Hey Hey cast waiting for the call

With talk of between 10 - 15 Hey Hey episodes in 2010, now the attention turns to who is in and who is out.

hh2Jacki MacDonald, Ernie Carroll and Molly Meldrum are unlikely to return for Hey Hey its Saturday specials in 2010, while Red Symons hasn’t said whether he would be back, according to news.com.au.

Russell Gilbert and Trevor Marmalade are yet to hear from Daryl Somers if they will form part of the the next generation of Hey Hey.

Livinia Nixon is likely to return as Somers’ sidekick, and presumably Wilbur Wilde. John Blackman would be considered indispensable.

Somers delivered the good news via his Twitter and the Hey Hey Facebook page (now over 390,000 members) which was instrumental in the show’s return.

“Negotiations progressing nicely for Hey Hey in 2010. So it’s hopefully hooray for Hey Hey! I’ll keep you posted,” he Tweeted on Tuesday.

On Tuesday night GTV Nine boss Jeffrey Browne told media he’d been talking to Somers, whilst David Gyngell spruiked the show in his Programme Launch in Brissy on Wednesday.

The detail on how many episodes will appear is unknown, but the tips are between 10 – 15 specials of 2 or 3 hours each (please make it 2).

Earlier this week there were radio rumours that Rove was being courted to take over -an extremely unlikely prospect for all concerned.

Even Ray Martin wonders whether Somers should hand over the reins of his show, telling media / marketing blogger Mumbrella “Hey Hey would work every Saturday night. You’d have to revamp it and maybe Daryl ought to pass on the baton to someone younger.”

  1. after watching the video, I wonder could the dressing rooms have been compensating for certain male body parts? How big be your dressing room Ray? Whenever I think of Daryl, Ray etc, or anyone at nine, I’m reminded of that classic tune by The Fauves – “Every TV Star Has A Dark Side”.

  2. Channel Nine might be producing 10 – 15 shows of episode of Hey Hey, because it’s too expensive to produce a whole season across the year.

Money was an issue when it got axed in the first place!

  3. Have a look at US TV. David Letterman is way older than Daryl, Leno is in his 50’s, Ellen is nearly 53, Oprah is mid 50’s, Barbara Walters would be pushing 100, Martha Stewart, the list goes on. Daryl proved (not that he had too) that he is still a good host, and people will watch him. The new Hey Hey will need to be modernised a bit, no pop up comments, sketches etc, but the crew are fine. Although, Russell Gilbet should go, he was never funny.

  4. @Michael Less Tall Poppy, more Old Poppy. I have no doubt that if Daryl stays on he will slowly kill it, like he did last time. Daryl 09 is not like ’70s and ’80s Daryl – the one we fondly remember. Although most of his jokes are.

  5. Rove? eww! Please keep that untalented dolt away from Hey Hey. Daryl is essential & without him I wouldn’t bother as it’s not Hey Hey.

Anyway hopefully Red will be there and perhaps Molly could do just a couple? I wouldn’t expect Jackie Mac or Ernie to be there considering they weren’t there towards the end of the original.

And I’m greedy so 3 hours sounds great to me!

  6. Well if Daryl is supposedly too old to host then shouldn’t that discount Bert Newton from doing anything considering Bert’s much older?

Hey Hey is Daryl and Daryl is Hey Hey – if someone else hosted it fans would complain and it wouldn’t rate as well.

I’m not a big fan of Daryl but to give him his due he made the Hey Hey specials this year a big success and deserves the right to continue it in whatever format he wishes.
