  1. @Beckala the Nine ads made it clear this was the Winter Special, there was no way Nine would show 2 new eps on the same night, plus the Bolivia Special is 75 min without ads, they will need close to 2 hours to air that one without making cuts to it.

  2. @MillerT1 – first if it was on SBS it would be longer, less ads and they probably would have started it 2 weeks ago. TG is a great show why should we put up with a hacked edition at least 8 minutes shorter that if it was still on SBS.

Another point at the end they promoted TG is 2 weeks, so already (because of the Cricket) they have to hold it over a week and they are calling that the series premier, then what was tonight?

I hate that Nine has butchered the show, cutting out more and filling it with twice the ad breaks of SBS and falsely promoting it, even the 4 year old winter games special was cut to pieces including the opening.

I will be getting my TG by other means from now on, guess I’ll be racking up those frequent flyer points in a few months!

  3. Despite this season of Top Gear being beautifully filmed in brilliant HD, the toolbags at Nine have decided to show an SD version instead.

    What a surprise.

  4. All you people are bloody whingers. SBS aired Top Gear as an hour show, Nine should be allowed to do the same. I do love the show but quite frankly, I don’t think could put up with more than an hour of the show per week. Channel Nine is a commercial station and they need advertisements to pay for the shows that they screen.

You guys should just be grateful that it’s back on television. Plus, why would you download the show? You are contributing to piracy and by watching the show illegally, Top Gear is making less money than it should be and could potentially be axed because of this. So by trying to be a loyal viewer and watch the whole thing off the net, you are actually doing more damage. Get over it. Life is unfair.

  5. Ooh Nooo!

Our worst fears are realised. 42 mins of Top Gear out of an hour. And the lack of closing credits, what is that all about?

Tonights programmes ran overtime finished at 9:35. Probably to fit all those ads in.

  6. ETA – interesting to note at the end the mention of the chopper was not in the original UK broadcast, but they also cut the conclusion and isn’t that the point of the road test in the first place?

  7. Ooh Nooooo!

Our worst fears have been realised S14E1 42mins of Top Gear (out of 1 hour) and no closing credits. What’s the lack of closing credits all about?

Already longing for the SBS days of a vastly superior presentation of a great programme with a detailed preview of the next Top Gear programme after the closing credits. And tonights TG ran slightly behind time ending at 9:35.

  8. I have to say that channel nine, that was absolutely disgusting, the broadcast kept cutting out in queensland, there is alot more edited then sbs would of im pretty sure of that. Overall im very dissapointed, glad i watched it ages ago. 🙁

  9. @Bazza – thanks for the update, 42 minutes is about 8 minutes less than most of the ones that aired on SBS, it will be interesting when BBC Knowledge airs it to see how much the BBC actually gave Nine to air.

David is there any one at Nine you can talk to to find out the facts on the cuts made, did Nine get an edited version from the BBC and cut it further?

I’d also love to hear the viewer comments from the TG ‘hoons’ on that mountain road, I bet the road was closed…

Plus a note on when they switched to the winter ep (apart from cutting the end credits completely) I noticed they cut most of the opening by Clarkson, with no reference to the previous Olympics 4 years ago. Any TG fans would know this since it aired on SBS only a few months back.

  10. Well CH9 just broadcast S14E01 … I recorded it just out if interest to see how much would be cut.

As broadcast on BBC …. 1:01:10. On CH9 … 00:42:08 (no ending credits).

So approx. 17 mins slashed to show ads. Thanks CH9 …. *Not*.

Even if CH9 (or 7 or 10) were to broadcast TG before the BBC did, I wouldn’t even bother.

Such slashing should be Banned. ALL TV networks should be forced to broadcast the show in Full, as broadcast by the originating TV network.

  11. Watching TG and they cut a small bit out before the first ad break about James being lost again and then some more in the tunnels, of course the news was cut, pity it’s often the funnest part!

Still watching here to see what else got the cut and later see just how much of the original 60mins was left in…

  12. Whether it be worried, dread, chopped those ad breaks has to be timely ones and I very much agree with Nathan ( with the same sentiments).

On average the commercial channels like Nine have ad breaks every 7 – 10 minutes with between 3 – 5 minutes worth of ads when previously on SBS it was a break halfway through and BBC Knowledge recently does the same.

  13. @Andrew, its not the ratings the Top Gear viewers/fans have to worried it’s the fact whether, it’ll be chopped up badly to allow commercials to be shown. You’ll hear the theme song and Clarkson telling us what’s on the show then an ad break for 5 minutes then Top Gear for another 10 minutes then when May says something or a joke about Hammond’s height another 5 minute ad break.

  14. As a Top Gear viewer I will give this a go. To be fair having Top Gear on a commercial channel like Nine fills Top Gear fans with dread and if it doesn’t get the ratings “the miracle that is the Nine network” requires then what?

  15. Editorial comment David ? Top Gear followed by Bored To Death ? (and remarkably, then NCIS). And if that didn’t finish you off, surely MKR and the lamentable QI would.
