Quill Awards: winners

Seven News reporter Norm Beaman, whose home was under attack in the Black Saturday bushfires, has won a Quill Award from the Melbourne Press Club.

Seven News Melbourne picked up two awards last night at the Quill Awards, the Melbourne Press Club’s local equivalent of the Walkley Awards.

In the television categories:

The Best TV News Report went to Norm Beaman from Seven News for his report “Fire Crisis.”

Beaman was racing home to his property on Mount Disappointment, north of Melbourne during the Black Saturday bushfires, talking to his wife Annie when the phone cut out. He later spoke to Jennifer Keyte on air, in tears, not knowing if his wife had survived.

Updated: Beaman’s win comes a day after Crikey claims his story of a Victorian sex offender on the loose was filmed this week at a cafe purportedly to be the scene of his escape from supervision-but was the wrong one.

Best Television Camera Work went to Will Pristel from Seven News.

Quentin McDermott, Sarah Curnow, Alec Cullen and Caro Meldrum-Hanna from Four Corners won the best TV Current Affairs or Feature Award for their report Two Days in Hell.
