was really doing was finding a way to squeeze in the use of the word ‘PWNED’ after a cheeky prompt by some snarky Twitterers.

Scott Bridges had thrown down the call to Holmes to incorporate the word, promising a ‘Nudie Run’ no less, if he obliged: “I will seriously do a nudie run around Brunswick if Jonathan Holmes ever says “pwned” on Media Watch

Bridges told TV Tonight the idea took on a life of its own. “That night about a dozen people jokingly pledged to do the same in their local area if Jonathan Holmes said the word, and then each week since everyone discussed the show on Twitter while it went to air, referring to the nudie pledge and saying things in response to stories like, “Daily Telegraph: Pwned!”.

As more people joined in the discussion, Bridges said Holmes began dropping hints on his Twitter feed that he was going to say it.

Last night they got their wish.

And last night, in the privacy of their own homes and suburbs, naked individuals were fulfilling their promise by stripping down to their birthday suits and giving late night shows to their neighbours.

Some of them even went to the trouble of adding evidence on YouTube.

@The Doctor: If you think it is worth being investigated, you should tip them off – they apparently get a lot of their stories from audience tip offs, and in fact I did this once, and it got on the show. it was only a very minor piece though.

You can do it on their website.

My only complaint about Media Watch is it doesn’t cover much outside of the Eastern (BAPH) states.

Commercial talkback radio in Adelaide is a disgrace. A mine field of conflicts of interest and agendas

Haha – I gotta say – maybe I’m gettin old but I’ve enjoyed watching Media Watch this year – esp the ep a couple of weeks back when they exposed the sham of so-called Local radio in regional markets, the PWNED thing was totally out of the blue to me! That it was a dare makes it even better!

Jonathan Holmes is the best Media Watch host in the history of the show, no question. And finding out he has a sense of meta-humour capped off the year nicely…!
