2.3m watch Federerer v Murray

Who likes it live? The Men's Final of the Australian Open delivered the first kingsize audience of the year as Seven smashes the competition.

The Men’s Final of the Australian Open delivered the first kingsize audience of the year, as 2.35m viewers watched the game from Rod Laver Arena.

It served up a 39.7% share to the network, trouncing its nearest competitors: Nine on 23.4% and TEN on 22.9%.

The match more than doubled its competition too.

TEN had to settle on 1.16m for both The Biggest Loser and So You Think You Can Dance Australia -down from its 1.3m premiere in 2009. At least they had a solid retention on a tough night. New House came in at 1.03m.

The Biggest Loser editors managed to edit out any sign of a former contestant facing child porn charges. Rarely did we see a group shot. But the storytelling seemed to leap from the first challenge to a weigh-in a week later. Presumably a lot had been left on the editing room floor. Hayley Lewis is already showing she will bring more emotion to her hosting than Ajay Rochester ever attempted.

Meanwhile So You Think You Can Dance Australia again proved it has the most talented, diverse dancers in the country.

Nine’s best for the night was One Day Cricket on 1.05m viewers. The network only finished the night ahead of TEN thanks entirely to GO!s 3.9% share, while the ABC took a big hit, nearly down to single figures: 10.1%.

The tennis capped off another season of viewer complaints v network defending for Seven, while the nation still waits for the outcome of the Anti-Siphoning list review. The Men’s Final, up from 2.25m in 2009, was live around the country -except for poor old Perth again…

  1. You can gurantee that the coverage would be just as bad on 9 or 10 . Foxtel coverage would obviously be better because it would air on a sport channel however not everyone has foxtel and tennis clearly has a following so free to air coverage is still an attractive option. Also if you want to watch a match it is probably a good idea to stay away from the internet if you don’t want the match to be spoilt I mean surely people are aware of the time difference by now?

  2. It’s 2010 and Perth is yet again shafted. Not a good way to treat your loyal viewers TVW7. In 2010 I can watch it live via the internet and people wonder why people need to resort to these measures.

  3. Agree about Hayley David!

I thought she was great and showed a lot of emotion and an empathy with the contestants that Ajay never did. Obviously Hayley was never as big as the contestants, but the lack of self esteem and confidence can be the same no matter if you have 10kgs to lose or 100kg.

  4. @Teri Bauer Yeah I know it all seemed kinda fast and that we missed out of most of the first week but this is due to all due to the child pornography scandal so most of it had to to re-edited and moved.

  5. i thought that hayley did a great job

it was a bit annoying to have it edited but ten had no choice really it will be good once they get past the 2nd eviction nothing should be edited after that

if i remember correctly ajay wiped away what was probaly a fake tear whe bob told the story of how the teachers at his school called him a fat looser or something like that

  6. yes they got goo ratings. but they are too deluded to reliza how bad their coverage is. as usual it was absolutely terrible

i watched a bit of the biggest loser. i don’t know why these people go on this show too lose weight when they can do it at home. 10 really should be ashamed for have a show like this and it looks like it is digrading

  7. Did anyone else think The Biggest Loser was absolutely terrible? Last year we had the contestants rowing in on canoes to a lush resort and the emotional first weigh-in where everyone told their sob stories. This year everything skipped ahead so fast, there was absolutely no time to meet the contestants or hear about their lives, and the production values seem to be less. Everything was so rushed and terrible. They skipped through the entire first week in 30 seconds of black and white footage!

  8. Still annoyed that they can’t show the tennis live to Perth. I found out the result before the match started here.

I think Hayley is doing really well. She said that she was a bit nervous in the first few episodes. But I coudln’t tell. It’s just the script writing is a bit lame, but that’s not her fault.

I was annoyed with the editing as well. They cut out how they lost the weight in the first week.

  9. Seven must realise this. Ratings for the Open have been down this year. The weak beginning won’t prop up the business end.

If Seven was able to pick and choose what parts of the Open it covered, It would take the two finals only.
