Knives out for MasterChef contestants

Both A Current Affair and Today Tonight have revealed the past on MasterChef contestants, with claims one has a criminal record.

The honeymoon for MasterChef Australia‘s second season would appear to be over already with both A Current Affair and Today Tonight questioning the past on contestants.

ACA reporter Tom Steinfort claimed that Justin Moran, 35, from Victoria has “a criminal record and a dubious business history.” The show even subtitled the story as ‘Breaking News’ and ‘Masterchef Bombshell.’

Steinfort reported that Moran claimed “he previously disclosed to the producers of MasterChef his past and they chose despite that that he would be a contestant on the show because they considered him reformed.”

The ACA reporter said Moran confirmed most of the allegations but that as far as he was concerned it was all in the past.

One of the Top 50 contestants in the reality series, Moran is depicted as ‘self-employed.’

A TEN Spokesperson told TV Tonight, “As with all of our reality-based programs we perform Police checks on participating contestants.  The search provided by Police on Justin Moran showed no disclosable court outcomes or outstanding matters.”

Earlier this year The Biggest Loser had to replace two of its contestants after one faced Police charges.

MasterChef has so far proven to be a ratings winner for TEN, threatening the ratings run enjoyed so far this year by Nine and Seven.

This week Matt Preston told TV Tonight he wasn’t sure if the show would enjoy the dream run it had in media in 2009.

“It’s very interesting,” he said,”whether there will be a shift, how will there be a shift, the tall poppy, all those things.”

Moran was voted out of MasterChef Australia tonight.

  1. I just hope when it knocks the 7&9 shows out of the water for the 3rd night in a row that it also knocks the smiles of there faces!

That said you know TT is not going to leave it there, but will anyone care?

  2. Didn’t TT do the same sort of thing when Nine got TopGear, they did a whole segment about hoons.

  3. Nearly is defamation on the behalf of Today Tonight and ACA. They should be more careful what they report before the show the story on air. As Derryn Hinch would have said when he was on TV “Shame, Shame Shame….”.

  4. This type of journalism is truly offensive. How dare they defame a man on national television. He is purely on the show to cook and display his culinary expertise. His previous mistakes should not be made a matter of contention, let alone subject of national scrutiny! Shame on you ACA and Today Tonight!

  5. Free publicity for MasterChef on other networks. I suppose TEN would be flattered, especially since they don’t see The 7PM Project promoting Top Gear or Australia’s Got Talent.

  6. have some of thes current affairs show reporters had any criminal activity in the past

well today tonight always to stick the knife into other tv station shows. i got not doubt the 7 executives always give a helping hand with the production of every tv show story on another australian fta. maybe it’s about time they start looking at their own rubbish shows like agnt, suday night and so on and so forth

  7. Do they actually believe that their disingenuous exposé is going to have a negative impact on MasterChef. Unless the contestant did something really deplorable, it just makes me want to support them because they have turned their life around to the point where they are having a go on one of the biggest shows on television.

  8. All you people are here defending him when you don’t know what type of person he is..

  9. 9 said they couldn’t disclose some of his crimes and didn’t they also say he still had to go court?
Didn’t sound like it was all in the past.
Doesn’t worry me either way as I’m not into boring cooking shows. Thank christ for pay TV.

  10. I couldn’t figure out what it was they were accusing him of. It seemed to me that he had had a minor speedbump in the road of life, now behind him, yet they were trying to suggest he was some top level criminal.

Justin handled himself well, and can hold his head up for that, at least.

This is why I dislike tabloid journalism.

  11. Its losers not loosers. But seriously these current affair shows need to get a life. Silly as well because 7:30 could have been anyone’s tonight and these two shows have promoted MC and now viewers will tune in to see who this contestant is. Silly, silly.

  12. At least Channel 9 and 7 have a common ground. They really are desperate to dent Masterchef’s success and calling it ‘breaking news’ just shows what trash show ACA is, I doubt most people even know this person called ‘Justin Moran’.

  13. Absolute nonsense. All that happened in our house was that whenever Justin appeared on screen we reacted with mock outrage… but still managed to not switch over to Channel 9 or 7. Controversy fail.

  14. Free promotion for MC from both nine and seven…..channel ten must be wrapped. Should with ratings battle tonight.

  15. lol, 7 and 9 try soo hard to grab masterchef viewers attention, but really anyone knows just to ignore them. what total loosers they are, i mean who really cares anyway.
