SuperBowl ads

By David Knox on February 6, 2010 / Filed Under Programming 23

A number of readers have been asking about seeing American ads during the SuperBowl on Monday morning.

The game airs live on TEN / ONE, FOX Sports 3, FOX Sports HD and ESPN.

Networks have advised TV Tonight that unfortunately there are licensing issues in showing full ads, but TEN will be airing “best of” segments from SuperBowl ads throughout the telecast.

The game airs live on ONE at 10am AEDT around the country. It is repeated at 6:10pm AEDT.

On TEN it airs at 10am local time in all cities (meaning a delay in Brissy, Adelaide and Perth).

FOX Sports, which airs live from 10am AEDT is unable to air any of the ads. ESPN is also not expecting to air any ads, though there is a remote chance it may be able to include some later in SportsCenter. ESPN also screens live from 10am AEDT.

Having it on the Ten’s main channel is perhaps recognition that not all people have digital but this is at odds of not showing the IPL and crickets Champions League (even the final) on the main channel. Perhaps the Superbowl is too big not to have it on the main channel.

An American sport for American people. Reports last week showed it second to the Champions League in the most watched sporting events world wide of 2009, but with just 106m watching, but with 98.7m of those being US viewers, it just shows how little interest there is outside the USA in the sport.

I don’t really get why people here expect to see the ads too – they’re showing the Superbowl, not the commercials, and I don’t think anyone would expect to see US ads in any other US import – or say Canadian ads during the Winter Olympics, so why would the Superbowl be any different?

Just wondering why the heck people want to watch an American sport???

I’m pretty sure that the super bowl isn’t under the anti-siphoning laws because it’s not classified as a major sporting event. That’s why I was saying it was ridiculous to air it on their main channel as well as digital.

The Superbowl will be watched by nearly 100 million people in households alone, so that doesn’t include bars, restaurants and back alleyways… you don’t think CBS will advertise their own shows? Or the show proceeding it – Undercover Boss? We will see some ad for CSI and we will go … Wait WTF is Channel 10 advertising Channel 9 shows?! WTF does 9/8c mean…? It is a pity though you’d think at $3m for 30 seconds, CBS would let Australian’s see the American creativity when it comes to advertising…

I agree with Paull 110% that there is no need to show it on 3 channels but once the rules change hopefully it would be restricted to just 1 in the future. I think onehd has a place it just needed to start in 2013 when they had the rights to more high profile sports plus not having to show on the main channel and rodeo for example could also start then we manage with out it this long why not for another 3 years. instead of taking up so much space now by airing a lot of content on all three channel 10 staions could of given fans of shows they treat like crap a go like 7, ABC and to a lesser extent 9 do.

@ johnsen and Daniel G: the NFL may be bigger in America than the afl is in Australia, but the NFL is not that popular in australia, it’s not a national sport,
we have no teams representing the super bowl and you’d be hard pressed to find an NFL football club to join.

Ultimately though, I’m interested in seeing the audience share ten gets, I’m will to be proved wrong.

Rick: Don’t give Nine ideas. They may have for all we know, a 20-1 in the works with Superbowl ads.

Jed, as indicated, SuperBowl is live on FTA around the country on ONE.

  11. Daniel G February 6, 2010 at 12:03 pm -

@Paull: the Super Bowl on Ten is probably for the benefit of analogue viewers. (Maybe next year it can be run exclusively on One as an incentive to switch to digital?) Anyway, during the game, One SD will most likely carry that loop usually used for AFL games that says ‘the currently-scheduled programme is on One HD and Ten (SD)’.

And don’t worry if you can’t view the ads on-air. They’ll definitely be available to watch online, whether legally (youtube.com/adblitz, spike.com/superbowl) or illegally (can’t go into detail due to Comments Policy).

@Paull: I think it’s a good decision to show the Superbowl on Ten’s main channel. The event is several times bigger than the AFL Grand Final and had been shown on the main channels of ABC and SBS for the past decade.

Paull I’m so sorry your terrible daytime TV will be interrupted for one day.

ETA – is it ironic the SuperBowl is the one even more people want to watch for the ads then the game

RE Bre Saxs: It’s the Indianapolis Colts versus the New Orleans Saints. The matchup was determined a fortnight ago.

  16. Jed February 6, 2010 at 11:07 am -

@Bre Saxs. It’s Indianapolis Colts v New Orleans Saints. I’ll be cheering for the Saints.

Sucks it’s delayed in Adelaide. I thought the whole point of a dedicated sports channel was to show live sport.

  17. Craig February 6, 2010 at 11:06 am -

No shock that they can’t/won’t show the ads, the best of special will be good.

  18. Paull February 6, 2010 at 10:49 am -

Still can’t believe that despite having a two dedicated sports channels (One Hd and One HD rebroadcast in SD for those without hi def tuners) that Ten has decided to put this American sporting event on their main channel aswell.

  19. Rick February 6, 2010 at 9:27 am -

In other words: We’re not listening to our audience. We’re a sports show. We’re showing a sporting event.

After all, imagine if you’re one of the advertisers and the work experience kid at One phones you up … “Mind if we play your advertisement in Australia without charging you for it? OK? Yup, free. Yes I’m serious. I’ll fax the release form. Thankyou”.

Instead it’s One and they’re focused on showing the sporting event they’ve purchased the rights to. They seem to think that dealing with anything as messy as what the audience is asking for when it isn’t sport belongs on a Channel 9 “Best Superbowl Ads of all time” Saturday night special

Why the hell do you think we tune into the Superbowl!! for the bloody ads!! No Ads.. No watching Superbowl!!

  21. AA February 6, 2010 at 8:53 am -

Could it be due to music clearance issues and maybe the services r products aren’t relevant to our country?

  22. henry February 6, 2010 at 8:38 am -

At least we don’t have to put up with Tebow’s anti-choice ad.

  23. Bre Saxs February 6, 2010 at 8:34 am -

    American adverts would be interesting.
It’s a shame that the game is to be delayed n Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

Do we know who’s playing yet?

By the way Netowkrs is spelt Networks.
