Cricket opens bat for Nine

Updated: Nine's first week of official ratings will be dominated by the One Day Cricket series.

As we know, Nine’s Winter Olympics will begin just six days after the start of the Ratings year. That leaves the network in a tricky position when it comes to unveiling those shows we’ve been seeing in promos: V, Underbelly and more.

While they can’t be ruled out of contention yet, the odds of them screening before March seem pretty slim.

Nine has now revealed a little more of what it plans in the week of February 7, but strategically leaves more than a few TBAs. The week will be dominated by One Day Series Cricket across three nights.

Here’s what we know so far.

  1. No mention of Hey, Hey It’s Saturday? And which days could we expect Eddie’s new live show with Molloy, Underbelly 3 (perhaps after Customs). Sea Patrol and the others we haven’t heard of?

  2. According to NBN for Feb 11 it’s Adults Only 20 to 1 at 8.30pm, CSI: NY double from 9.30pm. Feb 12th at 10pm has the movie The Medallion scheduled.

  3. The big question for me is, as there is going to be ODI Cricket after the 13th, How is 9 going to schedule it with the olympics?
Will the olympics have priority, or will it be highlights after 2pm?

  4. Andrew B, I would disagree. Most people not really into it will be at work, school, etc during the day and if they miss the news won;t know the results – so are quite likely to tune into a highlights show, if they have any interest at all.
Whether it provides Nine with a ratings boost remains to be seen, because not many have even a casual interest in winter sports and Olympics tens to be the one time the networks cater for a female demographic sport – figure skating and the like tend to dominate airtime and turn away the blokie sports watcher, will the female interest be high enough to turn over from Desperate Housewives and similar girly rubbish.

  5. The TBA at 11pm on February 13 is the replay of All-Stars rugby league game between Indigenous All-Stars and NRL All-Stars from the Gold Coast. The match will be shown live in NSW/ACT at 7.30pm and Qld at 6.30pm.

  6. If the promotions are right Nine will just run the Winter Olympics highlights from 7:30-10:30 (or 8:30-11:30) every night, so there is no point starting any of their new shows.

I believe they should just put in ‘fillers’ or repeats in the ‘TBA’ spaces … no point starting a season for just one episode …

  7. The other problem with the Winter Olympics is that all the live events will be during the day. At night, it is all highlights with Eddy and co. Those really into it, would not wait for the nightly highlights show. Unless some Aussies do well, I don’t think they’ll gain much of a ratings benefit from the Winter Olympics.

  8. I’m not sure whether the upcoming winter olympics will be a help or a hindrance for Nine’s schedule. They don’t rate very well here in primetime, but have the potential to pull big late night shares, and can be used as a promotional platform for upcoming shows.

But Ten and Seven will have schedules that have been established for a month before Nine unveil their full schedule. It will be interesting to see how it turns out.

  9. @Evan, The Olympic weeks are still counted as official ratings weeks, so yes they count. But Seven and perhaps Ten will discount them if they prove favourable for Nine’s ratings. While Nine will most likely include them.
