TEN will give The 7PM Project some extra airtime over summer.
The show will be getting an extra thirty minutes on Monday and Friday nights in December and January.
Tuesday – Thursday will remain at 30 minutes.
TEN is keen to get extra people to sample the show in the non-ratings season, and as lifestyles and schedules shift there is every chance it will pick up new eyeballs.
Hopefully it will allow for longer interviews too and maybe a few more risks.
So far the show is yet to have a big break-out moment on air, but alas they can’t really be manufactured in live telly. They come when you least expect it. It also hasn’t really had a big news day to chase yet.
The show has been guaranteed a place over summer and into 2010.

I really like the way that ten have given them the time to improve the show and hopefully they will be rewarded for their loyalty. I personally think that the extra 30 mins will be great and I’ll be watching it a lot. From eeading these comments there will be nothing that ten can do to please everyone, especially the hosts, but they have a good formula going and I hope it works out with the extra 30 mins
@ rex – i know it is nice to have differing opinions, I just find Carrie’s to be so naive and immature a lot of time. I wonder if she thinks some things through at all sometimes.
Having said that however, when the show first started I could barely look at her. I have now become ‘accustomed to her face’ and my hatred has transferred to Ruby. Tom Gleesons comment about Angela Bishop last night was hilarious.
I miss Jane Hall, how come she hasn’t been back?
I enjoy the format, but one thing that majorly irks me to the point of changing channel is the constant waving and pointing of pens! Charlie is the worst offender. I noticed it had been brought up on their discussion forums, but they obviously don’t care because the pens wave around night after night. Do they need pens at the desk? It’s not like they need to write anything down…
@ Boogie Howser
Gold!!!
Hughesy looks uncomfortable most of the time and sometimes his jokes come out awkwardly. There even sometimes appears to be tension between the three regulars. Maybe I’m imagining that last part but its just a feeling I have. He wasn’t at all like this on the Glass House, which had a similar format.
Charlie is growing on me. I think his geekiness and his laid back delivery is suited to this kind of show, however Carrie I’m indifferent to. She’s not funny although to be fair, she doesn’t need to be.
Kitty Flanagan is great when she’s on, maybe she would be a better fit on the desk more regularly. Just my thoughts.
This show is seriously going to dent Ten’s prime time figures. Sure summers fine, but if 10 don’t move it to late night they’ll really struggle next year.
David Mott has been quoted saying he reads this board, so I’ll save him some time and summarise the collective opinion of the replies here.
- Charlie is good; he needs to go.
- Carrie is good; she needs to go.
- Hughesy needs to go ASAP. He can stay.
- There needs to be more of Andrew G and Ruby Rose, neither of whom should be on television.
- The show should take the news more seriously because it’s not funny enough.
- Make it less like Rove by putting a live band at the end.
Easy. Why aren’t we all running a network?
Perhaps they should have a timer on the screen during interviews that shows the amount of time left for the story so its not so jarring when they have to end the story (might be embarrassing if they ran out of things to say before it ran out though)
The show went well with Andrew G hosting. I also preferred Jane Hall on Fridays too. Carrie is doing a fine job and having a rotating fourth panelist is working well.
There is no doubt that the talent is there in the show, it’s just about selecting the right stories in order to garner the best responses, whether they be informative or funny.
I’d prefer less stories with more discussion, rather than more stories with less discussion. Also, when it comes to interviews, I think the producer should speak with the interviewees in order to get shorter responses – therefore the interviewees don’t need to be cut off mid-sentence.
I admire Ten’s committment. It’s definitely a show that has promise and can be very good. Dave Hughes Must go. Scrap 9am and have Kim Watkins on 7pm Project. I like Jane Hall as well when she’s on. Charlie, Carrie, Kim Watkins, Jane Hall, Andrew G, James Matheson could all rotate as hosts. See who works best with who. I like the extended Mon & Fri too. I think the Whip-around is absolutely hilarious. And no more cutting off guests.
That is great! I really like the 7PM project but sometimes I feel like they end things too quickly so having the show go for an hour will now fix that.
I’m certainly not a big fan of Andrew G, but he was So Much better than Charlie when he was hosting. Dave isn’t at all comfortable on the show compared to how he is with Kate on Nova, so he could easily be replaced by a rotating guest host. Carrie is fine, the only people who don’t like her seem to be the people who think she’s a comedian and not a serious news reader which has been her main job for years.
@Goonies
Carrie was having an opinion… and that’s what I like about this show. There are times i want to throw my shoe through the screen. I don’t…
a) cos the TV cost too much… and
b) everyone is entitled to an opinion
It’s nice to see someone not just agreeing with what the masses say.
You also mentioned sport. Do they have a sport segment? I IQ every night and granted I may have missed a couple but don’t think I have seen that much sport? Last night they talked about Tiger Woods and talked to the pole vault guy but to me that was news.
I agree with most of the comments on here… particularly about the interviews… but also wonder how do you give people more time to talk when they have so little time anyway? I’m happy to see stars on there rather than not see them at all and this is about the only show I get to see them on.
I like 7PM it gives me a very quick snapshot of stuff… sometimes makes me laugh… but always gives me a reason to find out more about stuff.
@Stan Andrew G should not be allowed on TV, radio or any other media ever again.
I actually like the program and agree with others that some interviews are too short and forcefully cut. I’m not sure if this show should go to a later timeslot, unless people want more stuff for grown ups and not such family friendly show. I’d like to see more Andrew G as well. I think he was good when Charlie wasn’t around.
I really hope more people give this show a chance. It’s not must see TV at the moment (just look at the fluctuating ratings) and I don’t watch it every day but it’s a whole lot better than an umpteenth repeat of 2.5 Men, the absurd Home and Away or the informative but serious ABC News.
I’m actually really beginning to warm to all three hosts after not liking Hughesy for a few months. And the rotating fourth host idea brings some variety and difference. The panelists are discussing things a lot more and actually having opinions which was lacking when the show began. I think the show is actually weaker when it reverts to comedy instead of pursuing further discussion and expressing more opinions, and this is perhaps why people note the similarities between this and Rove (the show). Perhaps bringing in a panelist with more divisive opinions or cutting humour would make this show more like appointment viewing – I’m thinking Catherine Deveny, Marieke Hardy, Robyn Riley etc. although these are just examples and may not be to everyone’s taste!
The issues discussed are probably more “Sunrise” than “ABC News Breakfast” if you know what I mean and it would probably be beneficial to get a news editor to organise the selection of topics discussed and the order in which they are presented. 7PM has improved a lot and I’m happy that TEN have confidence in it. But they should also implement changes to ensure a solid audience which at the moment it is not getting.
That’s season’s greetings from TEN! They put the spearman towards a dart board and said the target is to axe it and they did. They seem to have to juggle to have a high. The Letterman show is best described as a moving funny man. It goes form past 12:00am to 11:15pm at night. eventually it will end up at day break for goodness sake! Somethings are in need of a time change. Judge Judy should be on in the morning! The hours where most kids and teens are actually at school. She has themes suggesting “You idiot”! I think the 7Pm project is just not funny enough. It get’s a big hit story and turns it into a laugh or it just cuts comments to one word each. I can’t believe Rove want’s to work on it, he probably doesn’t see the stuff we say about it! If anything 2010 should start a new decade with fresh content and better laughs! Ten just needs to hope MasterChef judges and contestants for will save their ass form going home!
I think Carrie is fine she just needs to decide who she is, the funny newsreader or the serious one – it does not work both ways. Charlie is OK, but I think he needs more practice, a better wardrobe and to stop forcing the jokes – they will come naturally. Dave is fine, probably the only person on the show who acts like himself. More Ruby, she is the most well spoken on the show. James is fine as he is – a bit player. I actually think Andrew G was a good host when he did his one week stint a while back … what does everyone else think?
What on earth are they going to talk about for an extra 30 mins? What wave and point more pens around the desk. I know I’ve said this before, but it would be good to have a music guest interview and perform. I like Carrie, just not to read the news. I just can’t take her seriously when she reads a news bulletin.
Seems the chorus to get rid of Carrie is growing louder by the day. Also agree with “Sleeveless” Ruby Rose she is just awful and adds nothing but her celesbrity..is that a word
For the love of god David Mott – change the hideous set!! Too much going on with it and the colour is sickening.
I say (again) leave Charlie, not sure about Dave, get rid of Carrie and white Rhianna (Ruby), more James and rotate fourth position to regular members.
I think longer interviews will work well. Lay off the sport – ch 10 has enough shows dedicated to sport. Stop with the insidious Idol cross promotion (BTW I have read rumours that this has been axed, fairly reliable ones too apparently).
And tell Carrie that we don’t live in the 50′s anymore and men and women are supposed to be equal – not scoring points off each other. She annoyed me so much yesterday re the drinking thing trying to blame the pubs – take responsibility for your own actions lady!
This is definately more suited to a 1 hour format but its not working at 7pm. It may work better from 10.30-11.30 and incorporating the news headlines like the Graham Kennedy News Show used to.
At the moment the show is barely fluff pieces they don’t dedicate long enough segments and fly from one thing to another way to quickly. An hour is too much in ratings period but if it attracts these extra viewers they’re hoping they need to ensure the extra viewers are seeing the changes from when they first tuned in to now; they really need to get rid of Carries voice-over it needs a slightly more serious tone and the graphics look too much like Rove.
I realised they’ve changed some things but they haven’t done enough IMO and if the producers and TEN want this show to continue they need to prove to these “extra viewers” that the show is different.
@Kylie:
I disagree. I reckon Carrie is actually pretty good on the show. She’s done newsreading before Rove and 7PM, and she generally gives a seperate opinion to what’s being talked about, which creates discussion.
Hughsey I don’t like that much, mainly because when he attempts to make a joke he always stutters and looks like he’s about to vomit.
Still, I’d say keep the cast members as is for now to see if they continue to settle into their roles more.
I hope channel 10 execs read this blog, because there are heaps of great suggestions for them to take on board to improve the 7pm Project. David Mott would be an idiot (which he is not) if he ignored the advice. In my humble opinion, lose Dave hughes altogether, give Charlie some tips on interviewing ettiquette and continue to mine the great talent in panelists that Australia has (there are so many bloody panel shows on air). Indira, Todd Sampson, George Negus. The regular specialists in health and money work well. More famililarity but also rotation of regulars. It will be interesting to see what is thrown at it over summer.
all i can do is LOL. good move ten, lets bring more of your night downhill
Its a good show – it will even better if Charlie/Hughsey get the boot. Carrie to stay.
I am pleased this show will air over summer, because it means once Home and Away ends I have something to watch , other than Entertainment Tonight on GO!
About time it was given an extra half-hour. It simply doesn’t work in the short format. Look at a similar show like The View. That goes for a full hour and manages to fit a good amount of content and discussion in. I would like to suggest the following that may help improve the show: longer guest interviews – please; can Dave Hughes – please; whilst you’re at it, get rid of Carrie as well, she”s terrible and Charlie doesn’t particularly thrill me, either, he is not anchor material.
I’m with tomothy – Carrie is the weakest link. The less of her the better.
BTW – I am not the Kylie who posted at 1:27pm.
If it started at 6.30, the content would have to be G rated.
That’s Charlie’s image and it suits him being a bit of a nerdy guy.
But a bit of a shake up graphics wise and getting rid of Carrie couldn’t hurt.
What have 10 got to lose by trialling this out from now whilst ratings are still on?
Makes sense if you ask me, its not like there is anything pressing on either Monday or Friday night that needs to go to air at 7:30pm.
Start it from next week.
Also – though I was dreaming, but this morning around 7.25 when I put on the TV it was still on Ten from last night – saw something called the 7AM project – a segmant in Toasted TV by the looks of it!
Glad it will still be on. Also I believe Hughsey won’t be during summer which should lift the quality.
Another idea though would be to start at 6.30 and go to 7.30 the week after Neighbours finishes. The only issue would be the name of the show.
I wanted to watch this show, but it is to similar to Rove (which I no longer watch unless there is a really good guest or H&A are on). The graphics are the same, the voice over from Carrie, Dave Hughes and such, its like watching Rove Jr.
Here’s an idea,
Lose Carrie and Dave, or at least take Carrie off of the voice over role.
Get new non Rove like graphics,
Longer interviews,
Rotate guest panel, including host,
New logo,
Live music on Friday nights to close the show
Charlie needs to lose the vests and tie.
Nice one… at least something worthwhile to watch over summer.
YAY! Thank you TEN! The 7PM Project is great, but a half-hour show with ads is way too short. Now they can finally have interviews with a good length to them, and cover a news story for a little longer.
I must admire TEN for sticking with 7PM, maybe over summer it will gain viewers having something familiar to see each night which is not a sitcom or game show re-run.
It’s make or break now. If the show cannot provide sufficent time with 60 mins for people to speak (or at least say something of note) then I doubt it will last long back at 30 mins in 2010.
Why not an hour long 5 days a week? i dont get it.
Whilst I think this show is rubbish, it’s clearly got a cult following, and it’s good to see a network backing a show for a change.
No no no no no. I really like the 7PM Project (always watch it if I am at home), but wouldn’t watch a whole hour of it.
Like others I too think the interviews are way too short and the poor person being interviewed is often cut off out of nowhere. An hour show will hopefully allow for longer interviews.
I’d do more than that. I would make atleast 3 days an hour long!
This is a sensible move if it’s being done as a test. If Neighbours is moved
to 6 pm, it should also be continued after the summer recess, from
6.30 – 7.30 pm.
I enjoy the show and think it has potential but like Kylie think it cuts stories and discussions off too quickly. Hopefully the 1 hour format will give it a chance to spend more time on things like The Panel used to do.
I too enjoy the 7pm project.
The only criticism is the interviews are too short and the guests are cut off almost midway through a sentence! Hopefully the extra 30 mins will help.
Keep at it guys!
I’m so thankful Ten are continuing to give this show an opportunity to grow. Have been a big fan of the Project since it started
