Rove daytime talkshow pilot at CBS

Rove McManus is poised to front a US  daytime talkshow alongside US actress Valerie Bertinelli, best known from One Day at a Time and Hot in Cleveland.

Variety reports that Say It Now is in development with CBS as a  replacement for As the World Turns which is due to end  in September.

As tipped by TV Tonight, a pilot was recently shot.

Variety says of McManus “the host has been looking at doing projects in the U.S. for some time, having previously worked with Steve Carell’s company on a potential show. McManus is a huge star in his native Australia, where he’s hosted a talkshow on the TEN Network.”

But the show has to compete with at least three other formats also vying to become the replacement for As the World Turns.

  1. Like him or not, Rove was a big fish in a small pond here. The pairing does seem a little odd – i assume they have put him and Valerie through screen tests to extract some chemistry. It is interesting how divisive his persona is on this site. The only other person i think who comes close is Daryl Somers, a figure I always thought Rove was inspired by. Hey Hey’s axing in 1999, and Rove’s ascension in the same year was for me, an interesting segue. Perhaps Bert, Don and Graham not withstanding, variety hosts are often far less interesting than their array of guests and regulars. Certainly Daryl and Rove are for me. I don’t tune in to either of them for their sparkling characters, but for their megastar guests or musical acts. America is a notoriously tough market to thrive in. Just ask Working Dog and Gina Riley/Jane Turner.

  2. Rove started on Community Tv and then got his show on Channel Ten and now is trying in Hollywood . I think he skipped a stage and should have tried a show on Australian cable television (The Comedy Channel most likely) .but he is expecting to make much more money so I guess thats why he went from Channel Ten to Hollywood. Foxtel not good enough for him or he isnt good enough for Foxtel ?? one or the other.

  3. Best of Luck Rove. Good to see another aussie in the USA.
I would like to see anyone whos knocking him, to see if they can do a better job. Tall poppy sydrome is alive and well in oz isnt it??

  4. Geez I can’t believe some of the dribble that is being spouted regarding this. Ok you might not be a fan of the guy, but don’t knock him for trying. Good luck to him I say and I hope the show gets a go, to rub it in to some of the so called experts here.

  5. @JJ: I don’t know how you can consider programs that get more than a million viewers to be flops. “Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation rates well over that, and “Good News Week”, “The 7PM Project” and his own live show are far from failures.

Rove’s competition for the three years in which he won the Gold Logie included 2002 winner Georgie Parker and 2006 winner John Wood, not exactly unpopular people. Add to them Libbie Tanner, Delta Goodrem, and Bec Cartright and your assertion that there was no competition is shown to as ridiculous as your previous statement about all his shows being flops and failures.

It’s fine that you don’t like him, but don’t make stuff up. You just look silly.

  6. Lars, as some have said here Rove had virtually no competition in his format. He would belittle guests with his “Who would you turn gay for crap” and deliver us boring interviews week in week out. Although not exactly huge in status Andrew Denton would be a talent that could work anywhere. An intelligent, witty and entertaining interviwer that would kick Roves butt to the kerb. It’s not about tall poppys folks cos Rove just wasn’t that good, simple as that

  7. I’m with you @CatFan: Rove has done well, especially for his age. His production company is unquestionably one of Australia’s most successeful. His on air-tallent is questionable, but for a certain segment of the market he proves popular. Also of note is that he came from Community TV.

Personally I hope he succeeds, if not for his own success, but to ensure he doesn’t come back to Australian TV as host anytime soon. (Behinds the scenes I have no issues with).

  8. Mediocre? Nah. Over-rated? Most definately. Will he survive over there? No!. Will he can back here and inflict more garbage on us? Unfortunately more then likely
