Seven cooks up a ratings storm

By David Knox on March 28, 2010 / Filed Under News 17

Seven cooked up another weekly win in Total People this week led by the grand final of its latest reality contest, and threw down the gauntlet with new sports entertainment contenders. Seven has strategically coded its new AFL / NRL shows as a single programme as ‘Seven’s Footy Show’ to combine figures for both shows and net 1.15m viewers, just as Nine does. In terms of figures The Matty Johns Show was the more successful while critically The Bounce probably had the edge.

In Week 13 the Seven Network won with a 31.0% share over Nine’s 29.0% and TEN’s 20.7%. The ABC had 15.8% and SBS 5.4%.

In digital channels GO! was 3.6%, 7TWO 3.2%, ONE 1.7%m ABC2 1.3%, ABC3 0.5% and SBS TWO 0.4%.

Seven won allĀ  nights except Thursday and all five cities with the exception of Sydney, which fell to Nine thanks to NRL. The ABC topped TEN on Friday and Saturday.

But Nine won all three of the key demo groups 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54.

#1 show of the week was My Kitchen Rules‘ grand final on 1.53m viewers, despite figures in Perth being affected by a severe storm.

Queenslanders Veronica and Shadi took home $100,000 for their efforts, even though Hot Seat quietly gave away $250,000 on the same night. Those who claimed Seven’s show was inspired by TEN’s MasterChef Australia saw similaries right down to the closing shots. In reality it was a show more reminiscent of Come Dine with Me which airs on both LifeStyle and Seven, with its My Restaurant Rules state twist.

A question, are viewers who watched both The Bounce and The Matty Johns Show counted twice? It seems to give 7 an unfair edge if they are.

Yuck, reality shows topping the week and they weren’t even good!

combining shows is normal. the footy show does it as well as all the news bullteins.

the bounce will plummit in the ratings this week. matty johns show will stay steady

neighbors has to be canned. it’s dead and a useless show that the story writers are simply lost for ieas

Thanks aznfratboy, I’ll pitch that idea at our development meeting this week!

It will he interesting to see sevens footy show ratings next week. I watched matty’s show this week but won’t be watching it again.

@ Mike. The NRL and AFL Footy Show’s are combined every week. It’s nothing new, and hardly a farce or fail. Neither The Bounce or Matty Johns flopped, infact both were quite strong in their primetime markets, particularly Matty in Brisbane and Sydney.

Impressive results for NCIS and Bones. Both excellent dramas.

It’s a sad week for TV, 2 scripted shows in the top 10, 5 in the top 20. The days of quality TV are gone, and all we have to look forward to is “behind the scenes” of every crappy whichway job losers hold these days….

I got a good idea! Let’s get Border Security and shove it in a classroom! We’ll call it Classroom Security Patrol!

It would be nice if ten did what seven does for afl in Sydney, and not show the Matches live, rather repeat them at a later time, I don’t want to watch afl on a saturday night, I’d much prefer a movie.

  10. Paull March 28, 2010 at 4:59 pm -

Ten should put neighbours at 6pm and move the 7pm project to 630pm. That way they can directly compete with aca and today tonight and be the first high quality show at 630 pm in a long time

i agree. Having both afl and nrl show’s on seperate night’s (for this week), then combining them, is just plain silly for Seven

And i agree about Ten’s early shows. Ten needs to fix it up. Less than 500k for The Simpsons; 514,000 for Neighbours and 648,000 for 7pm aren’t helping Ten at all

Mike do you have any idea how these footy shows work because your post suggests you don’t. The Matty Johns show was the number one show in sydney on thursday night… hardly a fail. it is shown after midnight in melb, ade and perth. the bounce is shown primetime only in mel, ade and perth. the totals for each of the primetime shows are added together – as nine does with its different footy shows. should be much easier for you to grasp next week when they are both on the same night perhaps… dear me.

  13. DAN March 28, 2010 at 3:47 pm -

the reason why ten keeps neigh boring is because of the poms if it wasnt for them then it would have been canned long ago

  14. Mike March 28, 2010 at 3:22 pm -

What a farce. Combing both Seven footy shows together when seperately they flopped big time. Hell they couldn’t even manage to help Seven win their nightly share. Fail.

Is Ten actually doing to do anything with their terrible schedule or just hope Masterchef comes to the rescue and fixes all of their ailing shows?

  15. Alex T March 28, 2010 at 1:03 pm -

only one show for TEN in the top 25.. not the strongest week for them

  16. wamdue March 28, 2010 at 11:19 am -

was expecting to see a bigger increase for The Bill.

Neighbours near the bottom again, I know Thursday had some issues, but how much longer can TEN let this go on.

Yes I am aware that TEN is more legally obliged to air Neighbours in primetime, but seriously how long can they just sit back & take that?

  17. Travis March 28, 2010 at 11:05 am -

    I think Nine won Thursday.
