Gone: AFHV Daily. Returning: 2.5 Men

By David Knox on January 15, 2010 / Filed Under Programming 51

From Monday the Daily Edition of Australia’s Funniest Home Videos on Nine is no more.

Charlie Sheen starts all over again with Two and a Half Men -right from the Pilot episode (which is a bit of a concern for what that might mean).

Will news of his personal life now affect the show’s following?

You have been warned….

An Americanised my two wives.Does anyone remember that show in Australia from almost twenty years ago.

How can this Two and a Half Looneys rate more than the Temptation and long before that Sale of the Century Episodes remains unknown.Did Nine ever think of the people who were used to close to thirty years of an intelligent show only to have it taken away from them at 7pm weeknights.

  3. stef January 23, 2010 at 7:49 pm -

Talk about an OD of 2 n half “Looneys” aka Men repeats. ! That one was for you David.hehehehe

  4. franz chong January 21, 2010 at 6:53 pm -

I would rather them have Ed Phillips and Livinia Nixon back anytime on Temptation or bring them in for a 21st Century The Price is Right for 2010 then have to suffer one more year or more of this 2.5 men garbage.
I went out the other week trying to find a Temptation Game Show Set in the Toy Department at my local Kmart.Guess What Thanks to this Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer Crap they don’t even make those anymore.Shameful

Nine should shove this show in the same scrapheap as the Now Long Gone Channel Niners,C’Mon Kids and Heres Humphrey But unlike those Childrens Programmes Never to be seen again at 7pm weeknights.
It could be worse they use 2.5 men to fill the 3:30pm timeslot when there is no HI 5.

  6. franz chong January 19, 2010 at 7:29 pm -

All they need to do is find some new hosts for Temptation.

I remember as a kid back in the mid to late eighties 7pm was game show time in our home right after A Current Affair with Sale of the Century.Shows like that made us all that little bit smarter.

  7. franz chong January 19, 2010 at 3:03 pm -

Please let these 2.5 men die.I would rather they had gone back to the drawing board to produce a Home Grown Comedy like what we had some twenty years ago and put some Australians into work than put up with crap imports of this type

  8. franz chong January 19, 2010 at 12:50 pm -

This is a disgrace coming close to thirty years after the very first Sale of the Century Episode aired back at the start of 1980.

  9. Stephen H January 18, 2010 at 6:35 pm -

I like Two and Half Men but only for new episodes something different would be nice.

  10. Jed January 18, 2010 at 12:04 am -

@Earthquake, yeah i know, which sucks because H&A is crap and i rather watch HIMYM, but i was just pointing out HIMYM seems to have gained a larger following, i’ve noticed that in my group anyway, that everyone is now into HIMYM. Hope it means people may have switched, and maybe it’s a sign Nine have killed 2.5 Men’s popularity by playing it so much. They did the same with Gordon Ramsey. In one year he went from several nights a week with top ratings, to getting smashed in ratings and taken off Nine. Wishful thinking this is what happens to 2.5 Men this year

  11. David Knox January 18, 2010 at 12:01 am -

Not yet I don’t. Probably after the Olympics.

  12. AA January 17, 2010 at 11:57 pm -

David-do you know when regular AFHV on Saturdays returns?

  13. Earthquake January 17, 2010 at 1:17 pm -

Jed, HIMYM will be soon gone from the screens when Home and Away comes back.

  14. ducko January 17, 2010 at 10:40 am -

I’ve never seen an episode of 2.5 men – I must be the only one. But can you really blame Nine if the public keep watching? It’s all Ten’s fault for continuing to show the abysmal 7pm Project.

  15. AA January 17, 2010 at 12:47 am -

Nine’s got Hot Seat and several Millionaire specials this year (the specials prob. 7:30 once a week. ), I’d doubt they would try the Sale type format a 3rd time around (well Charlie Sheen’s show is very popular with viewwrs these day.

  16. David Knox January 16, 2010 at 6:50 pm -

The show ended production in 2008.

I think Mickey & Donald might want to use a more apt ID or risk contravening this site’s Comments Policy.

  17. Nik C January 16, 2010 at 6:45 pm -

I think Ch9 should show 2.5 men from 12 midnight until 11.59pm every day on Ch9 Third Channel (I would suggest Go! but that would offend Go viewers)

    How bout some originality!!!

  18. Mickey Mouse January 16, 2010 at 5:57 pm -

When Temptation Back On Channel Nine?

From Mickey Mouse & Donald Duck

  19. catherine January 16, 2010 at 2:42 pm -

See this is why I don’t want 10 to axe the 7pm project. My family watches the 7pm project where they used to watch 2.5 men during dinner. Even I used to sit there saying this episode was on a few weeks ago. One day 9 will just run it for hours and hours a night. The sad thing is it will never get axed in the states because it rates so high. Its jsut a shame that 9 can’t come up with an australian show to replay.

  20. Craig January 16, 2010 at 2:03 pm -

@tasmanian devil, this is why I’ve been watching more Austar than ever this summer, I’d say a good 75%, the remaining 25% is mostly made up of GO!, ABC and SBS… not much from Seven, Nine or TEN.

And on a side not after next Monday I probably will drop Top Gear from my FTA viewing, BBC Knowledge has the guys on 7 days a week!

  21. kerry January 16, 2010 at 12:15 pm -

I dont worry i do something wonderful when this dribble is on the screen i turn over or turn off

  22. tasmanian devil January 16, 2010 at 11:53 am -

@michael – don’t you think we would change channels if it was worth it? The problem is there is literally nothing else good on FTA television in this timeslot, unless you wanted to watch the news on ABC or SBS. It would be great if 9 brought back Temptation – a decent show for once in this timeslot. But alas, Australia prefers this, and if you were 9 and had to choose between a show that frequently rates over one million and one that doesn’t…

  23. Jed January 16, 2010 at 11:22 am -

All of my friends have suddenly jumped on the How I Met Your Mother bandwagon and now seem to love that. Hopefully it means the end of 2.5 Men and people are over it.

  24. Bazza January 16, 2010 at 7:54 am -

Anything is better than that godawful dirge on 10 at 7….
I’ll be more interested when 9 starts showing the new episodes though.

Not that repeats worry me. I have this neat trick when there’s nothing on that I like, I’ll share it. I turn the TV off and do something else. Radical stuff, I know, and not nearly as productive as whining, but still….

  25. steven g January 16, 2010 at 5:40 am -

Could be worse though, they could be running Seinfeld. God I hate that show !

  26. steven g January 16, 2010 at 5:39 am -

    Aghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh !

  27. aznfratboy January 16, 2010 at 3:51 am -

SHeen’s offscreen drama won’t affect the show, the show in the states didn’t take any viewership hits.

As for repeats, it’s nuch cheaper to air a rerun of Men, then to produce Millionairre, or anything else you suggest. It cost them around 10k to repeat a Frasier episode, and I don’t think Men would be much more. Also, it’s a sitcom, so it is bound to skew young in terms of viewers, which advertisers all love, plus it’s a spectacular foundation for the start of primetime. It’s also why I’m very surprised that Channel 10 insists on airring 7pm project, it’s getting pummelled and costs them through the nose to produce and air it, why not air The Simpsons, or Friends repeats, same viewership, a tenth of the cost, and also, both skew young, as opposed to 7pm project, which seems to be trying to entice the over 55s.

I could organise a schedule for channel 9, that would make sense, but then again this is free-to-air TV, we don’t even bother to make a schedule, we just jumble the shows and throw them wherever there;s a free time slot…

  28. Damon January 16, 2010 at 12:37 am -

How about Nine show that last season of the King of Queens that hasn’t been aired? It would be a hell of a lot better than putting out the same crap that they’ve been shoveling down our throats for the past 2 years.

  29. Bass January 16, 2010 at 12:34 am -

Goodbye 7pm Project…. its been fun!

  30. Stan January 15, 2010 at 10:23 pm -

I wonder what life is like in most WIN & NBN markets that don’t get this show every weekday? Utopia, perhaps? Anyway, I’m sure the rest of the country is happy it’s back (even if they don’t post comments to TV Tonight).

  32. michael January 15, 2010 at 8:12 pm -

Unless a “whinge-less” button is invented, all you need to do is change channels, folks. Crisis over.

  33. Craig January 15, 2010 at 7:43 pm -

I won’t be watching the re-runs, just hope they make it clear when new eps start up but with the troubles Charlie is having I wouldn’t be surprised if it took a hit in the ratings in the US and was axed.

  34. mikeys January 15, 2010 at 7:25 pm -

Good to see times are a changin’ :?

  35. Andrew B January 15, 2010 at 6:37 pm -

Wow – from the start – that’s daring.

It wouldn’t be that bad if they left the show only 7pm, and played the new ones once a week (when available) but the fact it ends up as much as 10 times a week is a big turn off and really non-creative programming.

  36. tomothy January 15, 2010 at 6:05 pm -

So now for people in the eastern states, they can watch is on either Nine or Arena 5 nights a week at 7pm. For Adelaide, we get it at 6.30 on Arena, so an hour a night now.
I wont be watching, it is not a show I would watch repeats of, its not that great.
Anything is better than Unfunniest Morons Home Videos.

  37. southpatt January 15, 2010 at 5:47 pm -

Nine only shows what rates so there must be a good many people that missed Men
on its 1st, 2nd,3rd, 4th, whatever time around

Eventually it will reach saturation with everyone tired of watching repeats.. and Nine will be hung out to dry – starting again from the pilot might be the death knell

  38. AA January 15, 2010 at 5:35 pm -

Malcolm in the Middle replacing the Simpsons’s usual 6pm repeat eps tomeslot-verty interesting.

  39. AA January 15, 2010 at 5:34 pm -

Guess 2.5 Men does better even in non-ratings.

Any word on when the normal AFHV retuns for the year?

  40. AA January 15, 2010 at 5:30 pm -

Perhaps Nine’s AFHV will soon return on Saturdays soon-where it rates better than the daily edition.
Ciuldn’t Nine cme up with something other than 2.5 Men (eg. a game show, primetime Hot Seat)?

  41. Jerome January 15, 2010 at 5:13 pm -

@ Sillygostly. that’s only for 2 weeks before they go back to simpsons.

  42. vrom January 15, 2010 at 5:02 pm -

I dont care. Seven will start broadcasting the Aussie Open night session at 7pm next week. So that’s what i’ll be watching. :D

  43. Sillygostly January 15, 2010 at 4:50 pm -

@ George: Ten will be airing Malcolm in the Middle at 6pm weeknights as of next week with hour-long airings at 7.30pm Thursdays and Fridays which will allow them to flog off any PG rated episodes.

  44. RichoTB January 15, 2010 at 4:50 pm -

I expect 2.5 men will continue to rate highly each episode. Doesn’t help it has such lacklustre competition.

  45. Benjamin January 15, 2010 at 4:26 pm -

Hasn’t Ch 9 figured out that showing far too much of “2 & Half Men” is gonna cause them to lose popularity with viewers!.

I hope that Home & Away’s return on Jan 25th annihilates “2&HM” in the ratings!!.

  46. vinny January 15, 2010 at 4:21 pm -

What is it with GO! and Nine endlessly repeating sitcoms !

  47. George January 15, 2010 at 4:21 pm -

As well as what I said before, I hope TEN also stop airing Simpsons at 6PM each night.. I’m sick of the networks using stuff which has already aired a billion times instead of being creative.

  48. chris January 15, 2010 at 4:18 pm -

An anagram of charlie sheen : Ah Silence Her ;)

  49. George January 15, 2010 at 4:17 pm -

Please let 2010 be the year that 2.5 men dies. Whether it takes a week, month, or until the end of the year, I hope this is the last year that Nine strips this show at 7PM weeknights.

  50. Peter January 15, 2010 at 4:17 pm -

    Oh god!
    It back :(

  51. Kuttsywood January 15, 2010 at 4:10 pm -

I hope Charlie hasn’t lost his Sheen!
