New cancer case stems from former ABC Brisbane site

Another former ABC staff member from Brisbane has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

The revelation follows previous cases of female employees contracting breast cancer after working at the Toowong studios which the broadcaster abandoned in 2006.

The latest employee is believed to have worked in the television newsroom for about seven years in the 1990s.

The ABC said in a statement the broadcaster was saddened by the latest developments.

“It will offer full support to the former employee as it has with all those who worked at the Toowong site and were diagnosed with breast cancer,” a spokeswoman said.

The spokeswoman said the ABC’s response continued to be guided by an independent panel of experts.

“The ABC has worked closely with the panel over the past few years to ensure the best care for those affected by the breast cancer cluster at the former Brisbane headquarters.”

A new headquarters is expected to be completed in late 2011 or early 2012 at South Bank.

Tests have failed to uncover the cause of the cluster.

This story saddened and angered me beyond belief, so I can only imagine how these affected workers must feel. Why is everyone so silent on the carcenogenicity of such high levels of electromagnetic radiation? How many clusters of this nature do we have to see before our government and ARPANSA lower the standards for acceptable levels of radiation exposure, to levels that are adequate to protect public health? Why are these so-called experts denying a link between the radiation these people have been exposed to on a daily basis and this cancer cluster? This is not just coincidence…this is a public health crisis that needs to be addressed without delay. These people deserve to know the truth…their health and their lives do matter more than company profits!!!
