Showtime picks up US Shameless series

Showtime has approved the US version of Shameless, starring William H. Macy, to a 12 episode series.

America will indeed get its own version of the Gallagher family after Showtime has decided to approve the US version of Shameless to series.

It has ordered 12 episodes from the pilot which stars William H. Macy and Emmy Rossum.

Now set in Chicago, the American version has been written by John Wells together with UK creator Paul Abbott. Both are producers on the project.

The Hollywood Reporter notes the US version sees the family dealing with the recession. ‘The mother is AWOL, and the alcoholic patriarch (Macy) usually ends up passed out on the living-room floor, so their smart but unpredictable 18-year-old daughter, Fiona (Rossum), is tasked with keeping her five younger brothers and sisters on the straight and narrow.’

Allison Janney has a recurring role.

The series is expected to go into production in the US summer but there’s no word yet on a premiere date.

At least with Paul Abbott on board, plus a character actor in Macy, there is some chance they might get this right…

  1. Macy just doesn’t have the sleaze factor that the actor playing Frank Gallagher has. Seriously, that guy looks the part. He looks like he’s truly lived the role.

And I know they love to do this in the US (Gossip Girl), but I’d struggle to accept Emmy Rossum as 18.

    I fear for this.
