So where’s Tiger?

By David Knox on November 12, 2009 / Filed Under News 19

tiger_woodsAs far as media buzz goes right now he’s hotter than Britney. But Tiger Woods will be barely visible on television screens this morning unless you happen to catch him on the Today show.

Woods tees off at 7:30am AEDT, but Nine’s coverage of the Australian Masters doesn’t begin until 12:30pm AEDT, and FOX Sports has the same start-tinme.

The Today show will include select moments of the international champion, but not his entire morning round.

Instead, Nine will show highlights of his first round during its afternoon telecast hosted by Eddie McGuire.

That sent some radio talkback into meltdown yesterday.

The Brumby Government, which put $3M into bringing Woods to Melbourne, failed to resolve the impasse. The event is also a sellout.

A Nine spokesperson told TV Tonight the outcome was a result of broadcast rights with IMG and the draw. The spokesperson said Nine would “love” to be able to show all of Tiger Woods’ rounds live to air.

IMG’s head of golf in Australia, David Rollo told SEN Radio, ‘We don’t want to make it about one player.” IMG also told media morning sessions were never telecast and were not prepared to break with tradition.

Full live coverage of Woods won’t come until Friday afternoon.

Woods’ tee-off times on the weekend will depend on where he finishes on the leaderboard after the first two rounds.

Nine will drop Postcards and delay Sunday’s Nine News if the Masters goes into a final round play-off with Woods.

Please check local guides.

dan dans – could you tell us where you got this information from?

I think it is very strange that one company can prevent millionsaround the world from viewing morning sessions of a sporting tournament on TV.

what next? IMG will ban morning sessions of the 2012 Olympics from being televised???

I’m ticked off I missed a great Ellen interview with John Travolta and his daughter thanks to the golf coverage. Tomorrow Ellen has Harry Connick Jnr and it will be interesting to see if the dramas of “Hey Hey” are mentioned … but of course, we won’t know because CH9 is showing the golf.

Typical. Nine love playing with viewers. They probably said no, because people are at work and some just can’t miss their morning shows! Give it a go nine try for a hole in one!

Couldn’t agree more with DanDans, Mac, Camo & Jay Jay! It’s just too easy to blame Nine for everything here. I’m sure Nine have something to with Climate Change aswell?

Whats the point in having multichannels when you wont use it for your live content!? It should have been on GO! in the morning then Ch9 could cover it from 12:30pm. Problem solved!

dans dans seems to be the one one that understands that this a was decision by the img not nine,

  11. DansDans November 12, 2009 at 12:47 pm -

OMG – are some of your people who post here so stupid that you cant read the whole article???

No morning session of IMG managed golf sessions are broadcast on any TV around the world – Why is that so hard for you people to understand? Bad luck if Tiger was in that session, their rules are no morning sessions – how is this a Channel Nine fault?

Only people with brains comment please…

They mentioned this on the 7pm Project last night, I think it’s shocking and it should have gone to ONEhd.

    Hey David
Any idea when Ellen & The View will be shown today and tomorrow? late night somewhere? On Go!?

What do you expect from Nine?

A few months ago they didn’t show the trophy presentation of the victorious Melbourne Storm team in Melbourne!

Betchya Brumby would be peeved off by this. He spent over $3m of Victorian taxpayer money to bring Tiger to Melbourne and Melbourne TV viewers aren’t allowed to see him live on TV!

The government should step in and tell Nine this is disgraceful!

This is a normal thing with golf, one round int he morning and one in the afternoon, no golf tournament really shows the morning coverage of thrusday and friday.

  17. Ruddeger November 12, 2009 at 9:11 am -

So if there’s a play-off and it doesn’t involve Woods does that mean Nine will show Postcards and not delay the news ?

  18. Johnson November 12, 2009 at 8:38 am -

The morning session of each day of British Open golf is always shown live on the BBC (and other broadcasters around the world), so why can’t Australian Masters follow suit?

  19. Craig November 12, 2009 at 6:57 am -

Does this have anything to do with the anti-syphon laws? Why can’t Nine use GO! or FoxSport do the live coverage?

And what bull-s**t about not making it about one player, they have had more ticket sales to see Tiger practice than they got last year for the rounds.
