Tsunami halts 2010 Quiksilver Pro

The tsunami warning for East Coast beaches yesterday resulted in the suspension of Fuel TV's Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast.

The tsunami warning for East Coast beaches yesterday resulted in the suspension of the Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast being screened by action sports channel Fuel TV.

Contest Director Rod Brooks said they had been expecting anything up to a three metre wave to come crashing onto the site.

“If that occurs on low tide it won’t be so bad but if it occurs earlier on the higher tide it’ll wash right through,” he said.

“We’re battening down the entire site, we’re not taking any chances, we’re just closing it up and asking everybody to leave.”

Despite the warning surfers at Snapper Rocks and along the southern end of the Gold Coast ignored the warnings.

The event is expected to continue at 8:00am AEST today.

Fuel TV is airing a 90-minute highlights show at 7pm AEDST after each day of competition until March 10th.

It has also secured the rights to broadcast the season’s second event, the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach from Tuesday 30 March until April 10th.
