Don Lane and Bert NewtonThe public memorial for Don Lane begins at 9:30am today at South Sydney Juniors Club in Kingsford.

It follows a private service which took place nearly two weeks ago, in accordance with Jewish custom.

His son PJ Lane said the public memorial was a way of saying thanks to fans on behalf of his dad.

“He always wanted an opportunity to give back to the fans, and this is really that opportunity,” he told Macquarie Radio.

“The fans meant so much to him, and I think that’s what this memorial is really all about.

“He would always make an effort with the fans, and that’s who we have to appeal to in this.”

Appearing will be Bert Newton, Rhonda Burchmore, Helen Reddy and his longtime comedy writer Mike McColl-Jones.

PJ will perform a rendition of They’re Playing Our Song in honour of his dad.

Logie-winning Lane died of a dementia-related illness on October 22nd, after struggling with the disease for the past 18 months.

    Looks like a wonderful memorial.
Pity Ch9 couldn’t see to televise it for fans who couldn’t be there.
