Grant Denyer returns to Sunrise

Grant Denyer will return to the role that made him a network personality.

Grant Denyer will return to the role that made him a network personality, fronting the weather for Sunrise.

He returns to show from tomorrow as main weather gal Fifi Box becomes the show’s Entertainment Editor.

That role was under James Tobin’s watch, who will in turn fill in for Denyer when he takes time out next month for his honeymoon.

“I’ve had four years of nice sleeps-ins, but it’s time for me to get stuck right back into it,” said Denyer.

Denyer, who will also host season four of Australia’s Got Talent this year, has also announced his retirement from motor racing. In 2008 a monster truck accident that broke a verterbra and saw him out of action for months.

He will also file occasional stories for Sunday Night.

Seven’s revamped Sunrise launches tomorrow at 6am with a new set and format from its Martin Place studio. Look for a new-wooden set, plus red, silver and a new embossed Sunrise logo.

  1. Why on earth do we have to copy America in everything? We are our own country and should be proud to be Aussie I hate this show now makes me cringe they are all so fake. Especially Kochie. A bit of originality a bit of australianality even.

  2. Yuk. Really dislike it. Good that Grant’s back though!
There is no point trying to go hard-hitting like Sky/ABC2, then back to “Infotainment” like Today/E!, it only serves to make you a bit bored.

Set looks really cheap, and having them stand up, then next minute they’re back on the couch, makes me pretty seasick. That, combined with the graphics, will force me over to ABC2.

  3. This is fantastic. The new Sunrise set is just so amazing. I will be watching for 3 hours a day everyday now. I love all the new personalities they have added. Truly inspied TV executives are on to a real winner with this.

    ..
The whole world will tune in, it is just sooooo different

  4. @Kathy

It’s rather odd though that the designer would create such a near copy of the Today Show set (which always reminded me of the Jetsons’ Home, and unleashed the relentless “America’s First Family” adverts), judging by the pedigree his forte seems to be creating sets on shows where there is a sense of home (Early Show, Martha Stewart) or parody (Daily Show, Colbert Report).

I suspect that Sunrise is just about to do the same to Australia, especially based on the relationship between Seven and NBC. Perhaps “Kochie, Mel, Nat, Berretts, and Grant,” sounds better over a chirpy tune than the lineup with Fifi?

  5. why the hell does one have to travel? its just the bloody weather for crying out loud!

geez, give us more weather finer details and less crap. that is the problem with sunrise now, it started off actually informative and now all they do produce a tv version of new idea/women’s weekly.

bor-ing. I watch ABC2 news breakfast now… much closer to what sunrise was like waay back in the day (although that was a little less serious).

  6. the new set looks great. and having grant back will be great.
but as for the rest of the changes, i hope they know what they are doing. kochie wearing a tie? more serious? they seem to be removing the things that made them #1 in the first place.

  7. Seems like a bit of a backward step for Grant. No one seems to want that weather job with all the travelling and early starts. I’ll give him 12 months in it for this stint while they find him something else to do to justify his contract price.

  8. Sunrise’s ratings begun declining when Grant left, will be interesting to see what impact (if any) he has on return.

    I personally much preferred Fifi.

  9. I agree Boy Wonder… if this is “the rabbit out of the hat” it sounds more like “the dwarf out of storage”…
Can’t wait for the new set… it might even have a desk and a plasma screen.

  10. That’s ok then. Fifi is still involved. Phew. But James does do the weather really well and he is so funny since he’s been doing it over the last month. Fifi being the entertainment reporter suits her tough, as she interviews people on her radio show all the time.
