Exit Hardy, as another columnist switches off

Just days after the final television column from Catherine Deveny, now The Age's Marieke Hardy bids farewell to the Green Guide.

marieke-hardyJust days after the final television column from Catherine Deveny, now The Age’s wildly popular Marieke Hardy bids farewell to the Green Guide.

Editor Nicole Brady cites Hardy’s other commitments to writing in 2010 as being behind the move. Hardy, who writes for Packed to the Rafters and appears on First Tuesday Book Club also has her own new series coming to the ABC, Like a Virgin.

In recognition of her urbane telly observations, here is an excerpt from her final column.

I’d like to very much thank my long-suffering paramour who has politely tolerated my public declarations of love for Hamish Blake, Matt Preston, Ricki Lee Coulter’s magnificent bosoms and ”the dog from Family Guy”, among at least eight or nine thousand others. While we’re in an entirely self-indulgent mode, I’d also like to apologise to the following people: Mick Molloy, Jules Lund, Sonia Kruger and the entire cast of Bondi Rescue. I’d probably be more inclined to say sorry to Jackie O if she stopped spending so much time with that loathsome fat-head as she does some very nice work saving the lives of animals, but there you go, we all make our choices.

  1. It’s very sad news re both of them. There goes the refreshing view of telly. Didn’t always agree with them but they were always entertaining. Why both at once? so unfair.

  2. @newtaste Lord help us if that is the case. His self-indulgent drivel – that often seems not to even be about TV – is far worse than theirs.

@Mike I don’t think anybody tore her to pieces, they just said “buh-bye”. And your comments involved too much supposition to be taken seriously. I for one loved The Henderson Kids.

  3. LOL@ at the preciousness of most of you

You all come on here day after day and tear the networks and their programs to pieces with nary a shred of inside knowledge between the lot of you Id imagine..then, when someone dares to be critical of the same things you are with 100 times the wit and cleverness, not to mention close to a lifetime of expericence involved in or working in the industry, you tear her to pieces

    Jealousy’s a curse **rolls eyes**.

Marieke, (and Catherine). youll be sorely missed at my house. All the very best in your future endeavours and please pop back from time to time and favour us with your wonderfully unique and witty slant on the industry

  4. i can’t believe people gush praise over Catherine Deveny but can’t stand Marieke Hardy?!? What is wrong with people?? Ms Deveny never had a kind word to say about anything, at least Marieke admits there are things about TV that she liked no matter how daggy

  5. i get a down right good laugh at every article she wrote in the green guide. it is her self indulgence that makes us want to read her column…even those who loath her. good luck marieke and thanks for the laughs

  6. I can’t believe Marieke’s a real person & not just some drug-induced dream I had after taking too much LSD. At least she’ll be happy not watching those awful programs that The Age made her review, while pointing a metaphoric gun to her head. I wish her all the best!
