  1. I also am named Ricardo Goncalves and im a proud Australian-Portuguese.Through school I chose to to be called RIchard so I could be more accepted as an aussie and fit in .Now I am 35 ,Ive realised my name is who I am and Ricardo is who ill be.Better late than never.

  2. I cant believe some of the comments i’m reading on here. The reason he ‘calls himself Ricardo’ is because that’s his name, he didnt wake up one morning and think ‘let me call myself Ricardo – that will get me hired’. Ignorant are those, like his school teachers that told him he would be called Richard – to suit them. He was born with the name ‘Ricardo’. Nobody has the right to change that but him. He is proud of his Portuguese heritage and for that i comend him. I’m a first generation Canadian -Portuguese and would never try to hide my background. Good on you Ricardo!

  3. well, if u think ricardo is an exoctic name, imagine mine… im form Brazil and ricardo is a typical name in south america… btw he is a great presenter and thks sbs to be multicultural as Australia is..:-)

  4. Its about time they had a person who looks that good to read the news, that’s the only reason I’ll be watching the news on SBS because of Ricardo.
By the way, Mr Do-Bee, that’s the guys name and there’s nothing wrong with it. At least he has class, and speaks well, you are just jealous because you probaly dont look and sound as good as him !!!!

  5. He is from Portuguese (Europe) background, where Ricardo Goncalves (Gonçalves) is a very common name. BTW Brazil was a Portuguese colony so that is why most of the brazilians have names of Portuguese background but they are not Brazilian names…

  6. I am a little bemused how people can get online and criticise someone for the name given to them by their parents. He has a Portuguese name because he was named by Portuguese parents, what did you expect? Perhaps you should be more concerned about parents who name their children after fruits, cars and designer labels which in my view is a form of child abuse.

  7. I can’t believe some of the dull (& apparently anglo?) trolls who inhabit these forums complaining about a presenter on a multi-cultural network having an authentic European name. Get away from the television and get a life people!

  8. Well said, Mike.
It would be hard to match the high calibre of commercial tv presenters like Naomi Robson and Matt White.
Now, perhaps one of your friends will sit you down and explain what irony is.

  9. From one Madeiran Gonçalves to another ………..Gooronya mate!

Bacalhau con batatas & carne, vinho e ailos!

    Viva Madeira ….Viva

  10. I think he is a great presenter. His name is a normal name for me. Ricardo is “Richard” in Spanish, Portuguese. In Australia people have quite strange name… Skye, Blue….

  11. Ricardo is very charming and competent presenter! Get over the fact he calls himself Ricardo people! Latin endings for name are in…” Alejandro, Roberto, Fernando! Ricardoooo! Does he have a Brazilian background?

  12. Another reason not to watch SBS, as if we needed another! Whatever this guy calls himself he is just too smug.

Quality Presenters? You mean the presenters that aren’t good enough for commercial free to air or the ABC or who have been sacked/dumped by Pay TV?

I’m still dismayed that SBS only seems to hire presenters who have an ‘exotic’ name.
