Sydney community broadcaster TVS will begin showing News bulletins from Al Jazeera English from today.

Sydney community broadcaster TVS will begin showing News bulletins from Al Jazeera English from today.

Airing from Doha, Qatar, the bulletins will air at 10pm weekdays.

The Arabic-based network includes both Australian and ex-BBC journalists, including Hamish MacDonald who started his TV career in WIN TV’s Canberra newsroom after graduating from Charles Sturt University. In 2008 he was named Young Journalist of the Year by the British Royal Television Society.

Al Jazeera English also screens Frost Over the World, hosted by legendary British presenter Sir David Frost.

Laurie Patton, who signed the channel before announcing his departure as CEO, said, “As a former journalist, I’ve always recognised the value of multiple viewpoints.”

Al Jazeera English
is already available to regional viewers via Austar.

  1. It might surprise you to know, Foxtel actually broadcast Al-Jazeera on its Satellite and Cable services, they just do not add it to the channel lineup.

On Cable (If you have Cable decoding equipment) scan 690Mhz, Al-Zajeera is there, unencrypted (I think).

  2. @Tess1988, theirs a great website called livestation which streams, aj, bbc world and many other news channel for free, you can also pay a small fee for better picture quality.

  3. AJI is the world’s best, most impartial news channel. It’s broadcast from Kuala Lumpur, Washington, and Doha, depending on the time of day. Want to see it FTA? Go to NZ or Fiji (LOL).
    @darthfyer – it’s Wollongong!! (Not Woolongong)

  4. @stan, it ws added to austar late last year, around september when both foxtel and austar started to add more channels, the only one that didn’t get added to foxtel that austar had was al jazeera

  5. not sure if aje will be added to fetch tv which is a new iptv service launching in the next month or so via internet provide iinet and by other internet provides in the future for under $30 peeked month, I really hope they add aje and some other ones like cnn, cnbc, rt, Bbc world, and some other ones as well so look out for fetch tv, also its good to see tvs doing that and its good to see it In primetime, now I just wished channel 31 would do it in melbourne

  6. Wow! That’s great news for the Sydney market!

When did Al Jazeera get added to Austar? I was watching a repeat screening of ‘Journos’ on SBS1 last week & it was the one featuring Al Jazeera English’s Hamish MacDonald when he was covering the last US election. At that time, MacDonald said it was disappointing Al Jazeera wasn’t seen in the US & Australia at all, so things might’ve changed since then unless he forgot about Austar?

Writing of SBS; I thought *they* were gearing up for Al Jazeera English content because they have a few of their documentaries uploaded on the ‘full episode’ section of their website. Al Jazeera would work well as SBS1’s overnight feed!

  7. @mac One of the reasons TVS has ‘better quality’ programs is due to the fact that more of them are movies/old repeats/sourced from overseas via satellite networks like DWTV and Al Jazeera than in Melbourne where the *local* volunteer producer base is larger.

  8. If only TVS were able to extend their broadcast area now that they are digital. Even if it no further north than Newcastle and no further south than Woolongong. There really are some good programs on TVS and it’s a shame the extended coverage area isn’t able to watch it.

  9. @greenspoon, i agree, i would be more than happy if a real news channel like al jazeeria replaced foxnews. most the time if im flicking through the news channels i just skip foxnews because it just so ridiculous.

  10. looking at the tvs website, it looks like they have some descent programming, unlike that joke that is channel 31 Melbourne. also is there a reason why tvs broadcasts in digital while the rest of the community channels in other cities ares till waiting for digital spectrum?

  11. News Corp, Foxtel and Kim Williams don’t want Al Jazeera English on their platform for political reasons. They are flat out against providing a different view of world affairs and along with their spat about the BBC it shows what they are all about.

I’ve seen Al Jazeera English on Austar and it would be a worthy addition. It must be at least 10 years a news channel has been added.

Looking forward to the ABC news channel.

  12. I’ve seen the English Al Jazeera many times when travelling over seas and it’s definitely one of the best news networks i’ve ever seen. Foxtel really needs to lift their game and add it.

Although I bet it’s unlikely as they’ve already shifted BBC out of the news block as part of Newscorps war against the BBC. And of course own the basically now unwatchable fox news propaganda network. Where it just blows my mind how they out and out just lie and promote fear and hatred. How on earth do they get away with it?

Al Jazeera, don’t be fooled by what you’ve heard or think you know, from what I have seen it’s very objective and very intelligent. More so than the likes of the BBC. I don’t know what the arabic version is like, but the english one is excellent.
