MasterChef cooks the ratings

Masterchef pulls TEN back into the ratings race with its strongest week this year, impacting on Seven and allowing Nine to win Week 17.

In Week 17 MasterChef Australia pulled Channel TEN back into the ratings race.

The return of TEN’s cooking show was #1 for four of its five nights hitting a high of nearly 1.7m viewers and destroying the competition in the 7:30 timeslot. If this keeps up for three months, or goes higher, it will be an unprecedented game-changer to the ratings game.

MasterChef hit the Seven Network especially hard, and has already notched up one casualty in the form of The Bounce. Seven’s weeknight factuals are also vulnerable to TEN’s reality. That just allowed Nine to keep a grip on the week.

The Nine Network won with 27.8% to Seven’s 27.1% and TEN’s 24.7%. The ABC had 15.5% and SBS 4.9%.

In multichannels GO! was 3.3%, 7TWO 2.9%, ABC2 1.3%, ONE 1.3%, SBS TWO 0.5% and ABC3 0.4%.

Nine was first in 18-49 and 25-54 demos but TEN revived its 16-39 demo.

Nine won Sunday, Monday and Thursday, with Seven taking Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Nine took the week in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Seven won Adelaide and Perth.

The ABC beat TEN on Saturday while TEN beat Seven on two nights and Nine on one. Week 17 was TEN’s strongest week this year.

#1 show of the week was Underbelly with 1.91m viewers.

  1. I too find it confusing (and odd) that the shares reported here are the networks combined shares rather than individual networks shares.

I think each network should be broken out individually. Combining Nine and Go! together is making less and less sense every day as digital ratings grow.

To at least address what a lot of people seem to be pointing out here (confusion) could you not at least point out that the shares include multi-channels. IE:

    “Nine/Go! won with 27.8% to Seven/7TWO’s 27.1% and TEN/One’s 24.7%. The ABC1/ABC2/ABC3 had 15.5% and SBS One/Two 4.9%”

Tiny change would make a world of difference.

  2. The problem ten has is they rely on high ratings from one or two shows- sure it works in the short term but it’s not sustainable in the long term. Ten will feel the need to add bigger and better challenges and eventually they’ll get to a point where they’ve exhausted all avenues for making mc better

  3. wow we having a bit of a fight here are we david ha well it makes your bolg even more better tv news and daily dose of fights ha dont know why u bother with people lik that

  4. Watched MasterChef for the first time ever on Friday night, and i was underwhelmed. I would starve if I ate those small servings they prepare. The preparation of the dishes wasn’t properly explained and I found the whole show rather humourless and dull.

Much prefer Ready Steady and Huey. Huey is never dull, and his meal sizes are always huge!

  5. Janey, maybe you *should* start your own blog full of 18-49 lists, separate channel ratings and all the praise of Channel Ten that you’d like. It’s bad enough that you run MediaSpy through the Ten Spin-Wssh each day, but worse that you’re here criticising David for choosing to *gasp* report the figures in the industry standard format.

David, I for one look forward to your Sunday wrap-up. It’s the one place that you can get a clear, un-biased view of the week that was. Ignore the rampant network fans, because your work is very much appreciated.

  6. Great week for TEN, and looking at the final numbers it won’t take much for TEN to win the week. That said I think MC will drop sightly next week, but still be the top show for TEN and taking out at least a few nights along the way.

  7. @rhys: Totally agree about the masterclass, i remember last season when people realised u learn how to cook more on fridays than any other day the ratings went up. Its such a great ep seeing the hosts cook food to perfection

  8. MasterChef is close to bullet proof at this stage. I’m wondering if their regular Friday night Master Class shows will prove a chink in the armour. I noticed Friday rated lowest by a considerable margin, and I have to admit the Master Class is the one MC show each week I don’t mind missing.

  9. I have asked before, and wasn’t answered then either. Still don’t know why you only post the combined network shares in your weekly reports and list digital channels separately only. You say you post industry standard, but seeing as Oztam release separated figures…wouldn’t that be the industry standard? Pretty sure Seven release separated figures as well, and it is only Nine that combine the figures. What will happen when ABC have a fourth channel and Ten have a third? Will you still be combining all the channels into one network figure?
I was just asking…but if you’d rather snap back at me instead of answering the question, that is your choice.
Also, I remember you asking for the top shows in 18-49 and you would post them each day…do you receive them?

    1. Yes I would combine the figures for ABC4 with ABC Network figures as I already do for ABC3. That’s the industry standard as we all realise and hence the use of the word Network in the story.

As I said those digital channels are then broken out as a result of requests….that’s the history to how we got to this point (and for the record TEN sends me nothing on Sundays). I wouldn’t even contemplate a list of Top 10 18-49s until I got the same for all demos. After that I would need to look at the form in which it is delivered. Frankly I could spend all morning trying to assemble numerous data from various sources and never get anything else done, so there are no plans here to list Top 10 18-49s.

  10. David, I did not mention Ten at all in my post…so don’t know why you would feel the need to defend your positive story about Ten. Of course I, and everyone else who reads your blog, appreciate your hard work every day (including Sunday) but after seeing the percentages for the main channels for the week in demos 6pm-10.30pm, I was curious as to what figures you were quoting. No barb intended at all.
I also thought it was a fair question as to why you only advise the network combined figures and then the digitals separately, without the main channels as a separate percentage…seeing as they are the most important figure IMO. Oztam has separated the figures since January this year, and you mostly do it in the daily reports, so why not the weekly ones? Once again…just asking…no offence intended at all.
Answering your question, I have no interest in starting a blog.

  11. Seven would have won the week if not for its capitulation on Thursday and average performance on Friday (the lacklustre AFL game between the Bulldogs and the Crows did not help).

  12. Masterchef is the gift that keeps on giving for 10, unbelievable figures for launch week, haven’t seen anything like it, perhaps ever???

I predict the finale will do even better than last year and hit 4 mill or more.

7pm Project will start winning its slot in the next month or so.

  13. MC may have had an impact on 7 but it also took many viewers from Underbelly,TG,Sea Patrol and Hey Hey. I would say with 9s younger demos it took a much bigger hit yet still won the week.

    1. Janey I thought I gave TEN a pretty good rap. It even got the story lead over Nine who actually won the week. Barbs like this one make me wonder why I bother working on Sundays.

Demos are network as per the previous sentence. 6 – midnight as per industry standard. Multichannels had been added in after people had requested I break them out. Have you thought about starting your own blog yet?

  14. David, when you say that Nine were first in 18-49 and 25-54, are you talking about the combined Nine/Go! figures from 6pm-midnight? Or just Channel 9? Or are the figures from 6pm-10.30pm? Some clarification would be appreciated.
And why don’t you give the main channel figures separately for the week? You show the digital channels separately, but not the main channels, which I would think are more important.

    1. Call me crazy Janey but I’ve yet to see you say something critical of TEN? All through this blog you have been quick to trumpet / clarify TEN results. Viewers have network faves, that’s fine, so given this you’ll forgive me if I took this as a barb when I actually wrote it positively. I’ve used the same formula / data all year and only now you’re asking, when TEN has a better week?

I repeat, TEN had its best week all year.

  15. Channel Ten basically only has Masterchef, AFL and TAYG that perform quite well.
I think if SYTYCD is renewed for another season, it should go back to Sundays/Mondays since Wed/Thurs definitely wasn’t working. Maybe put TAYG back on Tuesdays.
Not sure how Junior MC will fare considering Celeb MC didn’t do that well in the ratings. The Commonwealth Games would probably get decent enough ratings for Ten not to slump back to a distant third.

  16. Well looking at those figures, i think its safe to say that having the 7pm project at 7pm and Masterchef at 7.30pm has not hurt Masterchefs ratings.

  17. Even with the huge MasterChef Ten only manage to come third. Just shows how weak the rest of their programming is. But there’s no doubt they are finally back in the ratings battle. This year is is looking like it’s going to be an interesting one.
