Police spoil Father Ted fan party

Regional police revoked a liquor licence at 'Tedfest,' a convention for fans of UK sitcom Father Ted, being held in Parkes.

Who would have thought fans of Father Ted could be so lively?

A fan event held in Parkes, NSW, over Easter was attended by local police who revoked a liquor licence.

‘Tedfest’ has been held annually in Ireland since 2007, where fans gather to celebrate the Channel 4 sitcom with live music, shows and games. This year the first Australian Tedfest was held in Parkes, chosen for its success with Elvis conventions. Events across the weekend included The Nun’s Picnic, Ted’s Got Talent, Carmogie Jelly Wrestling, Sister Dolly’s Country & Western Show, and Father Mick’s Tribute to Kenny Rogers.

But fans from across Australia who congregated at Parkes Showground found a liquor licence revoked on the first night.

Police responded after they received a large number of noise complaints.

A local paper reports the Lachlan LAC Licensing Police attended a venue and found alleged breaches of licensing laws with regard to intoxication.

The Parkes Show Society locked the buildings within the showgrounds on Saturday, where the event had taken a turn for the worst.

One festival goer from Melbourne said, “We paid $250 for all events all weekend and we’ve travelled 10 hours to all this.

“There has been no trouble or aggression – it’s all been in good humour,” she said.

80 per cent of visitors headed home on Sunday morning with only 30 people remaining.

One organiser said they will not be holding the festival in Parkes again.

Organisers did not respond to enquiries from TV Tonight.

  1. I was at Tedfest. It was a farce. The organisers should be ashamed. $250 for a half dozen signs to provide some Craggy Island atmos? I don’t think so! It was 40 people standing around a barren race track, wondering why they had paid $250 a head and travelled 400+kms to a joke of a festival. Worst organised festival ever! Heads should roll. The booze thing was the smallest of its problems.

  2. Maybe they should all be drinking cups of tea. “Oh, go on Father, have a cup of tea.” How terrific it is that there are still so many Father Ted fans out there. That show is always hilarious, no matter how many times you watch it.
