US Skins gets the green light

MTV picks up the US pilot of Skins for 10 episodes with co-creator Brian Elsley writing and executive producing.

The US version of Skins is going ahead after MTV picked up the pilot for 10 episodes.

As with the UK version it will use unknown teenagers and retain having young writers on staff. Set in Baltimore,
co-creator Brian Elsley will be writing and executive producing the U.S. version. It also keeps its mix of sex, drugs and youthful rebellion. Whether it is as brash as the original series in depicting those subjects remains to be seen.

As reported earlier, Tony, Michelle and Chris retain their names but name changes include switching Cassie to Cadie, Jal to Cho, Sid to Stanley, and Abigail to Tabita, Anwar becomes Abbud. And it will still feature a gay, out and proud dancer switching him from Maxxie to a Hispanic boy named Teo.

MTV Liz Gateley has previously said, “Skins is one of those rare shows that cuts through to its core audience with unusually authentic stories due to the unique writing and casting process that Bryan pioneered.

“Having personally pursued the U.K. project for almost two years, I am beyond thrilled to bring it to MTV in the U.S. We intend to preserve the authenticity of the British version and are excited to collaborate with the original team to develop stories that will speak to American youth.”

  1. 10 or SBS should have a crack or at least make an offer. Wonder who’s distributing. Might be a rare case where the rights vest with the original producer/distributor, Channel 4?

Anyway 10 shouldn’t let Go have it cheap regardless. Wont be anymore than 12 eps? I’m sure there’s a 9.30pm gap somewhere. Too bad the UK version wouldn’t pull the numbers (SBS have?), season 1 was fantastic!

  2. So not looking forward to this! They’re gonna ruin it!
But the only good thing is that the characters represent a wider range of ethnic backgrounds, unlike the original skins, which basically only has white, black and indian.. (mostly white).

  3. I agree with vrom, ten bucks another channel will try and pick this show up. I miss the days when Skins was obscured from the spotlight. and I reallllllllllly don’t want Channel 9 to get its hands on it. They’ll just screw it around like they do with all their shows.
