Push for live Logies as Twitter rages

Updated: Columnist Catherine Deveny is dumped by The Age after her tweets about the Logie Awards.

Every year the Logies triggers a number of “fallout” stories. Last year it was Karl Stefanovic hosting the Today show in a buoyant mood and Gretel’s hosting duties. Some go back as far as the classic brawl between Ernie Sigley and Don Lane.

This year Twitter is at the centre of several stories.

After winners were leaked on Twitter ahead of being broadcast on Nine, there are calls for the ceremony to go live to air.

The broadcast is around 40 minutes delayed from Crown Palladium.

“At this stage, there are no plans to change the broadcast time of the Logies,” a Nine spokesman told the Herald Sun.

“As with all events that are broadcast in delay (eg, AFL football), people have a number of means by which they can spoil the result if they so wish – email, text, phone.”

TV Week described the Twitter revelations as disappointing. “In this time of modern technology we ask people to respect the event and the evening,” a spokeswoman said.

As well as Dannii Minogue’s tweet from the UK, Dave Hughes, Ruby Rose and Wil Anderson sent out thoughts via Twitter. Anderson’s tweets have been dubbed “toxic” after gags directed at Sigrid Thornton, Molly Meldrum, Rebecca Gibney and more.

Meanwhile outspoken columnist and occasional Q & A guest Catherine Deveny is under fire for her caustic tweets which targetted Bindi Irwin, Rove McManus, Richard Wilkins and even the In Memoriam montage.

The Sydney Morning Herald which slipped up by publishing an embargo article early was clicked just 36 times before it was pulled offline.

TV Tonight abided by all embargo information, publishing results after they had aired even after tipping on Sunday “Twitter will be unstoppable.”

Updated: Today, Deveny stood by her comments noting a gag about Bindi Irwin was using satire “to expose celebrity raunch culture and the sexual objectification of women, which is rife on the red carpet”.

“It was just passing notes in class, but suddenly these notes are being projected into the sky and taken out of context,” she said. “This (the Bindi Irwin comment) was a ludicrous remark that was as ridiculous as me saying I hope the dog that Molly Meldrum brought with him got drunk. She also said, “I love Rove. I worked for Rove for five years. I’ve publicly said and printed I would take a bullet for him. He endorsed my first book on the front cover.”

UPDATE #2: The Age’s Editor-In-Chief, Paul Ramadge, said tonight, “We are appreciative of the columns Catherine has written for The Age over several years but the views she has expressed recently on Twitter are not in keeping with the standards we set at The Age.”

  1. Patrick: You do know what happened, with the Michael Cole incident: It was edited out of the replay, and when the replay ran… they got 3000+ complaints, all about the offensive word and wanting it in again.

  2. I must say I looked at Wil and Cathine’s tweets on the night. The Rove comment from Catherine was a bit over the top. However, in context of some of Catherine’s tweets it fitted in with her witty and satorical views. You need to read these things knowing who the writer is. She was not trying to be serious.

  3. “As with all events that are broadcast in delay (eg, AFL football), people have a number of means by which they can spoil the result if they so wish – email, text, phone.”

This is no excuse for why they shouldn’t be shown live, its the opposite, AFL and the logies should both be live.

  4. Will Anderson’s tweets were one of the few highlights of the evening. The Logies could benefit from More tweeting in my opinion. If the hosts aren’t going to deliver any laughs on the night, may as well rely on the folks in the room to give the viewers at home some chuckles.

  5. regarding will anderson, it sound as if he has lost his mind, you start loosing credibility when you attack every single person you see for no good reason.

  6. i don’t see any reason why the logies shouldn’t be live, it cant be because they worried about finishing too late because the after parties go all night. also they cant be too worried about swearing because rove swearing a few year bak was left in uncensored.

  7. Australia now gets the Oscars live so why not the Logies?

They were indeed shown live back in the 60s and 70s – the Michael Cole swearing incident caused headlines back in 1972 due to it being aired live – with the offending bit edited out a few days later for the repeat.

Sometime in the 80s it went to delayed broadcast and then was shifted from March to May during the 90s – which I think is way too late – switch it back!

The Logies should definately go back to being live for sure – adds to the excitement and prevents any Twitter like spoilers from being made.

  8. I saw Will Anderson on Chelsea Lately, he crashed and burned there, wan’t funny at all and wasn’t able to come up even an iota of funny lines compared with the Yanks.

  9. If the Logies were ever to be shown live again (were they broadcast live in the 1960s or 1970s?), then it has to be done in all states. In the US, the Oscars, the Grammys and the Emmys, which are held in Los Angeles, are shown live into the West Coast at 5.30pm local time. In Australia, it will mean the Logies will have to be shown at around 5pm in WA.

  10. Why don’t they do it live?

If it means they will be up too late then maybe they will realize the event goes too long and should be cut back to say just 3 hours?

The only other way it to have a 100% ban on cell phones at future events and I don’t see that happening.
