Today on the rise

Game on. The Today show is enjoying its best summer ratings in more than 5 years.

While one breakfast show is launching a new set on Monday, its competitor will be broadcasting from Burleigh Heads in Queensland.

Karl Stefanovic rejoins Lisa Wilkinson from Monday for the Today show, which has enjoyed its best summer ratings in more than 5 years.

The show took time to issue some ratings results yesterday following some press (including on this website) about Sunrise.

Nationally, Today is up more than 25% on the same period in 2009 and has 3 national wins under its belt on Jan. 1, Jan. 7, & Jan. 8.

It has won each day in Melbourne this month (42.6% share over Seven’s 25.0%) and has won all but one day in Sydney (36.8% share to Seven’s 31.8%).

Executive Producer Tom Malone said, “The ratings are a great tribute to everyone who’s worked so hard through the summer break to deliver the best shows for our viewers, but we’re only just getting started in 2010.”

Due to the cricket and tennis comparisons for Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth are too fractured.

  1. Today’s ratings would improve if they punted both Richards (Reid and Wilkins). Too much Hollywood “gossip” and mindless stories……….and yet they are better than Sunrise!

  2. Karl is what i like to call a w**ker! Its why i dont watch Today. I have been watching it a few times while he’s been away to check it out and its ok but i believe it has copied some of Sunrises components. Also Richard Reid is one of the most annoying people to be on TV.

Its why i will be sticking to Sunrise in 2010. It is such a better program.

As for winning Melbourne, viewers have been sticking to Nine like glue for some reason. Its like Perth and Seven. Still i wont be watching much on Nine this year, not even the trash that is Underbelly.

  3. I gotta say, as much as either show could be considered ‘serious’ – Today wins hands down in the sensibility department (for the most part). However, both shows are completely moronic and will make you more stupider…

  4. @Jenny methinks you have some serious issues to work through.
It’s the yin and the yang, Lisa is the straight one and Karl is the ‘douchebag’….. I don’t think the show could be too sexist considering the strong, together, Lisa steering the ship. I have no doubt you would complain if Karl was the serious one and Lisa was flighty.
And just by the by, I don’t want to watch two serious people in the morning, I just woke up for effs sake. Plus I heart Karl.

  5. I like Lisa but sorry Karl is a douchebag. He acts like silly teenager & at every opportunity lets his sexism shine through, i.e., calling his esteemed female colleagues ‘girls’ most of the time (really irks me). Blech! Why not pat the ‘girls’ on the head & tell them to get back into the kitchen where they belong. But I am not surprised that Channel 9 encourages this kind of sexism. They also do it on ACA at every opportunity as well – even some poor guy who is a transgender (dresses as a female etc) gets the treatment. What is the byline for his story – “Now he gets to go shopping” Blech!
Although Channel 7’s sunrise is not that much better in the male sidekick department with Kochie & his daily “jokes”. What is it with having dumbass male sidekicks on breakfast shows? Sometimes it gets so bad that I have to flick to the ABC2 breakfast show to hear some intelligent discussions between ‘adults’.
