equalizerBritish actor Edward Woodward, known for his TV series Callan and The Equalizer and film roles including The Wicker Man and Breaker Morant, has died. He was 79.

He died in a hospital in Cornwall after an illness, said his agent.

His most recent roles were in East Enders and The Bill.

Callan was screened by ITV from 1967 to 1972 as a small screen answer to James Bond. He won a BAFTA Award for best actor for his role and returned to an ongoing role in The Equalizer from 1986 to 1989 as a mumbling former secret service agent.

Set in Manhattan, the series was particularly popular in the United States: he won a Golden Globe award for best actor in a dramatic television series in 1987, and was nominated five times for an Emmy.

In 1990 Woodward starred in an American television series called Over My Dead Body, in which he played a mystery writer solving real crimes, although it proved to be short-lived.

He had endless stage roles, including Private Lives in Australia in 1980 and more than 200 parts in television productions for both ITV and the BBC. He also played the title role of Breaker Morant in 1980.

Woodward was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2003.

  1. Callan was one of the best tv shows ever and it was interesting how The Equalizer included subtle references to it, as if David Callan had simply packed his bags and crossed the ocean.

  2. Indeed vale Edward Woodward, how fitting his last role was as Reverend Densham (true story) on the film Congregation of Ghosts, he’s a shoe in to get past Peter now, Ive included the link David, there is a beaut pic of him in the site

  3. very sad to hear the news. Edward woodward was great actor, I remembering watching him as callan, and Equalizer. He made an interesting Sherlock Holmes.
I too have callan on DVD. Sadly noone is releasing what left B/w eps of callan.
He was great in Breaker Morant . Very down to earth man. It was great to see
three generation of Woodwards in the The Bill.

    RIP Edward Woodward

  4. Edward was a fine actor and an equally fine singer (anyone else recall ‘Champagne Charlie?). I hope they continue to release the ‘Callan’ series on DVD. I have a few, but they seem to have stopped. Haven’t seen ‘The Equaliser’ since it was on TV, and would love to check it out again. ‘Breaker Morant’ is a fine example of Australian film making, with a stellar cast. Edward was exceptional in this movie.

I hope he rest’s in peace. He will be missed. I for one and very saddened by this news.

Just two nights ago I was watching ‘Hunter’.

    RIP Edward Woodward

  5. I really liked him as an actor and The Equalizer was a fantastic show. Hope they bring it on again some time.

I remember he also did a TV commercial years ago for timber benches or some other timber product which played on his name.

    RIP Edward Woodward.
