Sunday’s Big Bang ratings theory

GO!'s ratings share for Sunday again helps it to win the night for Nine thanks to the lure of The Big Bang Theory and Top Gear repeats.

It was another strong Sunday for GO! with its 4.6% share eclipsing both SBS channels on 3.4% despite the network having quality arthouse content with Who Do You Think You Are?, Movie: Mrs Mandela and a repeat of Saved.

The broad appeal of GO!’s repeats of Big Bang Theory (328,000) and Top Gear (266,000) was streets ahead of other digital channel offerings including the MotoGP on ONE (134,000), Calliou on ABC2 (116,000) and Movie: The Wilby Conspiracy on 7TWO (125,000).

GO! more than doubled its direct competitors with 7TWO managing 2.0% while ONE was 1.8%, ABC2 was 0.8%, ABC 0.3% and SBS TWO 0.3%. That share added to Nine gave the network the winning edge on Sunday.

Meanwhile MasterChef reached a big 1.89m viewers as it reached the halfway point. Underbelly nudged 1.6m and Bones wrapped its season with 1.32m.

On ABC1 Agatha Christie’s Poirot (926,000) managed to better Doctor Who (914,000).

Best for SBS was the Maggie Beer repeat episode of Who Do You Think You Are? on 206,00.

  1. Courtney you’re right… I went back and checked TEN’s Press Release which actually said it was a high for the MasterChef Challenge -the name they give to Sunday episodes. Should have picked up on that before. Gotta read the fine print with this lot.

  2. Actually it isn’t a ratings high for MasterChef, it did reach over 1.9m on Wednesday if I am not correct. It is the highest rated Challenge episode though.

  3. Here’s Lucy is now on Go…surely this is a ratings winner….along with Bewitched, Jeannie, Flintstones…Get smart…brilliant…now add Golden Girls, Mary Tyler Moore, Threes company etc and will hit 10%…..

  4. 7TWO could really do with some comedy and animation e.g. a Family Guy marathon on a weekend night or maybe have Family Guy 5 nights a week at 9pm?

  5. i agree, 7 have so many under-repeated shows that could be huge on 7two. i mean My name is earl was getting up to 1.6m, and those episodes have only been played once, can you imagine if that was on 9 how many times it would be repeated, and how well it would rate well every time.

but next week 7two have a new sunday night lineup with City Homicie and Holby Blue. i think it will do a bit better but it should have been done weeks ago. there are lots of other slots cleaning out that could be replaced with good comedy(R) blocks.

  6. I agree that 7Two is lacking a comedy lineup; not necessarily on a Sunday night but any night of the week would be good for repeats of HIMYM, 30 rock, Parks and Recreation, family guy, American dad; could be quite a good lineup.

  7. Seven need to think about tapping into the audience looking for something light on a Sunday night. They have some real gems in 30 Rock and Family Guy buried away in late slots on the main channel that would have great repeat value on 7Two on Sundays.

  8. BBT initially didn’t rate for nine. Just goes to show what perserverance can do. I hope they give the Middle a chance to rate on nine, as that’s another little gem. havn’t been able to catch it on GO as i watch Ugly Betty at the same time. I hope it comes back to nine when they get up to new episodes.

  9. Maybe a clue to the success to Go on Sunday nights is that apart from crime, punishment and cooking there is very little on the box. Its a good night for us to ‘catch up’ on other viewing.

  10. I can understand the ratings for Go on Sunday nights. Mr Beckala loves Top Gear and I’ve only just discovered Big Bang Theory because of Go (I really hate Charlie Sheen so I’ve never been able to handle it after Two and a Half Men).
