It’s still a jungle out there

News is now leaking out about a fourth and fifth Underbelly series for Nine.

After its extraordinary figures on Sunday night, it’s no surprise that news is now leaking out about a fourth and fifth Underbelly series for Nine.

The show cemented itself as a franchise with the second series. Now a fourth is said to based on the work of Strike Force Tuno, which investigated 12 alleged violent crimes in Sydney, seven alleged murders, three suspected murders and two attempted killings.

Events could date back to 2001 or even earlier.

Nine was ecstatic with the numbers for Sunday night.

“It was a great result for Underbelly, we are very happy and appreciative of everyone who was involved in the series,” Nine Network boss David Gyngell said.

Previous reports on a fourth series had speculated that Queensland in the 1980s would be the focus of the next series, but it is now believed to be under consideration for series 5.

As to the next season, Producer Greg Haddrick recently told TV Tonight, “We’ll be thinking about it when we finish the third series.”

  1. I’m thinking Underbelly will have around 9 seasons before audiences start getting sick of it

If McLeod’s fetuses can last that long, this thing probably can as well

  2. As much as we are bad mouthing the prospect of UB37 ( :S ), I’m pretty sure Nine are going to persist with this as long as its successful.

And that may be for a very long time…

  3. I’m still waiting for 9 to be able to properly show the first series in Melbourne (I’m not interested in obtaining it illegally, or watching edited/pixellated versions).

  4. Queensland makes more sense for Series 4. By staying in Sydney for a 3rd (effectively) season, the franchise runs the risk of becoming extremely stale unless they get some major casting coups.

  5. When would there be a clearer indication of the ‘Ongoing’ overseas success of Underbelly. I recall the first series went well, how about the second?

Surely there would be a slight anxiety, given market unpredicatability, that Underbelly might not market as well as an ongoing franchise.

  6. Here’s a crazy idea 9. How about investing the rewards of UB into new drama, rather than flogging this one till it’s a dreary as a rerun of Hey Hey…oh wait…
