Gone: Stargate Universe, Supernatural

Sci fi in Australia takes another hit. Standby for Monday night movies.

SupernaturalBoy, that didn’t take long….

TEN has dropped Stargate Universe and Supernatural from Monday nights.

Both shows are now out of schedule, giving the new sci fi just three weeks on air before being pulled.

On Monday night Stargate Universe took 487,000 viewers, leaving Supernatural just 394,000 and more importantly a lowly evening share of just 16% for the night.

They will be replaced by Monday night movies:
Jan 4: The Siege (1998)
Jan 11: Double Jeopardy (1999)
Jan 18: Speed (1994)

TEN is probably working out where to reschedule unaired episodes of both shows…. keep you posted on this one.

  1. How many times are these people going to screw with us. For the love of God, let the show run its course. in the last year Supernatural fans have been denied the remainder of season 4 for what seemed like forever, then news came through that season 5 was gonig to be fast-tracked only to have that scrapped, then they got into the non-ratings period(not so good) at a beeter time slot, then they advertise an episode for the next week to yank it of because they wanted stargate to be on for 2 hours then the follwowing week it got thrown back to 9.30 which defeats the purpose ofnot showing s5when it was originally intented which was 7 weeks after the epically delayed season 4, only to have it advertised again and yankedd away indefinently, i think a good word to descrbe this is bullshit. complete and utter bulls**t.i think they are testing our loyalty because it is so epically strong, but i am getting frustrated, doesnt mean im going to give up on the show, no no no because it’s not the showthats stepped a wrong foot, its those god damn people atthe networks. Comeman im boredo uttamy skull. Tv doesnt cough up much good, there are so few show i enjoy, and none when i am obsessed as much as i am this one.

  2. how have the timeshifted viewers been factored into those ratings? are they in there already, if so how many of those were timeshifted? or are they still coming and not added in yet?

  3. Stargate is never going to get a proper shot here in Australia 🙁

And David, I rewatched these and told as many people as I could to watch this show. Even though it had been out for months. But the people with the Nielsen boxes just must love watching crap instead.

  4. I’m with Patrick… isn’t this non-ratings? Why are they pulling shows which aren’t rating well?? This is their time to air – before Idol, double eps of NCIS and triple eps of Law & Order come back to dominate ratings !! (Yes, sarcasm)

  5. Yes ratings would have dropped but I kinda think it would have to do with the fact that people are away still on there xmas holiday break and have no access to a tv..
It’s crap that channel 10 dont take that into consideration.

  6. Well what can I say except that Channel TEN suck!!! Now I remember why I don’t watch them anymore…only came back to them to watch Supernatural…useless twats!

  7. well thats crap…..drop 2 Great shows for repeated movies…….guess ill only watch channel 10 for the Simpsons….Yawn…..Channel Go! and 7.2 are better anyway

  8. I don’t download, but may seriously start considering it. I don’t like SG:U found it too Voyager-like, but I Do like Supernatural.

And to be dumped for movies they show constantly. Like they’ll rate any better? How sad.

  9. I am so disappointed with Ten regarding this decision as Supernatural remains my only ‘must see’ live and/or by any other means possible show. Being another viewer who has seen all ten already aired episodes in the U.S., season five is fascinating viewing and gaining more and more praise from TV critics in mainstream media in America.

Despite having seen all American aired episodes, I am another viewer who still watches Supernatural when shown on Ten in Australia so the downloading makes no difference to my viewing habits. Unfortunately I am not a rating viewer.

When originally advertised Supernatural was going to have the 8.30pm time and Stargate Universe was set for 9.30pm and although I can understand Ten switching the times due to the first week ratings of Stargate’s double episode opener, the match didn’t quite fit and perhaps would have been better if the original programming remained. Plus last minute switches to programming never helps and seeing different episodes to what has been advertised in both the electronic and print media doesn’t help either. But really who knows, as I continue to be amazed at some of the viewing habits people display.

  10. SGU is terrible. Talk about a BSG wannabe – and that show was equally bad. Can’t wait to see it pulled even if it is the end of the once excellent Stargate franchise.

  11. For Australian networks, i think downloading actually is of help to them. It is only a very very small percentage of viewers who download shows before they air here, and they tend to be the hard core fans who a) will watch again when a show airs on TV and b) spread the word about a show to help build an audience.
As with movies, these are also the fans who will by the DVDs and engage more actively with media around the show. Check out the Channel Ten forums and see how active the Supernatural forum is – and that means thousands more viewers hitting the Ten website and being exposed to their advertisers and other programming.
I agree though with many commenters here, Australian networks seem to have developed ADHD with programming of scripted dramas and they run the risk of alienating an important segment of their audience. Even taping shows has become increasingly difficult as they jump timeslots and networks.
Networks need to realise that as more people can easily download TV shows 0r buy them on DVD, and watch them in HD, without ads, whenever they want, the more they need to work to provide us with a service we value.

  12. Yes all SPN fans have probably sourced elsewhere, I know I have because I couldn’t wait. But 10 really need to look online to see what kind of audience it actually gets, and the dedication of the fans – and how many people watch through the Foxtel iQ and watch it later? I’d be interested to see that in the ratings. If they don’t want to screen it properly – let Foxtel take it on and play it exclusive – they would run the whole season from start to finish I am sure! I hope WB takes it away from them. Channel 10 has always screwed around with SPN. I do hope they reschedule it somewhere – I don’t care where – I’d iQ it anyway and watch it when I want to…..

  13. While I am not really a fan of Sci-Fi, I can see how cancelling this has hurt channel 10 and its viewers. They have said they will be launching a new channel in 2010, probably around April like they did with ONEHD. So I am sure that all these unloved shows will end up there.

Re: Downloading; I would be going on overdrive everyone because as soon as Senator Conroys internet filter comes into place you can kiss all your free TV goodbye. The internet will be wrecked beyond belief and then there will be some angry people. Start writing to the politicians in your area now people!

  14. Channel 10 is crap, I am friends with heaps of Supernatural fans, some that even pay to travel to the states just to go to conventions of it. Stargate could careless, but Supernatural is one of few actual good shows left on tv when you take out all the stupid mindless reality shows and stupid comedies that requires the intelligence of a dung beatle. I watch Supernatural, Ghost Whisperer, NCIS, Cold Case and any show that is worth anything, because the tv scheduling over here is the worst thing I have ever seen, and I am from the states, thank God for internet!

  15. It’s catch 22 again, people don’t trust the local networks (TEN promised SN earlier but changed their plans) so many scifi fans download the shows. When they finally air episodes many have moved on and won’t look back so there are lower ratings. The show is pulled and fans have to wait for them to return or go online again.

To complicate matters for TEN is the fact the local SciFi channel already fast tracked SG:U just a week after the US, many fans will have PayTV or know someone with it all adding to the number of people having seen SG:U.

Looking back it’s a wonder why TEN thought it would work at all in prime-time, I hope it can come back at a later time or on their 3rd channel late in 2010.

  16. ** Tongue-in-cheek-spoiler-alert **

For fans of SG:U on FTA, here’s a run down of the first 8 episodes I’ve already watched on Foxtel in order to save you the downloads:

S01E01: OMG! We’re all going to die! Oh phew, we’re OK
S01E02: OMG! We’re all going to die! Oh phew, we’re OK
S01E03: OMG! We’re all going to die! Oh phew, we’re OK
S01E04: OMG! We’re all going to die! Oh phew, we’re OK
S01E05: OMG! We’re all going to die! Oh phew, we’re OK
S01E06: OMG! We’re all going to die! Oh phew, we’re OK
S01E07: OMG! We’re all going to die! Oh phew, we’re OK
S01E08: OMG! We’re all going to die! Oh phew, we’re OK

It gets just a little bit tired. Surely there’s going to be a better plot soon. Surely? Shirley?

  17. It was only a matter of time as SG:U and the current series of Supernatural are both quite awful. I like Robert Carlyle but his character is too prickly to endear himself to me, unlike James Callis’s sublime portrayal of Gaius Baltar in Battlestar Galactica. The other actors in SG:U are either wooden or their characters too one-dimensional to allow the actors room to move. Oh, and while the series arc looks promising, the episodic plotlines and the script-writing are mediocre at best.

However, I certainly won’t be watching movies from the last millenium that have already been shown half a dozen times, or more.

  18. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… The ratings system sucks. It’s completely skewed! I know a huge number of people that watch Supernatural – and that’s just at work – and yet not one of them is on the ratings system so their opinion (and mine) apparently doesn’t count.

I freely admit to watching elsewhere, but I also watch religiously *when* it’s on. If Ten actually aired the show regularly and didn’t make everyone wait forever, and the ratings system was truly reflective of what people watch, I think we’d see it rate really well.

As for SGU, I watched it and ‘m sorry, but yawn… But just because the lead in show is boring, no reason to take Supernatural off the air.

    Fair Go, Ten!

  19. With the introduction of their general entertainment channels, Seven and Nine are by far more reliable at playing out their niche / failed series. Ten really need to launch a gen. ent. channel for all their failed series. It might actually rate, as a posed to their sports channel which no one watches.

  20. Sci Fi doesn’t rate in Australia, why did they even bother placing it in prime time? It isn’t fair to anyone.

SGU – and all the other shows Ten doesn’t know what to do with, like 90210 – would have been perfect for a second entertainment channel had they not bothered with the dud that is One. They also could have been ahead of the pack and giving Go! a run for their money right now.

  21. With respect to Nine stupidly onselling Smallville to Ten (who did screen it, then moved it to 10HD), I’m not party to the legalities of the arrangement, but Warner Bros need season 8 (the show is already into season 9 and looks like it’ll get a final 10th season) to be aired first, before issuing the season 8 DVD in the Aus market and if Ten don’t want to show it and/or take too long to, then Nine should try getting the rights back and slot it on GO.

The Shield’s final season 7 that’s 2 years old, has the same problem. Ten don’t have a 2nd channel to screen it, so it’d be unsurprising if the DVD of it is just released. I’ve already seen it, as I knew when 10HD was stupidly canned by Ten, it’d be better to resort to alternative methods.

  22. “you blogged – we listened” – yeah right.

I’m undecided on this action. On one hand, i thouht the show was pretty weak. I’m slowly getting into Atlantis over on 7-2, but Universe just felt too much like a galactica knock off.

however – if i were a fan of the show – I would feel absolutely cheated again by the networks. A show arrives to a channel with much fanfare, only to get dumped a few weeks later. And this is meant to be a non ratings period? Oh come on, they really should drop that charade.
