Channel 7 Perth made the bold move of putting the Fremantle v Collingwood game on a 30 minute delay into Perth. They showed Today Tonight with a very strong Fremantle theme – pointless.

The ratings were way better than usual. The next step is to show a sold out Friday night game at Subiaco Oval live. Channel 9 Perth did when they had the rights to AFL. Channel 7 Perth still treat AFL fans with contempt.

Saturday certainly proved that idiots are running the commercial television networks. It is great to see Jessica Watson back safe, but once again we had these networks going totally overboard. Ironically for very little return. What idiot believed they could schedule the return of a yacht. All people get is hours of crap from reporters trying to fill in time. Not to mention some of the utterly nonsensical and moronic comments that are made. Like “she is steering the boat by herself”. Yea, der, she is alone, idiot. Then programs that were taken off, apparently were shown later. Unfortunately, nobody knew did they. So programs were missed. Typical network incompetence. It is high time these idiots were brought into line and forced to pick up their game.

God masterchef is a bore. all the crying is a joke. they havnt landed a jet full of 300 passengers and saved them from certain death. this is food people. maybe they should all go have some cheese on toast. ti didnt mind poh, she was hot. These people are crying losers.

  4. Johnson May 16, 2010 at 8:56 pm -

Even based on those preliminary figures, you can assume that more people watched the Jessica Watson homecoming on Nine and Seven than Ten/ONE.

  5. Ryano May 16, 2010 at 8:23 pm -

    @Jarred
Yep 7 suck. Hoping Ten/One take the majority of the games when the next TV rights go on sale.

  6. Ryano May 16, 2010 at 8:18 pm -

    @Dave
Yeah good news for Melb AFL fans, you just gotta wonder though, all of a sudden Better Homes & Gardens is not that important?
Why cant the AFL be on at 7.30 live every week, as the AFL allows.?
Wonder if Perth or Adelaide will get the game earlier? Doubt it.

  7. Daniel May 16, 2010 at 5:38 pm -

how did dennis and gnasher do better than neighbours

  8. David Knox May 16, 2010 at 2:18 pm -

Wouldn’t take those Jessica Watson broadcast figures at first glance. They don’t take into account, overruns (ie. some of those other arvo shows are also JW homecoming), plus Seven and TEN cut to digital channels. The 3 main channels were head to head from 11-2:08 but these figures don’t quite reflect that.

  9. Jarred May 16, 2010 at 12:45 pm -

    @ Ryano,
At the present time, it’s not live in Perth or Adelaide (where I live). That just makes no sense. Seven is butchering the AFL broadcast. Today for instance, the Port v Carlton match is on delay in Adelaide, it’s a frickin Adelaide team, show it live Seven like you are with this Friday night clash.

  10. Kuttsywood May 16, 2010 at 11:39 am -

Not very often, that Kids WB’s cartoons attract half a million people… Nine should be proud.

  11. Dave May 16, 2010 at 11:01 am -

    @ Ryano,

It was just announced on AFL Game Day on 7 that next week’s Friday night Clash (Geelong V Collingwood) is being shown Live into Melbourne @ 7:30pm, with Better Homes & Gardens being moved to 6:30pm Saturday.

  12. Jarred May 16, 2010 at 1:01 am -

    @ Ryano
    Totally Agree

  13. Ryano May 15, 2010 at 9:44 pm -

Biggest ratings for an AFL game in Perth I can recall outside a Final.
Why cant 7 dump BH&G every Friday of the AFL season? Why cant they play it on 7TWO or 7.30 Thursday or 6.30 Saturday?
They pay a ship load of cash for the AFL, yet they shoot themselves in the foot by delaying most AFL Friday nights by 3+hrs..in WA.

  14. Dave May 15, 2010 at 5:27 pm -

    @ Jarred,

I never said that it shouldn’t have been live into Adelaide & Perth as well, I just think you should get your facts straight when your whinging about it not being live into Melbourne when it was.

    Otherwise you just look stupid.

  15. Craig May 15, 2010 at 3:09 pm -

Oh no MC slipped below 1 million, must be on the way out now LOL. Still the top non news show Friday night.

  16. Jarred May 15, 2010 at 3:06 pm -

@ Dave, well it wasn’t live into Adelaide and it was brought forward in Perth, but still not live. If it was live into Melbourne, it should’ve been live into Adelaide and Perth as well.

  17. JB May 15, 2010 at 1:05 pm -

@Frankie, was live in Perth, and also Freo was playing. Huge numbers though.

Channel Nine can you please play NRL at a decent time on GO! Struggled to stay awake until 2am to watch Titans play, getting thrashed anyway so decided to fall asleep.

Seven will probably look at BH&G figures and say it’s beating Masterchef, but it gets thrashed against live NRL, and AFL numbers are bigger too, so just put live AFL on. BH&G could be put on Thursday night.

  18. ryan May 15, 2010 at 12:48 pm -

Ten Axe ncis and numbers on fridays and bring something new to the slots.

  19. Johnson May 15, 2010 at 12:44 pm -

@Frankie: 315,000 is the highest audience for an AFL match in Perth so far this year (even higher than the West Coast-Fremantle derby 12 days earlier) considering it was between 1st (Collingwood) and 2nd (Fremantle) on the AFL ladder. It was shown on 30 minute delay.

  20. ryan May 15, 2010 at 12:43 pm -

Dont know why people dont watch masterclass, esp older people, since its just pro’s showing you how to cook and nothing really to do with contestants. I’m gonna cook pork crackling tonight now:)

  21. Peter May 15, 2010 at 12:37 pm -

maybe seven should permanetly move BH&G to thurs 7.30 in melb/ade/perth and have the footy at 7.30 every week. it will help its thurs share as im sure BH&G would do better then vicar, and will help the footy ratings. it wont be 100% live every week, but better then the 1 1/2 hour delay it usually has!
watching the match live last night was great!

  22. koverstreet May 15, 2010 at 12:22 pm -

@ tristan – nah I love MC but masterclass is not essential viewing. having said that I do have it on in the background and watch some of it here and there.

  23. aznfratboy May 15, 2010 at 11:55 am -

@ Brandex, better lead-ins, better timeslots. Glee skews toward young females, Idol is the king of the 18-34 female demo, thus why Glee can grow out of Idol, especially it’s targetting singing fanatics anyway. It’s also got MasterChef here, where it only has 7pm Project previously.

  24. Frankie May 15, 2010 at 11:33 am -

315,000 for AFL in Perth, that seems massive but I guess give them what they want and they’ll watch. Was it live or just better than the normal delay our friends in the west put up with when it comes to sport?

  25. Tristan May 15, 2010 at 11:02 am -

I didn’t watch Masterclass last night, first Masterchef episode that I’ve missed this season. Seems like I’m not the only one who’s stopped watching it

  26. Dave May 15, 2010 at 12:01 am -

@ Jarred– what are you whinging about the AFL game was Live into Melbourne tonight…

  27. David Knox May 14, 2010 at 11:37 pm -

    It was already listed: 156,000.

  28. Bogues May 14, 2010 at 9:03 pm -

David: Do you have the figure for flash forward from last night (11:30/11:45)?

  29. ryan May 14, 2010 at 8:18 pm -

@callas pretty sure they dont like each other

  30. Jarred May 14, 2010 at 7:49 pm -

@ Ryan, That is good, but why don’t they do broadcast the footy live into Adelaide and Melbourne as well. Grrrrr

  31. ryan May 14, 2010 at 6:06 pm -

great to see 7 put the afl on early for perth

  32. 2.5 men May 14, 2010 at 4:05 pm -

i think the amazing race is more of a family type show, 7:30pm would’ve been a better time slot.

But i guess its too late to chuck it on that time slot on the account of people who didn’t watch it at 9:30 wouldn’t bother to start watching now seeing as they have missed to first 3 (?) episodes

  33. Jerome May 14, 2010 at 3:42 pm -

7′s thursday isn’t good. the 7:30 slot seems to be doing ok. and criminal minds is atleast doing better than cougartown and HIMYM. but it’s the footy show that ensures 7 never get close to a win being so ahead for a 2hr block. i don’t think the amazing race should ever return to 7 in primetime after this season. in the last 12 months it has been tried at 7:30 and failed, 8:30 and failed 9:30 is the only slot it’s had some luck in and now it’s not working there either. it’s either a 10:30 or 7two show now.

  34. JB May 14, 2010 at 3:20 pm -

Why did Perth get Matty Johns Show last night??

While i love Criminal Minds, Seven should never have taken Cougar Town and HIMYM off. All they needed to do was put Amazing Race at 7.30. I hope that crap British show bombs even worse next week. Looks absolutely terrible, and definitely not worthy of an 8.30 timeslot on a commercial network. Looks like something for GO! Hope it fails and Seven gets a kick in the pants.

  35. callas May 14, 2010 at 3:17 pm -

great to see Glee getting those figures… shame that both Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel (whom i both adore) couldn’t be slotted together to do a number a la “Wicked” style but having them in it was sufficient enough… Kristin doing the finale number was pure class !!

  36. catherine May 14, 2010 at 3:14 pm -

Channel 7 are stuffed thursday nights. They can never come up with a good schedule.Move the amazing race to 8:30. I like the double episodes. Its a shame ff is on so late. The episodes are really good in particular last night. Its a shame when it first began it was up there then really dropped off.

Whatever that new show is that they are putting on at 8:30 next week looks horrible.

  37. Nick May 14, 2010 at 1:49 pm -

Less than 450,000 for Criminal Minds. C’mon Seven, HIMYM gave you better numbers than this. Even Cougar Town limped over with better numbers.

As for the Wednesday night front, will be back for Lie to Me next week. The only saviour for Wednesdays has been Spicks and Specks, but I might let the Timeshift take care of that one…

  38. Tony May 14, 2010 at 1:46 pm -

    Brandex says:
    May 14, 2010 at 12:40 pm

Brandex, Glee is behind American Idol in the US and Masterchef here, it is lifted by the larger audiences of the show before it flowing through

  39. Brandex May 14, 2010 at 12:40 pm -

I don’t understand Glee’s ratings. Both here and in the US the ratings seemed to jump after the hiatus. From around 800-900 thousand to 1.2 Million here and 8 Million to 12 Million over there (coincidently it’s by about the same ratio). Maybe the hiatus gave people who had missed the first half a chance to catch up and realise how awesome the show is.

  40. Johnson May 14, 2010 at 12:17 pm -

Atrocious ratings for TAR considering it was double episodes and did not finish in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth until around midnight. May see a big boost in timeshifted figures when they come out next week.
Better Homes & Gardens did well in Perth, coming second behind Glee but ahead of Getaway.

  41. Paul May 14, 2010 at 12:02 pm -

What the hell are Channel 7 doing? All there shows on Thursday (Vicar,Criminal,Race) are all doing poorly. And putting two episodes of Amazing Race isnt going to help, esp at 9:30! Next week they plan to change things slighlty, by having Benidorm on instead of Criminal Minds, but still having 2 episodes of Amazing Race afterwards, which is ridiculous.

Why can’t Ch 7 put Amazing Race on at 7:30? Just for 1 week. Just to see if it goes well. And if it dosent, fine. But something needs to change and Vicar of Dibley has to go. Even Cougar Town or HIMYM was doing better as I recall.

And I was so looking forward to watching Amazing Race over a period of time, not having it shuffled to late night and at double speed…

  42. Craig May 14, 2010 at 11:52 am -

I haven’t seen last nights Glee yet, my parents don’t like it which I dont get as they like all the reality Dance shows, why not this?

Good numbers for Glee and MC, shame TEN can’t manage to get 2nd for the night more often!

  43. John B May 14, 2010 at 11:36 am -

I agree with moving SVU, possibly a direct swap with House. Nothing to lose i say.
ps. David, was good to hear you on yesterday’s Mediaweek Podcast.

  44. dave May 14, 2010 at 11:18 am -

I’m with you David, Kristin Chenoweth is an american treasure. Pocket rocket with an amazing voice and great comic timing. She was terrific in her Emmy winning turn on Pushing Daisies. I agree with Angelsgal and others who find the tonal shift too stark with SVU. I think the latter is a really fine show but needs another slot.

  45. dean May 14, 2010 at 11:17 am -

Horrible ratings for Amazing Race, but that’s to be expected when it was a double episode on for 2 hours at 9:30!

Glad to see Criminal Minds doing horribly, maybe Seven will come to their senses and put TAR on earlier or bring back HIMYM.

What does Tx1 mean with The Big Bang Theory?

  46. Alex May 14, 2010 at 11:15 am -

@koverstreet – you’re right Sea Patrol was a lot like an old Star Trek ep! Was a good ep, glad it rated well. Hopefully it will build back up to 1.2/3 that it was getting earlier.

  47. David Knox May 14, 2010 at 10:43 am -

Kristin Chenoweth was sensational on Glee last night.

  48. angelsgal May 14, 2010 at 10:29 am -

Go Glee. Im absolutley loving this show. Ten should really have something young skewing in the post glee slot, House or NCIS LA would probably be a timeslot winner if it was on post Glee. SVU is just not compatable.

  49. koverstreet May 14, 2010 at 10:01 am -

Great to see Sea Patrol up by a 100k or so. Last nights ep was excellent and reminded me a bit of a classic Star Trek episode where the enterprise would come across some unknown civilization that on the surface was paradise but in reality was far from it.

  50. CK May 14, 2010 at 9:53 am -

what the hell happened to 7 last night? 490k for amazing race? and did the matty johns show really play in WA for 5000 ppl?

  51. woftram May 14, 2010 at 7:47 am -

The drop off from ABC1 News to the 7.30 Report on Wednesday of 365,000 to 220,000 (almost 40%) should be frightening at the ABC. Even more so that Kerry O’Brien is the most highly paid presenter there. Here’s my suggestion: Get rid of O’Brien, save money and start producing a national program that is not so Sydney-centric. 80% of the viewers do not live in Sydney, so no wonder they turn off. Have a look a the 7pm project to see how they include other parts of Australia.

Maybe to drive viewers to the main channel premieres…

  53. jc May 13, 2010 at 9:22 pm -

david, do you know why seven’s plus7 doesn’t screen catch up eps of the pacific?

  54. dave May 13, 2010 at 6:54 pm -

I am not surprised that Hey Hey has slipped nearly half a million viewers since its return this year (one third of its opening figure), but I also think that not only have our tv habits changed in the ensuing decade, but the style of tv shows – pacing, editing etc seems to make the escapades of Dags and the Duck and the rest of the larrickins a bit lazy and sloppy – but they are doing exactly what they did 10, 15 and 20 years ago. I tape it and fast forward the boring bits! I am the first to bemoan the ridiculous number of edits and under par camera work that pervades current lifestyle, drama and some entertainment shows, but also have been influenced by the changes in storytelling devices and short attention span narratives. Hey Hey may well fall below the mighty million sooner rather than later

Great to see MC back on top where it belongs – next week I here there are 3 contestants taking part in the celebrity chef challenge on Tuesday – that makes things more interesting.

Lost has Lost it. The episode of episodes was such a major non answering, non event.

You guys should read a interview that was just done with the writers, the interviewer basically called them out of their rubbish in the ‘across the sea” episode. They got really rude towards the fans, angry even. They seemed to resent the fan base, angered by he fact that people actually want some answers. Shock horror. The creators are coming off like whiney little schoolboys who have been found out.

I doubt Hey Hey would get better ratings on a Saturday, especially since poor ratings was part of the reason for axing it in 1999, despite it being shown on a Saturday.

Also, I think Juno failed to gain decent ratings, even with a big lead-in is because people are over watching movies filled with ads.

  58. Mark May 13, 2010 at 2:40 pm -

How can it be at all posible that One and 3/4 million Australians can stand to watch the Mad Cravat salivating over just who he eats next??

It’s utter madness tuning into utter rubbish. Who said never over estimate the audiences intelligence.

  59. vm May 13, 2010 at 2:02 pm -

@ Natalie, I totally agree with you regarding Lost last night, really they answered nothing. This season has been one huge dissapointment, with only one or two decent episodes. Last season was so much better. I will keep watching but i know i will be dissapointed.

  60. koverstreet May 13, 2010 at 1:57 pm -

@ Saz – it’s been fantastic entertainment although perhaps too many musical acts. Red Faces last night was hilarious. But MC will be over before the next series starts later in the year and i can’t imagine anything else 10 has at that time will be serious competition.

Lost: “It feels like they only just realised they need to answer these mysteries and so are just making up any old crap.”

Therein lies the crux of the problem with Lost They never had any answers to begin with. What did they Really answer last night.??? Nothing really, i mean actually answer things. We found out..they are brothers, yep everyone pretty much had guessed that already and the donkey wheel (with no logical explanation of what it is or who actually installed it) and the lame adam and eve thing that no-ones cares about at all.

Lame non answers…Why cant they hurt each other…cause mother says so. Why cant they leave……cause mother says so. What is the cave, the liquid…..no explanation. Where did their false mother come from..no explanation. What is the smoke monster..no explanation. Where did there actual mother come from..no explanation. How can their false mother fill in a deep well with stone and dirt overnight, then proceed to wipe out an entire village with armed men…no explanation and stupid.

Who built the dam temples, statues, lighthouses..who did all the hieroglyphics..etc etc..guess they just wont explain it cause they cant think of a last minute answer. This “the phantom menace” of Lost, manages to destroy the past and the present of the show. Only 3 hours to go, they are not gunna answer anything in any concrete way.

  62. Saz May 13, 2010 at 1:08 pm -

Hey Hey has been good, it just has a lot of strong competition on Wednesday. Nothing is beating MC at the moment – they should move it to Saturday where they can get big numbers against fairly average offerings against 7 and 10 (ABC does very well after 7pm).

  63. Kerri May 13, 2010 at 1:07 pm -

Turned tv on last night to find Hey Hey. Watched for couple minutes before my husband said “I’ve had enough of this already!”. I agreed. It was painful, cringeworthy viewing. Watched chuck instead. Very cool!!

  64. koverstreet May 13, 2010 at 1:01 pm -

Seems Hey Hey was the #2 show of the night in 25-54.

  65. Tony Bee May 13, 2010 at 12:32 pm -

@JB – But wan’t it clever on Lost the way they tied the episode to finding of the skeletons and bag of stones in one of the very first episodes? Surely, they couldn’t have had the whole plot worked out that far ahead?

  66. Johnson May 13, 2010 at 12:27 pm -

Due to the Dockers-Pies AFL match tomorrow, Channel Seven Perth tonight (Thursday) will have double episodes of Home and Away at 7pm, a “special advance screening” of Better Homes & Gardens at 8pm, Criminal Minds at 9pm, and The Amazing Race at 10pm. This will be the first time Getaway goes head to head against BH&G and it will be interesting to see how the two programs rate.

  67. koverstreet May 13, 2010 at 12:24 pm -

Yeh I haven’t watched myself but I’ve seen plenty of people say it’s dead boring. The question is how low does it have to go before Seven bone it?? To go from 1.7m to under a mil in a few weeks is bad news for Seven.

  68. Allie May 13, 2010 at 12:19 pm -

HHIS = Dead in the Water. Without the support of Melbourne, it is a total lame duck, or should I say, plucked duck. MasterChef is slaughtering it. They may bring it back for a second lot of shows later this year after MCA has finished but I would be really surprised if it is renewed for 2011. Critical mass just isn’t there for it.

  69. Guy May 13, 2010 at 12:16 pm -

Good to see MC back on top. I must say Tuesdays challenges are pretty dull this year and the fact Jonathan was there made me not tune in at all because i dont like the guy. However last night was awesome. The show is going from strength to strength. I am tipping it to beat State Of Origin again in a couple of weeks.

  70. LostForever May 13, 2010 at 11:34 am -

It’s good to see The Pacific is not doing as well as ch 7 hoped. After promoting a ten min ad on 7Two making Lost late to start I’m totally boycotting it. My mum thinks its rubbish.

  71. chk chk May 13, 2010 at 11:07 am -

Chuck last night was really good, I can’t believe it takes this long to make it to FTA, hopefully Go! keeps it on that same timeslot. WDYTA with Brooke Shields was also good, I didn’t know that she’s half Italian and has descended from French aristocracy!

  72. DanR May 13, 2010 at 10:49 am -

Hey Hey would be dead in the water without Melbourne’s loyal support

  73. joey@FoodiePop May 13, 2010 at 10:38 am -

Nothing like star power to put MC back on top in a big way. Tony Bilson, Tetsuya, and Michel Roux certainly helped last night.

  74. JB May 13, 2010 at 10:28 am -

Except for Masterchef, it seems everything was down across the board last night. Why? lol at 2.5 Men’s Adelaide figure. 4th in timeslot.
And bloody mum only recorded 2nd ep of The PAcific. Not happy.

@Peter. I’m with you, i don’t know how to feel about Lost now. Last night was interesting and answered some questions, but at the same time it was completely ridiculous and asked more things. I feel cheated. The past 5 seasons have been awesome and now feels like a complete waste. Last season ended in a bang, and despite not answering the questions i think i would have rathered it ended then wondering if they managed to change the past.
It feels like they only just realised they need to answer these mysteries and so are just making up any old crap.

  75. Bruce Banner May 13, 2010 at 10:13 am -

Bye Bye Hey Hey, it’s not been fun this time around.
