War is hell

One scene in tomorrow's Pacific is so brutal and horrific in its depiction it's truly twisted stuff...

So far The Pacific has had some pretty brutal battle scenes.

But tomorrow night it’s relentless stuff as the marines fight in Peleliu, shot in a huge location in the You Yangs near Geelong.

There are two episodes airing because the second requires the additional MAV classification.

Having seen the episodes it’s not hard to see one couldn’t pass for a mere M. There’s some gruesome stuff going on here. Steven Spielberg usually also places restrictions on his products that rule out editing.

One scene in particular is so brutal and horrific in its depiction it’s truly twisted stuff…

Haven’t been turned that foetal since I watched Black Hawk Down on the big screen.

Next week will see two more episodes to get around the classification challenges too.

  1. Can somebody tell me has “Pacific” been dumped, delayed, finished or what. I have been looking at programmes and newspapers to finf out when the next episode will be on.

  2. 6 and 7 were crazy, but agreed on ep 9 – seriously tough to watch. The series has been amazing… Its stuff like this that reminds me how lucky we are in the way we live. To live through that for years like many did is insane.

  3. One of the things I’ve enjoyed about this series so far is that for once the Americans are showing some of the evil things their troops did as well as the heroic. Bayoneting a wounded Japanese soldier, the aforementioned dental work on a dead one and the choking to death of a wounded enemy too.

War is hell, and we need to be reminded that in all wars all sides do dreadful as well as brave and selfless things. Wars brutalise and emotionally damage those who fight in them, lifetime psychological scars as well as physical. That’s why war should be avoided at almost any cost.

And they swear a lot (often while naked) too!

  4. After watching “saving private ryan” on the Big Screen, i decided no more war moves.

I watched the melbourne episode and felt sick with the violence. So i won’t be watching tonight. But it will rate well.

  5. Interesting the comment about no editing. Radio NZ Mediawatch program mentioned that the version of The Pacific that was shown in NZ was edited by the production company from the HBO version (much like Top Gear has an international version)

  6. At the end of the day, this si what war is all about, not Jack Bauer on 24, it isn’t all wrapped up in 24 hours, it’s a long hard battle, it’s watching the 8 guys around you die bloody while you survive and you’re left wondering whether you’d rather be you or one of them…

There’s no respawn in real life…

  7. “so brutal and horrific in its depiction it’s truly twisted stuff.”

On at least one Australian forum some thought it funny. I suppose it’s so surreal it’s almost cartoonish. No doubt from a vivid description in Sledge’s book.
