The Melbourne Cup of Oysters

From breaking eggs to opening oysters, Australia is hooked on MasterChef. Its fourth straight night thumped the competition.

Four straight nights….

MasterChef Australia is headed for a clean sweep of the week, having again taken out the #1 placing of the night.

Last night’s episode pulled in 1.58m viewers, thrashing Getaway‘s 996,000 and Seven’s combined football shows on 754,000.

TEN’s reality show even stepped up the content with dramatic cooking tests that eliminated contestants in heart-stopping cook-offs. From breaking eggs, to weighing salmon, to a “Melbourne Cup of Oysters”  race -the show has actually strengthened in format.

In Melbourne MasterChef was unstoppable, pulling in 520,000 viewers. It blew The Bounce out of the water, on a paltry 161,000.

In Sydney, where the NRL bombshell rocked football fans, its 431,000 still beat The Matty Johns Show on 304,000 -nearly double the Peter Helliar hosted show.

Nine’s later Footy Show was strong with 950,000 with 335,000 for Melbourne and 250,000 for Sydney.

Elsewhere yesterday Sea Patrol sailed to 1m viewers, Law and Order: SVU took 942,000, The 7PM Project was 826,000, Kokoda was 788,000, How I Met Your Mother took 628,000 and Cougar Town 626,000.

Nine Network won the night with TEN in second and Seven in third place.

  1. Agreed in that the “reality TV” moniker does not suit MasterChef as it is a cooking competition.
But its one of only two shows that I watch on FTA now, and damn this first week as been good. Even last season, I found it hard to watch every night, but I want to watch every night.

Totally deserving of those ratings. One of the very best of these competition style series around.

  2. I’m actually heading home of an evening intending to be in so as to catch the start of Masterchef. And oddly, the masterclass on Friday was as good to watch as the competition shows. the 3 front men gel well, Matt Moran is now very comfy with his guest spots. I dunno, the show really works (and I hate reality/competition shows normally and Ten in general).

  3. wow i hate masterchef worst show but im very happy that svu got ovee 900,000 nearly half wat to a million cos last night ep was great and the acting by ovlia i hope the numbers stay like this cos i lik svu my fame and only cop crime show go svu

  4. I’m not surprised this show did well… I didn’t expect to follow this series but the format and editing is just eye catching and worth watching, well done MasterChef you deserve all the views

  5. @ tasmanian devil – I think it would be a good topic for David to research 🙂

Maybe even some sort of poll – “What do you class as reality tv?”

  6. @ Goonies – Good comment. Reality TV seems like an extremely broad term and it’s unclear what gets classed as reality TV and what doesn’t. Game shows, factuals, news, magazine shows, even documentaries could possibly be classed as reality TV, after all they aren’t scripted. There needs to be a dividing line between unscripted and reality.

  7. Swore I wouldn’t get sucked in this year, but there I was last night, waiting through another ad break to see how much a piece of fish weighed. They must be doing something right.

  8. I’m surprised that the nrl show wasn’t played in Melbourne last night… If they had actually done that, they probably would have got more viewers than the
    bounce…

  9. I just have a comment regarding the ‘reality tv’ tag – this has come to cover pretty much anything that is not a sitcom or drama.

I totally agree things like Big Brother and Survivor would still be classed reality tv but do we not think Masterchef is just a cooking competition and SYTYCD is just a dance competition? I think it has become too broad a term to throw everything under the same banner. To claim you just don’t watch ‘reality tv’ could mean anything.

Not sure where my point is going really….but I love Masterchef whether it be a contest, reality tv or just good old fashioned light entertainment!!

  10. Oh forgot to add anything with Micallef, Glee and Merlin I also love on 10… didn’t mention them as they’re more recent. Masterchef and Biggest Loser (without Bob and Jillian) is stopping me from liking pretty much all on 10.

  11. 7PM Project with 826k: the glory may be reflected off Masterchef, but with 13 weeks of daily Masterchef to come, it looks like 7PM will be one of Ten’s successes this year.

Cougar Town is awful – and is clearly impacting on HIMYM. It would be interesting to see the Time-Shift for HIMYM, as our house almost never watchEs it live due to the poor lead-in. Last night was the exception as Masterchef ended just as HIMYM started.

PS: The Bounce (161k) in Melbourne… they put down lost dogs after a month, don’t they?

  12. What an episode last night, Masterchef is powering along destroying everything in its path…. amazing series thus far, they really have mastered all elements here, the production, the judges, the contestants…..

Well done 10 on another fantastic year…. I want some more!

Is it worth 10 maybe having a 30min 6pm catch up of MC???

  13. Masterchef also whips the competition in all key demos showing that it truly does appeal to people of all ages. In 18-49 and 16-39 it is way above the figure of the show that is second – Nine’s Footy Shows.

  14. Channel 10’s savior has arrived

Channel 7 and with the AFL rights – you would think after getting the rights back they would be able to create stable footy shows for the fans/viewers. Considering C9 has 3 footy shows and no AFL matches to show on TV whilst C7 has, well, 1 footy show by the looks of things. No effort at all, poor form.

  15. Man, I used to really love 10. It is like I’m in opposite world sometimes. Neighbours, rove, The Panel, Russel Coight, 7pm project, Big Brother, Smallville, Supernatural, SYTYCD, Australian Idol.. really liked them (though they stuffed Big Brother up a bit towards the end).

Masterchef and Biggest Loser (if it is missing Bob and Jillian) are the worst shows 10 has I think, and yet the elusive people with ratings boxes say so many are loving it. I’m sick of reality shows. Feel sad for 7 and 9 as whatever they have on at 7.30 I probably think is much better than Masterchef.

  16. gosh, its looking like Masterchef is going to settle around 1.5m, and it will no doubt increase in the final weeks..if thats the case, its going to be a long, long for months for seven and nine

  17. I mised the first couple of weeks of Masterchef last year, so I don’t know how these elimination rounds compare, but I found last night’s episode to be compelling. I was almost on the edge of my seat.

  18. MasterChef is an unstoppable juggernaut that has captured the public’s imagination and put it in a stranglehold. The other three channels should just resign themselves to the fact that nothing in the 7.30pm for the next three months is going to beat it. It took about eight weeks for MC to rate in the high 1M’s last year, and this year it is getting in the upper reaches of 1M from night one. Incredible success, but it deserves it. The show is well produced, well paced and highly addictive.

I watched the first half hour of Matty Johns last night. I thought they handled the devastating Melbourne Storm scandal well, the Controversy Corner discussion was really good. I always enjoy Mark Geyer and Ray Hadley’s comments on Rugby League.

  19. Cougar Town has almost halved it premier ratings.
I cant see the excitment in MasterChef. I watched it last night for the first time ever and found it quite dull. The host or who ever he his is so annoying and does not act natural at all. And the amount of times he repeats things like we are all stupid. How many times do we have to be told that the salmon cuts need to be 180gms.

So is Matty Johns and Hellier’s shows both on Thursdays 7:30 for the particular states? I dont watch either but it would be good to know that the time slot could free up soon should these shows get cancelled.

  20. i watched the first 30 minutes of both the matty johns show and the footy show. the footy show did a heap better job of coering this huge story.in the first 30 minutes of the matty johns show where they where talking about the storm, there was 2 ad breaks. the footy show had none. 7 might it’s the producers. i can garuntee you now that’s rubbish.
