Footy Classified out of the north

By David Knox on March 12, 2010 / Filed Under Programming 25

Some AFL fans in New South Wales and Queensland have been asking about seeing Nine’s Aussie Rules shows on TCN9 and QTQ9.

It isn’t good news.

Nine has indicated there are no plans to screen Footy Classified in those cities.

The panel show with Gary Lyon and Caroline Wilson returns to “southern” AFL viewers in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth at 10:30pm Monday March 22nd.

The show used to air later in Sydney and Brisbane, but Nine will air Rugby League games from the UK at midnight with the Harlequins RL v Huddersfield Giants.

Since the arrival of GO! it is also unable to air the show via 9HD, an issue which also denies The Footy Shows airing to different cities. Now shows for both codes air across the borders later, as they did last night.

If the AFL want promote the game Australia wide they should forget NINE when the new contract comes up.
Nine has shown where its priorities lie…. With Pommy Rugby Crap rather than Australian AFL.
No Footy Classified in the states where they want to make inroads and the AFL Footy Show an late despite 9/Win having 3 channels all available.to put it on live..
The HD is a joke anyway

What about us Rugby League fans stuck in S.A??? What are Channel 9 doing about the lack of Rugby League shown down here? Unless you want to get up in the middle of the night to watch it. Fox is our only option which is too bloody expensive especially when people up in qld get it for free. drives me nuts

That was not a drop kick.
He dropped the ball, then reached forward and kicked it on.

You are footballers – get it right!!

Channel Nine is “still the one” when it comes to programming errors.

    Hey FJ,

When the AFL in Sydney or in Brisbane starts have a look at what crowds they get for their games on average and you will see its just a little more than half a dozen.

After the Broncos they are the next largest attented teams in QLD and NSW.

Maybe you were thinking about the attendances for some of the NRL teams when you were thinking of half a dozen.

It shold not be on 9HD to please half a dozen AFL fans when NRL fans want to watch the NRL Footy Show in HD.
Move back to Victoria if you want to watch it.

I still can’t understand why they can’t show the AFL Footy Show and Footy Classified on 9HD live in Sydney and Brisbane like last year. Why is it not possible since the arrival of GO! Doesn’t make sense and I’m yet to see an explanation. Please can someone explain it?

If they’d shown the Super League games at 2PM Sunday rather than late night then it would keep everyone happy. But I suppose this is something the northern states will get used to if 9 get the AFL rights, seeing sub standard coverage.

I am verry sad that i cant watch footy classfiled this year , I relly enjoy the show , Channel 9 should think about people in NSW and QLD that are AFL fans and air footy classfiled ,

  12. FJ March 12, 2010 at 3:39 pm -

Excellent news. Nobody cares about fumbleball in NSW and Queensland.

thanks for nothing nine….as an AFL fan in NSW ….FOX is a must so at least we can watch on the couch AFL teams and games on the W/E…etc if you only have FTA TV you get a swans game and thats about it…..go the Pies!

Once again the area that is seen as the ‘high growth’ area is forgotten about with telecasting. How is AFL meant to grow in Sydney when no one can bloody see what is happening…And yes that includes watching shows like the AFL footy show and Footy Classified.

that’s a shame they see goofy show, but not the quality footy classified

I hope at leats MMM Melb simulcast footy classifides (like they did last year) so we can listen to it, over the net!!

Channel Nine get with it! the last year and a bit we have had the dream with Footy Classifides and The Footy Show – Live on 9HD, now us AFL fans in QLD & NSW have to wait, stay up late and not even see it!

It’ll be good to have the Super League back on the telly, even if it is late at night.

  18. Chris March 12, 2010 at 10:37 am -

why cant they put it on 9HD david?

  19. KLFH March 12, 2010 at 10:31 am -

Can’t channel nine record ratings from GO!? Put the different Footy shows on GO! in the different cities and gauge the interest.

  20. David Knox March 12, 2010 at 10:19 am -

Thanks guys…. always seems to elude me! Corrected.

  21. Jimbo March 12, 2010 at 10:00 am -

Nine’s actually showing the Rugby League from the UK, not Rugby Union.

And it’s a shame that we in Sydney (and in Qld) can’t see Footy Classified at all, and the AFL Footy Show on time

  22. Andrew B March 12, 2010 at 9:57 am -

Why not play it at 2am instead of infomercials? At least then fans could record it to watch later. AFL is growing in Sydney in particular with the new Western Sydney team arriving in the next year or two.

  23. Rob March 12, 2010 at 9:38 am -

Once Nine regain the NRL rights they’ll throw in FC again.

Good one Gyngell, maybe you should just simply place your DVD library in the hands of programmers and don’t bother anymore.

  24. BM-dog March 12, 2010 at 9:32 am -

David – Harlequins v Huddersfield Giants (and all the other British matches Nine will be showing at late night) are rugby league, not rugby union. They’re from the Super League which is the British equivalent of the NRL.

  25. Dave March 12, 2010 at 8:17 am -

Yay, thanks alot Channel 9. Rugby Union games from the UK and no AFL TV shows in Sydney and Brisbane. Just another reason to avoid this crap network. And to think this network actually wants a piece of the AFL broadcasting pie.
