Returning: The Daily Show with Jon Stewart

By David Knox on March 3, 2010 / Filed Under Programming 33

From next Tuesday, ABC2 begins screening The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

The often outrageous political show will air Tuesday – Fridays from 7:15pm with The Daily Show Global Edition to air on Mondays beginning March 15th. It had previously aired some years ago on SBS.

It will be followed by The Colbert Report at 7:35pm weeknights.

That makes 45 minutes of biting US satire every night for those who are looking for alternatives.

Expect trouble.

Unlike many of the entries here my preference is John Stewart. I do enjoy Colbert but Stewart’s humour is more my cup of tea. As for their irreverence of church, I love it, the mores the better. May the God-squads of the world suck up their hypocrisy & blind ignorance of the ridiculous nature of their delusions…

Jon Stewart & Stephen Colbert are great political satirists. The biased, vindictive mockery of the Catholic Church by Jon Stewart, last week and other religious topics (Jewish, etc.) by Colbert , as well, disrespect the mainstream religious bodies in their positive contributions to society, contributing to a destructive cynicism. Some of the bawdiness of the jokes in prime time are a surprise as this is a main channel for viewing by young people as well.

What awesome news I had been hoping that Stewart would join Colbert Thankyou ABC2 easily the best channel on FTA!

This is awesome, also interesting timing, since Viacom is pulling TDS and TCR from Hulu (american site for legally watching various networks shows online with ads) on march 9, which is a bummer since im in USA till april, but i look forward to iViewing it when i get back.

I presume this means colbert is rating well enough to warrent TDS, which is great news for an american fake news show.

Lets just hope it doesn’t have the same tuesday morning issues as colbert does on iView.

Thank you ABC! Picking up Colbert was good but Stewart is the icing. The only thing that could make my day better would be for the ABC to pick up the Glenn Beck Show as well… ;-)

Oh…. will it be in WS?

  8. Matt J March 4, 2010 at 1:07 am -

I think this is fantastic but not sure if Stewart will beat Colbert in my eyes. Colbert is much better….!

And just to add…… I get Colbert at 4.30pmWST which is 7.30pmEST on my Foxtel Satellite which makes it a heck of a lot better than watching it at 7.30 local time in FTA!

    Yipeeeeee!!

At least some people are using their brains and mice to read what we really want!

    Bazza (5:45pm),

The reason why the time-slot’s 7:15pm is because without ads, Stewart & Colbert only run for twenty minutes each.

Great news! Both SBS1 & TEN only aired the ‘Global Edition’ on weekends after midnight, so prime-time is a big move by ABC2.

No word yet, but it should be good for iView watchers too.

The drought is over. I am now a happy man.

@DougalLongfoot, yes but i think they add a bit extra into the “Global edition”

ahhhh a programming dream come true!

  14. Selma March 3, 2010 at 6:22 pm -

Probably would have been better starting at 8pm, so political junkies could watch the 7:30 report.

  15. Michael March 3, 2010 at 5:53 pm -

Awesome. I love Colbert and also Stewart.

@Reubot yeah it was on 10 for a while last year, I wonder what happened there?

It’s a shame it’s on at such a silly time. It’s going to overlap the primetime shows that kick in at 7:30pm, which means I’m going to miss it, or parts of it, on a regular basis. Why couldn’t they have had it starting at 7:00pm? It’s not like there’s anything else on any channel at that time.

    Awesome….Power to the peebles!

@ Grant – I think that is the reasoning behind these new digital channels and Freeview basically to stop people paying for tv and to give it to them the shows off pay tv for free on these new channels. I think ABC was given a massive increase in funding as well.

Eg 7 Two – Having Essence of Emeril and Martha Stewart off pay now on free (though they are 2 years behind) but food doesn’t date.

GO! showing stuff to make it more like a pay channel, such as new movies , shows like Weeds, Curb etc .

Will be interesting to see what Channel Ten’s 3rd channel looks like .

  19. vinny March 3, 2010 at 4:09 pm -

Free TV is getting so much better, I think with more channels coming this year and next I will not want Foxtel ever !

ABC 2 seems to show a lot of stuff off pay tv, so now I don’t even need to get Pay tv as it is on free to air just as quick !

Wow! Thanks ABC2 you are fantastic!!!

Right then, time to ring austar and cancel my subscription

  22. Grinspoon March 3, 2010 at 12:43 pm -

    Nice!

While this is probably the most watched couple of shows on my foxtel over the last how ever many years, i have been finding myself more and more watching colbert at least on abc2 now because it’s a better quality image and in widescreen. I’m sure i’ll continue that with daily show and will only watch on foxtel when the recordings clash with the abc2 ones.

Foxtel needs to lift it’s game on image quality and widescreen conversions of channels.

yes its the best of :)

sweet dont have to get the comedy channel on my new connection now :)

  24. DougalLongfoot March 3, 2010 at 11:32 am -

Not been a regular watcher (don’t have comedy channel) , but enjoyed bits and pieces I’ve seen on the web. Is the “Global edition” a “best of” the week’s episodes?

  25. snowflake March 3, 2010 at 10:16 am -

    Great news!

  26. Rod March 3, 2010 at 9:54 am -

    Magnificent.

  27. Daniel H March 3, 2010 at 9:31 am -

Good to see FTA giving this show a chance. I’ve been watching both these shows every day for years on the comedy channel and if abc2 has it in widescreen and they improve their picture quality then i may watch it instead of the comedy channel.

By the way, how old is that photo? The set hasn’t looked like that in years.

  28. Bogues March 3, 2010 at 7:59 am -

This has made my day, month and probably year. Thank you very much ABC2.

  29. Lazer March 3, 2010 at 7:08 am -

Wowww ABC2 Rulesss seems like I’ll be getting rid of Foxtel soon with all these new channels and shows on FTA now :)

  30. lars March 3, 2010 at 7:01 am -

Nice. ABC2 is getting a little bit more awesome every week.

Gavin and Stacey, Peep Show and now the Daily Show.

    It’s officially my favourite channel.

  31. David S. March 3, 2010 at 6:19 am -

Oh joy, oh rapture, oh happy days! Watching this show on the net was the only way I survived the long dark global nightmare that was the Bush years. SBS never gave it a chance, hopefully ABC2 will do better. The Daily Show and the Colbert Report, together as nature intended.

  32. Reubot March 3, 2010 at 5:37 am -

Also didn’t it air on Ten for a while as well?

  33. Reubot March 3, 2010 at 5:36 am -

The ABC website has it on the tv guide from the 9th.
