Glee confirms ‘Madonna sequel’

Ryan Murphy confirms another Madonna themed episode of Glee will be coming. But what about the woman herself?

“We are, we’re doing a sequel to the Madonna [episode],” Glee producer Ryan Murphy has told Access Hollywood.

The second Madonna episode is likely next season. Murphy wouldn’t elaborate on rumours that Madge might just make an appearance.

“But she’s sort of the muse of our show, I think now. She loves the show and has supported it. She gets the show is about arts education and so she’s very supportive about that.”

The first Madonna episode featured “Express Yourself,” “Borderline/Open Your Heart,” “Vogue,” “Like a Virgin,” “What It Feels Like for a Girl,” “4 Minutes” and “Like a Prayer.”

When asked if a Britney Spears episode is going to happen, Murphy said, “We love Britney, we’re talking to Britney. I think you have to be very careful on the show not to do too many tribute episodes. But she certainly has a huge body of work to pull from and the kids grew up with her so that is a consideration, they love her. ”

Yesterday the musical show was approved for a third season.

  1. Interesting that people seem to overlook the non-Madonna elements of the plot when they discuss the Madonna episode.

    * The whole virginity issue, involving six different characters
    * Kurt and Mercedes joining the Cheerios and finally getting to shine
    * Jesse enrolling at the school and joining the Glee club
    * The whole “treat women with respect” undercurrent

Seems like there was a lot more going on than just “Sue likes Madonna”. As for a Lady Gaga episode, they only perform two of her songs, so I don’t think it really compares to the 10 Madonna songs that featured in “The Power of Madonna”.

  2. Gee, I thought one Madonna episode was too many. The first one wasn’t even executed that well. The storyline was basically ‘Sue likes Madonna’ (and this lame idea was even recycled for the Olivia Newton John ep). Then again, only a fool watches Glee for its plot.

  3. well there doing a lady gaga ep so i can not see why they can not do a britney spears one she been around bloody lot longer than britney about 11 years and i m huge fan of britney so that would be like the biggest tv event for me but i have been following the britney glee ep very close 1st he said no then change his mind to yes and said what he said abvoe up there her manger been tweeting for a britney ep so i think it working and to all the brit haters out there dont know wat rong with australia but just dont watch it then

  4. Madonna has been accused by a well-known Aussie TV critic of trying to cash in on Glee’s success and she was labelled by the same critic as a hypocrite for being involved in a TV show when she “doesn’t allow her children to watch TV” (I dare say that her attitude has changed slightly in the nine years or so since she actually made that comment). Ryan Murphy approached Madonna (not the other way around) and the collaboration was a resounding success commercially (many cite it as the best episode to date, although obviously you can’t please everyone). Merely having Madonna’s name connected to the show generates publicity (good and bad). Obviously Ryan was happy enough with both the quality of the episode and the reception to it that he wants to do another themed episode. Madonna has given him permission to use anything he likes from her catalogue, so clearly she trusts him (and she’s stated publicly that she was delighted with the episode itself). Perhaps Glee is already a victim of the Tall Poppy Syndrome….

  5. I’m with you Kaz, if they can incorporate the songs without hurting the storyline then ok but it was pretty obvious during the first Madonna ep that they had to try really hard to fit the story with the songs.

  6. I thought the Madonna episode was one of the worst episodes the show has done. It was all gimmick with no wit. Also Rachel’s oversinging of Like A prayer was terrible. She was much better with Bonnie Tyler last week. No more gimmicks please.

  7. I love Glee, and the Madonna episode was great, but I think they are in danger of sacrificing storylines for the sake of cramming as many songs as possible into an episode.
The first half of season 1 had a great balance, but the current episodes are starting to concentrate a bit too much on the musical numbers. That might just be my opinion ??

  8. I’m all for Glee, however I think you can have too much of a good thing. The first Madonna ep was great as just that – a once off Madonna tribute. If it’s repeated every season, then it’ll loose it’s spark.

Oh – and please no Britney.
