@CatFan, it wasn’t a lack of planning. ABC3 is the only ABC multichannel that has recieved dedicated govrnment funding. It had to be SD to give Rudd the best political return on his money.

Eh? The links were to Twitter where the pic has now been removed.

Greg your comments throughout this site sound more like spam than an opinion. Please submit comments which make sense or I won’t be approving them. I don’t mind robust opinions, including ones that idsagree with my own, but incomplete statements have no place here.

The links live to the metropolitan/regional news on ABC Local Radio or national news on ABC Radio National, ABC Local Radio & ABC Classic FM (except youth news on Triple J) are broadcast over various ABC radio outlets

Sorry Secret Squirrel it will only be in 720p (HDTV) The same as 7′s HD. Nine and Ten are the only channels with 1080. I have been told it’s very hard to pick the difference.

As I asked a year or two ago – why are SD set top boxes allowed to be sold when they won’t be able to receive a quarter of the channels? All set top boxes should have been HD.

Any level of planning by the ABC should have taken account that if an HD channel was necessary, it should be allocated to the most ‘niche’ channel in their line up which is obviously ABC3. If the ABC does not see a good enough take-up of the news channel I can see them requesting a change to the regulations to enable it to transmit in SD.

So the bottom line is that the news channel will be in HD due to lack of planning by ABC, which is bad management.

@ newschannel – “The ABC will change ABC1 to HD when analogue switch off happens” – Hmm, marginally increasing the quality of their number 1 channel so that only half the country can receive it? I don’t think so.

But in 2014 they could launch another true HD channel, and at the same time downgrade 24 to SD if they wanted to (which seems like the obvious choice because everyone would be able to receive it). Right now 24 has to be in HD because all networks are required by law to have an HD channel, and they can’t really change any of their other channels to HD because they’ve already established themselves as SD channels and ABC would probably attract a lot of criticism.

It was either on the HD channel or not at all.. as there was nowhere else to put the news channel.

The ABC will change ABC1 to HD when analogue switch off happens

@Catfan: You don’t understand – even if the footage is shot on a 2G mobile phone, each blocky pixel will be broadcast in glorious 1080 HD, straight into your loungeroom! It’ll be like living in the future. ;-)

“news is the least suitable for HD content.” Cat Fan
I agree and that set looks a bit like the BBC Newsnight set.

Catfan, HD boxes are now pretty cheap and if your local retailer is good they’ll swap them over for a discount to the purchase price, then she’ll have all channels no matter what for years to come.

I can’t believe they’re going to make this a HD channel which will limit accessibility (my mum only has an SD set top box for example) and of all the TV genres, news is the least suitable for HD content. Can you imaging the varying quality of news footage gathered from around the world…and how much is actually HD? Virtually none. Big mistake ABC.
