Stokes: “We didn’t talk about industry issues”

Seven CEO says of his Conroy meeting, "We didn't talk about industry issues - we had a general discussion."

Seven Chairman Kerry Stokes today fronted a media and financial analysis meeting but was questioned on his recent meeting with Communications Minister Stephen Conroy at a ski field in Colorado.

It followed headlines on the meeting just a month before the government announced a $250 million rebate on commercial TV licenses.

“We didn’t talk about industry issues – we had a general discussion,” he said this morning.

“Seems to me most people who are (saying we did) haven’t skied before – it’s really difficult to have an in-depth discussion when you’re skiing.”

Stokes added that he was disappointed in Tony Abbott’s claims of a ‘bribe’ ahead of the election.

“Obviously he was wrong to choose that language,” he said.

Stokes also announced a proposed merger between Seven Network and his heavy equipment hire company, WesTrac today. WesTrac is the sole authorised Caterpillar dealer in Western Australia, New South Wales, the ACT and north-western China.

  1. We believe everything Kerry Stokes says – I’m sure they just chatted about the weather. Same when the KRudd stayed at Kerry Stokes private home in Broome. There’s a lot of weather to discuss in Broome.

  2. General discussion, eh? Arranging a meeting in America just for chit-chat? Just before the network receives an unprecedented heavy licence rebate with no obligations at all for how that extra money is spent?

    Uh huh…

  3. Seems to me that people who have skied will know that occasionally when skiing you do things like stop for a rest or even have meals at the end of the day??
