Rove McManus is poised to front a US daytime talkshow alongside US actress Valerie Bertinelli, best known from One Day at a Time and Hot in Cleveland.
Variety reports that Say It Now is in development with CBS as a replacement for As the World Turns which is due to end in September.
As tipped by TV Tonight, a pilot was recently shot.
Variety says of McManus “the host has been looking at doing projects in the U.S. for some time, having previously worked with Steve Carell’s company on a potential show. McManus is a huge star in his native Australia, where he’s hosted a talkshow on the TEN Network.”
But the show has to compete with at least three other formats also vying to become the replacement for As the World Turns.

I’m with Family Guy’s Peter Griffin. I believe her name is Valerie Bertandernie.
At the end of the day the Yanks will be the judge and jury. Will be interesting to see what transpires
Like him or not, Rove was a big fish in a small pond here. The pairing does seem a little odd – i assume they have put him and Valerie through screen tests to extract some chemistry. It is interesting how divisive his persona is on this site. The only other person i think who comes close is Daryl Somers, a figure I always thought Rove was inspired by. Hey Hey’s axing in 1999, and Rove’s ascension in the same year was for me, an interesting segue. Perhaps Bert, Don and Graham not withstanding, variety hosts are often far less interesting than their array of guests and regulars. Certainly Daryl and Rove are for me. I don’t tune in to either of them for their sparkling characters, but for their megastar guests or musical acts. America is a notoriously tough market to thrive in. Just ask Working Dog and Gina Riley/Jane Turner.
Rove started on Community Tv and then got his show on Channel Ten and now is trying in Hollywood . I think he skipped a stage and should have tried a show on Australian cable television (The Comedy Channel most likely) .but he is expecting to make much more money so I guess thats why he went from Channel Ten to Hollywood. Foxtel not good enough for him or he isnt good enough for Foxtel ?? one or the other.
Best of Luck Rove. Good to see another aussie in the USA.
I would like to see anyone whos knocking him, to see if they can do a better job. Tall poppy sydrome is alive and well in oz isnt it??
Geez I can’t believe some of the dribble that is being spouted regarding this. Ok you might not be a fan of the guy, but don’t knock him for trying. Good luck to him I say and I hope the show gets a go, to rub it in to some of the so called experts here.
@JJ: I don’t know how you can consider programs that get more than a million viewers to be flops. “Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation rates well over that, and “Good News Week”, “The 7PM Project” and his own live show are far from failures.
Rove’s competition for the three years in which he won the Gold Logie included 2002 winner Georgie Parker and 2006 winner John Wood, not exactly unpopular people. Add to them Libbie Tanner, Delta Goodrem, and Bec Cartright and your assertion that there was no competition is shown to as ridiculous as your previous statement about all his shows being flops and failures.
It’s fine that you don’t like him, but don’t make stuff up. You just look silly.
Anybody know what breed of seeing eye dog Valerie Bertinelli kicked to deserve this sentence.
Lars, as some have said here Rove had virtually no competition in his format. He would belittle guests with his “Who would you turn gay for crap” and deliver us boring interviews week in week out. Although not exactly huge in status Andrew Denton would be a talent that could work anywhere. An intelligent, witty and entertaining interviwer that would kick Roves butt to the kerb. It’s not about tall poppys folks cos Rove just wasn’t that good, simple as that
hello all of you tall poppy cutters, it’s so lovely ignoring your comments yet again.
I’m with you @CatFan: Rove has done well, especially for his age. His production company is unquestionably one of Australia’s most successeful. His on air-tallent is questionable, but for a certain segment of the market he proves popular. Also of note is that he came from Community TV.
Personally I hope he succeeds, if not for his own success, but to ensure he doesn’t come back to Australian TV as host anytime soon. (Behinds the scenes I have no issues with).
Mediocre? Nah. Over-rated? Most definately. Will he survive over there? No!. Will he can back here and inflict more garbage on us? Unfortunately more then likely
I hope we get to see it here in Oz.
Good on him. I hope the show gets picked up.
Good onya Rove.
It seems that the tall poppy syndrome and cultural cringe is alive and well in Australia.
Rove is a good guy. What’s with all the cynical d***s on here. Sure, he’s no Jon Stewart, but he’s better than most American talk show hosts
@Tv tragic. If you believe Rove is no a ‘huge star’ in Australia, then tell us who you think is then.
You Rove haters obviously have no idea about the daytime chat shows. This combination is less random than Regis and Kelly and their show is huge. He’s a former actor from the 1960s and she’s a former sopaie actress.
It seems everyone In this country is “Anti” all of our sucessful stars, you can never please the viewing public ,and I for one am getting sick of this tall poppy syndrome us aussies seem to dish out .
There’s no issue with a US entertainment journal phrasing Rove as a huge star in Australia, as a shorthand way of communicating to that readership how successful his brand has been. He’s a household name, if clearly a polarising one. You can pretty much count on two hands the number of successful stars-turned-production companies in this country (Somers, Vizard, Denton, Working Dog, Jane / Gina etc) and Roving has a place beside them. Not bad at his age. The Anti-Rove lobby is a bit of a broken record.
@ Mark…. its quite easy to win 3 gold logies when your against even lesser known no bodies…. The logies are a joke in oz… everyone knows it. They mean nothing.
@Secret Squïrrel….he is a “mediocre talent at best” that has won awards. Which basically means there was nothing decient for anyone to actually vote for.
The shows of his I actually saw… yea I laughed….. laughted at him cos it was so embarrassingly unfunny.
What happened to his last “pilot” in the US eh?
@Secret Squïrrel
I 100% agree. IMO they are just Rove haters with nothing better to do than just write comments like that.
I am not a fan of Rove and never really have been but the fact remains is that he is a huge star here if you like it or not. His achievements over the years have been well deserved and i wish him all the best in America. Over there he is relatively new to them remember so just because he has been around here for ages doesnt mean he will automatically fail.
I’m unconvinced he has what it takes to succeed in America. He doesn’t have what Americans want.
I think he is talented in many ways, with charm and charisma and a quick wit, but he needs a better format than just a bog-standard talk show, yet nobody is offering him anything else.
@ Secret Squirrel His production company has made nothing but flops and failures and of course he has won awards, for all his time on TV he was the only talk show host this country had so of course he’s going to win awards because there was simply no competition and no one to stand in his way. He was also axed by Ch 9 if you recall and if it wasn’t for a third rate station like Ch 10 keeping him on air with such low ratings he would have gone and disappeared long long ago which is what is going to happen to him in the US.
“it could of been worse…they might of wanted him to co-host with Peter Helliar!!”
Or Dave Hughes.
And if we were talking “mediocre talent” you just couldn’t go past Hey Hey It’s (Regurgitated) Saturday. I’m at a loss to understand how that has managed not just to make a comeback, but to have a viewing audience. Who watches it??
I just love how some of you are so keen to come on here and try to cut the man down with your predictions of failure. You proffer your personal opinions as fact while dismissing evidence to the contrary.
“Huge star” might be a bit of hyperbole but you can’t deny that the guy is popular here. Whether you like him or not, he served his apprenticeship and worked hard to get to the top of the light entertainment tree in this country. Calling him “mediocre talent at best” completely ignores the fact that he has won numerous awards (both popularly and critically awarded) and that his production company continues to make several successful television programs.
Rove’s style as a host isn’t always my thing either, but I recognise what he has achieved and, like ducko and CatFan, wish him well in his new endeavours.
Considering the massive lame factor which inhabits most American sitcoms and talk shows, perhaps US audiences will warm to his brand of humour. It’s not to my personal taste but I also wish him well. USA is a massive, crazy market and if he succeeds it’ll be through determination and hard work, which is what brought him success here.
Good Luck to him
He’ll never make it, he was never a ratings success here it won’t be any different over there. The only difference is he’ll get the boot much quicker, I don’t think any network will put up with mediocre ratings year after year after year like our Channel Ten did for all those years.
I’m not a fan of Rove’s, but I wish him well.
While Rove is a nice guy and I’m really proud that he started his career on Community TV in Melbourne, I’m afraid I’ve never thought that he was as good as others have said. Good luck to him anyway and hope the Americans warm to him.
it could of been worse…they might of wanted him to co-host with Peter Helliar!!
@tv tragic +1
Hope the show works..He is funny and did win 3 Gold Logies, before the sms voting system came in..Good luck to Rove
Unless they make it campy–like the 4th hour of Today (US)–I can’t see this getting picked up. It seems very Z-list.
So the Rove haters are up early this weekend…
Randomness: this pairing has it in spades
Rove a “huge star” in Australia, please. Rove is a mediocre talent at best. Even if Rove works in the States it won’t be for long. What IS funny is that he thinks he has talent…..
