Rumour: Beat the Star

By David Knox on April 8, 2010 / Filed Under News 14

TV Tonight hears whispers that yet another game show is in development at Channel Seven.

Beat The Star is a UK show (pictured) based on a German format called Beat the Host. It pits a member of the public against a celebrity opponent, over extreme mental and physical games.

According to ITV’s official website, “While the pride and reputation of the star is at stake, the brave challenger stands to win a massive cash prize if they can ‘beat the star.’”

A celebrity and their challenger compete in seven mystery challenges, described as athletic, brain-boggling or ‘out-of-this-world, with just seconds to prepare for each game.

If the contestant wins they pocket the prize money but if the celebrity wins the money rolls over until the next week.

One former contestant told the Manchester Evening News: “I was unsure about the show before I went on, but now I’ve seen it, I like it. It’s a bit quirky – family viewing that keeps you watching.

“I didn’t do any special training. Because I do triathlons all the time, I train six days a week anyway.

“The programme producer said, `Look, forget it. There’s nothing you can do that’ll prepare you for this. Just keep your own fitness up’. And when you look at the different things they ask you to do – last week’s programme had one round where they had to milk a cow. How can you train for that?”

A Melbourne-based production is planned, while a local version of US gameshow Minute to Win It is to be produced in Sydney.

    LOL, Michael*oz! XD

Yeah, this sounds like just another mediocre reality where the only thing going for it is the alleged ‘celebrities’ who, knowing Seven, will probably comprise of Z-List Seven personalities. Celebrity Circus meets Gladiators possibly? (With a gene pool like that, how can it fail?)

sounds ok, but it will probably fall into the same trap as gladiators. even if it rates well the huge pricetag per episode will not see it get very far.

“Star”, of course, will have to be a rather loose term.

I think it sounds like a good idea,
For a few years now ,I have been saying , we need a game show, similar to the the Friday Night Live, which was on, during Big Brother times.
For one season outside big brother, they had the friday night live games, with celebrities, against the public.
If its anything like Friday Night Live, it should be good,

Seven going overboard with game shows – these two plus Marriage Ref (is that a game show?) Where does Seven intend filming the Marriage Ref?

Eeek. Cheap and nasty game shows seem to be the flavour of the month at Seven.
