C31 Melbourne appeals to viewers

Melbourne’s community station Channel 31 begins a public appeal next week to help raise money for its transition to digital.

Melbourne’s local community television station Channel 31 begins a public appeal next week to help raise money for its transition to digital.

The upgrade project comes at a cost of more than $1.3 million but one-off Federal and State Government grants have not been able to make up the shortfall of $350,000.

C31 General Manager Richard McLelland says the station’s facilities and some internal operations may be put on hold without the funds.

“We are looking to Victorians to dig deep and contribute to their community television station. This station could not exist without the support of the community, and it’s not often that we ask for financial help from our viewers – but we need it now.”

Unlike Sydney’s TVS, which is 75% owned by the University of Western Sydney, C31 is independent and has older equipment from 2004. TVS began with a fully automated digital operations centre in anticipation of going digital. C31 also has two live to air shows requiring different facilities.

The subscriber appeal will operate from March 15 to March 28, led by a two hour Switch on Digital Live Broadcast will be hosted by Vasili from Vasili’s Garden.
