Little known Australian actor Andy Whitfield looks set for US stardom as Spartacus wins a second season before the first even airs.

spaLittle known Australian actor Andy Whitfield looks set for US stardom if this trailer for Starz Entertainment’s series Spartacus: Blood and Sand is anything to go by.

Whitfield, who has had guest roles in Packed to the Rafters, McLeod’s Daughters, The Strip, All Saints and lead role in the film Gabriel, looks very convincing as a hero in this trailer.

The series has already won a second season, provisionally titled Spartacus: Vengeance, and the first hasn’t even premiered yet.

Filmed in New Zealand, the series, co-produced by Sam Raimi also features Lucy Lawless, John Hannah, Erin Cummings, Peter Mensah, Manu Bennett, Antonio Te Maioha, Craig Parker and Nick E. Tarabay.

Stephan Shelanski from Starz Entertainment’s said: “Spartacus delivers on all levels – action, characters, intrigue, romance and excitement. It is the most ambitious original project we’ve ever undertaken, and speaks to the commitment to our subscribers to provide truly original programming.”

  1. I hope Ch9 doesn’t buy this as they are so inconsistent with their programming.
The other FTA’s are ok, but it will be easier to watch if it’s on Showcase without all the Ad’s.

  2. Hi everyone,

So while this is an Australian TV blog, I know there are some Americna readers out there like myself, and I just wanted to let any that are Comcast customers know that All customers can catch a free sneak peek of Spartacus: Blood and Sand On Demand beginning January 20 – two days before the premiere on Starz. Even if you are not a Starz customer you can still watch this preview. It is available On Demand under Top Picks>Spartacus.

  3. Can’t wait for this, the 300 style is suited to tv, as to what it can achieve on a smaller budget.

My one worry is, they have too much sex. In Rome which was an excellent season, the worst aspect was that they crammed in too much sex. I’m not prude at all, but when it’s for the sake of having nudity and sex scenes its pointless. Why not just watch porn? As long as it’s part of the story it’s fine, when it’s for the sake of it, its not fine.

  4. The Aus rights for this will be open to anyone, as Starz in the US who’s behind this, is a US cable network, but if Nine or Seven were smart, they’d buy it for their 2nd channel, instead of letting Foxtel get it.

  5. Coolness!

Can’t wait for 22 January 2010. Or to be more accurate, a couple of days after 22 January 2010 when this show should be available down under by other means.

It will be good to see Lucy Lawless on the small screen again (“Bedtime Stories” was not a good big screen adventure). And from the sounds of it, we’ll be seeing a Lot of Lucy Lawless.
