Paul Barry to temp as Media Watch host

Broadcaster and journalist Paul Barry will return to the Media Watch chair in August, when Jonathan Holmes takes long service leave from the ABC.

Broadcaster and journalist Paul Barry will return to the Media Watch chair in August, when Jonathan Holmes takes long service leave from the ABC.

Barry hosted the show from 1999 to 2000 but was sacked by then head of the ABC Jonathon Shier after an interview with ABC Director Donald McDonald on the subject of government funding.

Media Watch itself was shortly dumped thereafter but reinstated in 2002 after Shier was himself sacked.

Holmes has hosted Media Watch since 2008 but served as executive producer of Four Corners, Foreign Correspondent and The 7.30 Report.

He will return to the role in February next year.

Barry, who has written books on Kerry Packer, Alan Bond and James Packer, will host the program for three months.

  1. So glad that Jonathan Holmes will be back after his LSL. I had thought that he was leaving for good. Last week’s MW was a cracker on the media-Bypassing the gatekeepers. As others have said, MW has had some of the most fearless and best presenters of any program, JH is one of my favourites. Their production crew must be tops too.

  2. This is one show that gets the host right.
And to top it off ,as others have said, the delivery is spot on

Great show to watch and does help keep the “media” honest or brings them into account. Sometimes it is just plain enjoyable to watch them “poke fun” at newspapers too especially in NT.

  3. There is an embarrassment of riches with Media Watch hosts. The up side is that JH will return in Feb, the other upside is that Paul Barry gets to strut his stuff for a few months. No downside, actually. I’m with Earthquake – David Marr was tops! Thankfully there is a proliferation of panel shows and commentary platforms for someone with David’s talents. With an election within the year, there will be lots of opportunities and plenty of fodder for Media Watch.
