Morning news for TEN?

By David Knox on November 21, 2009 / Filed Under News 35

ten news2The latest speculation on TEN’s plans to its morning schedule tip a one hour News service from 9am – 10am followed by an infomercial session from 10am (can’t hardly wait for that one).

Rumours persist that Kim Watkins and producer Sandy Patterson were given notice on Thursday but TEN is yet to make any announcement.

TEN’s style is often to release such information late on a Friday afternoon, when there is less time to have it reported and dissected.

But nothing came through yesterday.

According to TEN guides 9AM with David and Kim continues in the week of December 6th.

In response to Belinda’s comment about Shannon Watts. I am currenly a Producer for a TV Network in Los Angeles and i from time to time see Shannon Watts and his wife around town. He is building a name for himself here in Hollywood as the next Ryan Seacrest. Over the past 3years Shannon seems to Pop up on all different Shows Hosting and reporting. He is a smooth Host that i would have to agree with belinda, Get him back to Network Ten in Australia. He was being interviewed on The US Today show with Matt Lauer recently about a documentary on Skid Row that he has just finished. The story was Amazing.
Great work Shannon, your efforts and success in Hollywood is well deserved.

I think they should bring back Shannon Watts that was on GMA with Bert Newton. He was great. I remember when he went to Falls Creek and did a story. He was fantastic and after seeing that segment, my husband and i took our kids there for a week and had the best time. I was in Hollywood recently and i couldn’t believe that when i turned on the TV we saw Shannon Watts Hosting a show on NBC. My husband said, “Isn’t that the aussie guy that was on GMA”? We couldn’t believe it. Channel 10 needs to get him back.

The 9am Show is great as it is with David and Kim. They are let down though by the constant monotonous ads that remind us of our vulnerability and mortality. There is no host team that I know of that can compete with the feeling that these messages give us viewers that need our days brightened by 9am and David and Kim. On the show Kim is warm and intelligent and to sack her would not look good for Ten at all. I think Arianne Sprat and David Kirkpatrick are also great assets they should look after. No morning TV for me if this show goes.

Only One Problem with the Simpsons in the Morning Though and that is except for weekends nearly all of your targetted audience are at school or work/university and the only people who would be home for them are afternoon/evening workers or night shift people that means anyone who starts their work day from Noon onwards.otherwise nobody would be around to watch.

Scott: A better topic is branded entertainment. Those shows that pass themselves off as entertainment yet are paid for by companies and products placed throughout. Weekend arvos are full of this stuff and Foxtel does it too.

Brilliant idea Wes. I miss that show.

  8. playa won November 22, 2009 at 10:12 am -

I will expect them to run simpsons…why wouldn’t they ?

    David,

Would you consider doing an article on the legal situation around advertorials/informmericals and whether there are any limits or restrictions on the number of hours of such programming the commercial networks are allowed to broadcast?

I am sure it would interest your readers as this has become the lowest common denominator of programming (particularly on regional networks and especially in the midnight to dawn timeslots.)

If a network thought it made business sense could it just screen endless repeats of informercials 24/7?

  10. luke November 21, 2009 at 8:47 pm -

    very true Wes! Great idea.

For me, I’d like to see Ten News at 9am as ABC2 is about to cut their 9am news hour for more bloody kids programming. I’m sure TEN won’t leave their 6am or 11am offerings alone, so I don’t think it’s going to be “more” news, just shifted news.

As for the infomercials; I don’t see the fuss because that’s all ’9AM with David and Kim’ was anyway. They’ll just be taking all the advertorial segments from ’9AM’ (which probably added up to an hour) & repackage them into a one hour program. What’s the problem with that?

  12. Kat November 21, 2009 at 7:08 pm -

more news??? Why?? Guess it’s a good chance for Go and SevenTwo to get some viewers. :S

I think Channel Ten should bring back Aerobics Oz Style. There are no other fitness shows on FTA, and this country have lots of overweight people to take care of.

It will be a very sad day indeed if 9am leaves our screens. I adore the show and watch it at every opportunity. My day just doesn’t feel right without it.

No what I would like to see once Oprah Goes is a Return back to Family Friendly and Childrens Television between the hours of 4 and 5pm like what we had in the Eighties and First Half of the Nineties and the Bold and the Beautiful Go back to the old Lunchtime Timeslot at 1pm.
An Ideal News Set Up would be a 5pm nightly,7pm Project on weeknights for those of us who can’t be home earlier for the main bulletins and late night news also on weeknights.
How about Dropping Dr Phil and Give Kim her own lunchtime show. How many of us want to see a talkshow that has no relevance to Australians whatsoever.

  16. John November 21, 2009 at 5:46 pm -

Why not move The Bold And The Beautiful (have a double episode) to 9am (not original I know) but at least different to morning chat shows and news. Ps.If this has been said before I’m sorry.

Having this, only will weaken the Early News.

If I were Ten, I’d be investigating shafting Early News, and re-instating a 1&1/2 hour Toasted TV from 6:30 to 8am, followed by Totally Wild then their preschool product.

Same with 11am, in fact I am suggesting a merger between the Early News and the 11am bulletin, to provide the 9am news with a bigger choice of presenters.

Ten has to prepare for a post-Oprah future, by considering fast-tracking Oprah, to match Nine’s consistancy with Ellen.

It will be a sad day to see Watkins moved on… she is far a greater news person than variety….. maybe her old Seven can pick her back up…… She would do very well on 7PM… she has the capabilities to host and further the program!

  19. George November 21, 2009 at 3:50 pm -

How about The 9AM Project? :P
Seriously though, how about a show with a similar format to The View?

  20. buddy029 November 21, 2009 at 1:54 pm -

Why does Stephen Quatermaine take the place of David Reyne, I think Stephen brought more to the show then David Reyne. Kim and Stephen have a chemistry and the 9am show is so much more better then the other Morning Shows. Ten really should not axe it. Tweek it a bit, new host might just be the injection it needs.

  21. Zambora November 21, 2009 at 1:42 pm -

David & Kim kept me sane and away from KAK and Morning Show.
Please channel 10 do the right thing, give us Kim with her own show or a totally different format between 9 and midday.
    P.S. no more informercials

  22. mikeys November 21, 2009 at 1:20 pm -

I’m happy about a 1 hour bulletin at 9AM, but infomercials at 10? How it’s even legal to play infomercials during the day (or the night) I don’t know.

  23. Burt November 21, 2009 at 1:18 pm -

I wouldn’t put it past Ten to have 90 minutes or even 2 1/2 hours of news, interspersed with advertorials, but they’ll make themselves look totally
ridiculous in the process. It’d be interesting knowing who even buys the garbage
sold by these advertorials on the 9 am shows on 7, 9 and 10 and why the ABA doesn’t ban the broadcast of them, as TV content. They must be making money, to be able to afford to pay (10, 9 and 7) 10 grand or close to it, whenever their advertorial segment is aired.

  24. Paull November 21, 2009 at 10:50 am -

Because people just can’t get enough of ads! Infomercials will definitely be a ratings success for ten.

  25. Ben November 21, 2009 at 10:47 am -

I thought they may do 6am news, 9am news and a midday news

  26. tasmanian devil November 21, 2009 at 10:47 am -

Hmm, when I was hoping for a nice alternative to lowbrow morning shows, I didn’t exactly mean this…

  27. Chris November 21, 2009 at 10:41 am -

i think it is time for a new direction from channels, they could do a form of block programming that has proved so good for go, replay lastnights prime time shows for two hours, i think that would get more viewers then an infomercial and news two hour period.

shame channel’s here have lost the plot, how do you get a job in programming? it seems pretty easy these days,

  28. Jimbo November 21, 2009 at 10:03 am -

Having the Morning News at 9am (instead of 11am where it is now) is a good idea. But infomercials at 10? Seriously, Ten, just think with your brains for once! Maybe a variety / talk show at 10 until Midday might help them? Maybe?

  29. DanR November 21, 2009 at 9:56 am -

Uninspired! Shame that Ten who pioneered that slot lose out again …

  30. Andrew B November 21, 2009 at 9:35 am -

News at 9am – fantastic idea. Followed by infomercials? Why. Will feel like Ten has gone regional!

  31. Andrew November 21, 2009 at 9:17 am -

infomercials? I suppose its income for Ten but it really is just the equivalent of a test pattern.

  32. tom tom November 21, 2009 at 8:15 am -

The latest I heard was that the show was going ahead next year, with a new name and new male cohost. One of the producers was marched out the door though.
All this happened over a week ago so who knows now…

  33. KFed November 21, 2009 at 6:48 am -

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
    Because we need more news.
How on earth do networks get away with advertorials/infomercials anyway?

  34. ryan November 21, 2009 at 5:09 am -

great, just what we need, more news, why not have a fkn 24 hr news channel for god sake!! having the news at 9am will not get me out of bed unlike 9am did every morning.

  35. john November 21, 2009 at 5:02 am -

    Yes we need more news,definately.
I hope Kim stays & yes shake up the format a little, bring back Adam Richards & even a musical director sans GMA with Bert.
    But please no more news.
