Favourites Alcopop and Viewed failed to finish in the top pack. Warringah was last.
On a windy Melbourne afternoon the Cup crowd was entertained earlier by Olivia Newton-John singing “Magic” and the National Anthem.
The Melbourne Cup is traditionally one of the biggest events on the television sporting calendar, last year attracting 2.15m viewers.

2.15 million watched last year but it has to be closer to like 6-7 million in reality when you consider the amount of people in pubs, clubs, office boardrooms that all watch and dont get counetd. It would be great to know exactly how many but that would be impossible.
