Nine gets its balls back in Perth & Adelaide

The return of the Nine dotty logo to WIN-operated affiliates in Perth and Adelaide sees uniformity for the channel across the country.

The return of the Nine dotty logo to WIN-operated affiliates in Perth and Adelaide today sees uniformity for the channel across the country.

Aside from having to knock up some new business cards and fixing some signage, the switch will allow STW9 and NWS9 to make the most of promo material for shows from the PBL-owned network, which had been keen to see some consistency for its branding.

TV Tonight understands Bruce Gordon’s recent visit to Australia allowed the deal to be done with Nine …. and the balls have fallen into place.

  1. While I prefer the 9 logo with the dots, I’d prefer if WIN stayed without them. The point of 9’s dots is that there are 9 of them, which is relevant to the name of the network. With WIN there is no relevance at all.

  2. It looks a lot better now! I just checked it out. The glassy effect of the logo looks good, but much less watermarky / grey than before.
The HD logo is much nicer, we had the almost circled HD next to the Nine, which was used in the eastern states before they changed it to say Hi-Def underneath.
The Hi-Def is kinda lame though, no one uses that term anymore when you talk abouty channels in HD.
At least we wont have the blue or green bold logos covering up feeds direct from the eastern states.

  3. Btw, was there any official announcement or acknowledgement? I noticed last night that the station id’s had updated, however assumed it was an oversight… When was the official changeover?

  4. While I preferred the lack of Nines balls, I think it’s probably better to have network uniformity.

On the upside, there’s no more opaque watermarks over the dots when no clean feed is available, on the down side, the new normal watermark is way more opaque than the normal one from before…

  5. oh ok, as an Adelaide boy I was wondering why the ‘new/old’ logo hadn’t been shown, now I know why!

Just as well it’s coming back really, seeing as the old shows are returning such as Hey Hey It’s Saturday and Bert hosting the Logies again – why it feels like the 70s/80s all over again!

Speaking of which, I hope Bert does a small tribute to Don Lane at the Logies – I’m sure he will, it would be a nice touch.

  6. I agree with Kuttsywood! It would be nice if the WIN Regional stations now brought back the dots/balls/discs. C’mon Bruce! I’ll promise to love you again…

But let’s not blame Bruce for all of dotty’s woes in the last couple of years. It was PBL Media’s decision to put their Nine logo into a blue box/cube in 2006, thus, Nine Perth/Adelaide, WIN & NBN all had to do the same (Imparja put their ‘footprint’ logo into a blue ball instead) at great cost to every station because of all their physical assets that had to follow suit (eg; uniforms, microphones, cameras, vehicles, buildings, letter-heads, websites, dishes, etc, etc).

But then in 2008, like some kind of business whim, PBL Media brought back their stupid dots. It wasn’t a problem for NBN because they were recently acquired by PBL, & I guess they held a figurative gun to Imparja’s head & made them go dotty too. But WIN Corp is just as big & mean than PBL Media now, so when they tried to up the affiliation fees paid by WIN to Nine to 40%, one of the ways Bruce bit back was to remain dot-less.

In sum, PBL is just as much to blame than WIN for different logos in Perth & Adelaide because they got too greedy & harmed the relationship. But they should still bring back the dots in regional areas now. 🙂

  7. finally adelaide and perth viewers won’t have to put up with the ball-less logo plastered over pbl’s ball logo on news, aca, today show, sport,……programs.

  8. Finally, We dont have to view a rectangular blue box with the 9 in it across every networked program!! I must say it does look strange after having gotten used to not having them though 🙂
