MTV promising another new channel

Hot on the heels of their MTV Classic launch, MTV Networks Australia have confirmed another MTV-branded channel is on the way.

Hot on the heels of their new MTV Classic channel which launches tomorrow at 5pm, MTV Networks Australia have confirmed that another MTV-branded channel is on the way later in 2010.

“We plan to launch another channel later this year so stay tuned. 2010 is certainly a big year for us!” Rebecca Batties, General Manager for Music Brands, MTV Networks Australia & New Zealand, told The Music Network.

However, she remained tight-lipped on exactly what form the new channel will take and what it will offer musically.

There are rumours the channel may be The Music Factory, TMF, which already screens on Optus, and can sometimes be a “red” interactive channel on MTV.

MTV Classic launches at 5pm tomorrow, in place of VH1, with MTV Classic: The Launch featuring Slash.

  1. If only ‘rage’ on the ABC had its own fulltime music channel, that would only play a wide range of music clips from its huge library, please ABC?

  2. cant say im happy with the change, MTV classic replays too much crap now, much preffered vh1 where they span music across the decades and add variety, but now its just full of replays. as we are with selectv we cant opt or go to another music channel like [V]

  3. lol, yeah right… an HD music channel?

Are you serious? I promise you, you will not see that anytime soon. There are far more channels that are far more worthy (not to mention ready) to go HD.

While I agree, there is no excuse for any channel to still be 4:3 in 2010, asking for it in HD is a bit rich at this point, seeing as there are only 15 HD channels on the entire platform.

Channels like Sci Fi, History and BBC Knowledge are likely to go HD sooner than these.

Just remember, it’s a MUSIC channel, it’s not about the video, and while they should broadcast the music videos in as good a quality as possible, other channels would be a much higher priority as far as HD is concerned (and they can only fit in 5 HD channels per TP).

  4. Turned over to see the new channel and then turned back almost instantly. Why? They were showing that god awful show the Osbornes. So much for music.

  5. Whoever posted the 3rd Channel didnt do thier research, There is already a 3rd MTV Channel in Australia ‘The Music Factory’. ..and thats not digital widescreen either!

  6. as long as they pull their finger out of their but and make their channels 19:9 i will be happi for another music channel =). But if they keep up with this 4:3 crap there isnt any point till they make their previous channels a platform for new ones!

  7. Though sticking with VH1 would have been the best option, if MTV Classic do stick to playing mostly clips from the 80s/90s, most of those are in 4:3 anyway and unless they’ve been digitally remastered, HD wouldn’t make much difference to picture quality.

But if they do follow up with a promised third MTV channel, that better be HD 16:9

  8. ..as predicted, MTV Australia has screwed over the viewers by simply changing the name of the Channel and keeping the same sh*tty 4:3 SD Resolution!.

  9. VH1 is one of my favourite channels. MTV has never been much chop, if it plays similar music, specials like VH1, here’s hoping it is not all bad.

  10. For all this hype MTV are doing with the launch of Classic, This better be a Digital Widescreen channel otherwise this is just a dump are old crap over on what VH1 was and screw the people over some more!
