@ andrew, The ratings for the AFL might be down slightly but you have to take into account the 3hours of screentime that the AFL offers, which is able to hold a large audience until 11:30. If you look at the network shares for the main free to air channels… Seven clearly wins out with a 4.1% share over its nearest rival Nine. The basic fact is – have AFL on Friday Nights and you win the night, not to mention all the natural breaks between goals for ad time, then it is fairly reasonable why the AFL can demand $1billion

  3. Allie July 5, 2010 at 9:52 am -

@TDJ – 800K IS a freaking bad result. The afternoon soapie “the Bold and the Beautiful” had more viewers in Perth than HHIS did. The bottom is falling out of HHIS’s ratings in triple fast time. From 2M for its reunion shows it now only rates 800K. That is a drop off of two-thirds of its audience. That is catastrophic and unsustainable for a program that costs so much to produce. Nine would be absolutely furious with its ratings performance.

  4. TDJ July 5, 2010 at 12:29 am -

What is this rubbish about Hey Hey it’s Saturday. I would not call 800 plus thousand people a freaking bad result. Not that ratings mean crap anyway. It did a hell of a lot better than the cricket or that putrid Footy Show and I don’t see people bucketing those. At least Hey Hey is entertaining and they are not trying to screw money out of idiots over the phone. I find it amazing that so many people are supposedly watching a rigged cooking show. I have an idea for a couple of more interesting shows. One where you can watch paint dry and one where you can watch grass grow. Oh sorry, that is called cricket.

  5. andrew July 5, 2010 at 12:00 am -

@ Jarred. Sorry Jarred you seem to be blinded by your love for AFL or you work for them. Your arguments don’t stack up mate, You say the record numbers attending AFL games may be the reason why the TV viewing audience is down. That is rubbish average crowd this year is up 37353 for 2010, the record average crowd is in 2008 not 2009 and it was 36996 for the home and away season. Does the 357 average increase in crowd numbers equate to tens of thousands less in a TV viewing audience I suspect not. How does it explain that the AFL’s TV numbers seem to be diminishing year by year. Just to add mate if non Victorian teams are struggling and those in Melbourne are on top, why are the numbers out of Melbourne so low. It seems even on Friday nights the Rugby out rates the AFL. Your arguments are ridiculous and you call me naive, I think you can’t see past your nose without seeing the three letters AFL. To be honest mate I don’t care about AFL or Rugby for that matter, but lets deal with Facts, when a organization is asking for a billion dollars for something that is really worth half that (If they are lucky).

has anyone else noticed the networks volume has gone down? i had to put my tv up to 70 volume just to hear it properly where as last week 30 would be too loud. anyone else getting this prob?

  8. Allie July 4, 2010 at 5:36 pm -

Hey Seven, sure you fit enough ads into your broadcast of “Ratatouille” last night? It should have been called “Ad-atouille, because to me it was like watching non-stop advertisements with an occasional movie break. Fair dinkum, that was just extreme. I rarely watch the childrens movies that Seven often run on Saturday nights, but if they are normally as ad heavy as that, then they are treating their audience with contempt.

  9. Jerome July 4, 2010 at 4:57 pm -

AFL ratings continue to disapoint, $1bil is looking less likely by the week.

  10. Kyle July 4, 2010 at 4:46 pm -

  11. aznfratboy July 4, 2010 at 4:44 pm -

Great to see ABC top the charts on Saturday nights, hope they are able to win some more nights during the week.

  12. Jarred July 4, 2010 at 3:42 pm -

    @ Andrew,
They may be the same teams (which is changing in the next couple of years) but they are certainly not giving us the same stuff. Last night was not the same old stuff that the Crows have given us in the first half of this year. AFL changes every week with ups and downs for each team, thats just one of the beauty’s of our great game.
Saying viewers are bored is a very naive, generalised and inacurrate statement. From my post last week, ratings may be down because more people are actually attending the game with record attendances last year. Also, the non-victorian teams aren’t doing as well in recent years and so non-victorian viewers aren’t as high.

  13. Ryan July 4, 2010 at 3:02 pm -

I’m sick to death of networks playing movies we have seen a thousand times!! its pathetic and its treating us like idiots! I mean edtv and fantastic 4 is just poor programming, i’m glad they bombed major and hope ten open their eyes and start giving us newish movies

  14. Daniel July 4, 2010 at 3:01 pm -

Network Ten are idiots, putting on Bondi Vet preview on 8.30 thursday next week, no-one wants to see a bloody preview, just put Rush S3 on, you already delayed it enough

  15. Scott July 4, 2010 at 1:15 pm -

Disappointing to see that only 148,000 people watched The Fountain – one of the great films of recent years. Should have been shown on the main channel.

  16. Craig July 4, 2010 at 12:58 pm -

Did everyone forgot about TEN last night?

  17. Andrew July 4, 2010 at 12:16 pm -

Pathetic ratings for the AFL on Saturday night again. I suspect viewers are bored of the same old teams giving us the same old rubbish all the time. Seven should spend their money on something else , if this pattern continues

@Tom, even though I’m not a fan of Masterchef I do think that you are right in that it is taking a lot of Hey Hey’s audience. They’re both seen as sort of family shows, and since Masterchef is on every day of the week (apart from Saturday – where Hey Hey can possibly sit basically like it used to), people don’t want to miss out on the Wednesday show of it when that as well as Sunday’s are one of the biggest nights of the week for MC. So I wish Hey Hey started up more earlier when it was on against Biggest Loser. That and if Hey Hey doesn’t go back to Saturdays, it just has to ride the tide until MC finishes later this month.

Speaking for myself though, when given a choice of live entertainment or watching people eating and cooking, I choose the live entertainment. It would be a harder choice if it was Big Brother on then which I used to like… I guess, I’d still choose Hey Hey as it was live and watch Big Brother through 10’s catch up service, but not a lot like to use the catch-up services if they don’t really need to.

  21. Steve July 4, 2010 at 12:43 am -

Wow, shocking figures for Hey Hey. I don’t even think Pauley Perrette could fix this mess.

  22. Jason D. July 3, 2010 at 9:50 pm -

It’s interesting to see M*A*S*H up there with somewhat decent figures, considering that it’s been repeated numerous times.

  23. Daniel July 3, 2010 at 4:42 pm -

Wow MC Masterclass is getting better. They only time it was really a winner, was the last one of season 1. Right before the Sunday finale. I assume the ‘adults only’ eggs bendict was one and the fact they had chocolate making from a renown chocolate maker, and Gary made Gateaux Opera. This is a fine layer cake of, cake biscuit, [ganconde], coffee and chocolate. I’m sure people must have had interest in this?

  24. Tim Jong July 3, 2010 at 4:36 pm -

Please don’t axe the show again, you can put Hey Hey back on Saturday nights or a four or five ‘specials’ across the year for next year.

We love Hey Hey as it’s the only variety show we have, that has live bands and good old entertainment!

The twenty shows are back-firing before Daryl’s eyes as he persuaded David Gyngell to sign a 20 show agreement. Nine was originally going to do eight or nine shows. It was inevitable with twenty shows that the show’s ratings would drop!!

You think you’d need to re-jig the format, in order for the show to survive and Not just a few of new segments!! Before Hey Hey It’s Saturday returned this year, you even said there would be changes to the show. But it is still the same from 1971.

  25. Ryan July 3, 2010 at 4:17 pm -

looks like people are realising how good masterclass is, since its the hosts showing you how to cook and all the secrects of the trade its great for us home cooks to learn. Gotta say i wanted so badly to dive into that chocolate they were making!!

  26. Tom July 3, 2010 at 3:56 pm -

hey hey beat Celebrity MasterChef last year not MasterChef

60% hey hey fans are watching MasterChef its a game show (5 days a week) they watch it to see who gets vote out each night

Ch 9 was silly putting hey hey on with MasterChef (no1 show)

  27. DAN July 3, 2010 at 3:29 pm -

good to see masterchef masterclass picking up a bit it really is a good show

  28. John Jackson July 3, 2010 at 3:14 pm -

@Patrick I can only speak for myself (although I imagine those that say they like Hey Hey or any other show on TV are doing the same – apart from those that say they can’t watch it on Wednesdays as they aren’t free – so prefer it on Sat), but I am watching Hey Hey (I think it is the most important Australian TV show outside of the various news related programs), the only thing is… myself nor others have ratings boxes! Tell me where or how to get one and I’ll sign up! I’ve wanted one for years so I could support all the shows I like (Smallville, Neighbours, Micallef Tonight, The Mick Molloy Show, rove live etc).

If you like certain music, you can go out and buy it, and the record companies and artists know how many people are interested as they either count ticket sales to concerts or how many copies a certain single/album sold. If people are interested in a movie then they buy the DVD or buy a ticket to it at the cinemas.. and the movie studios know how many DVD copies or tickets were sold as they can be measured as well.

Yet things like how many people like radio and TV programs are false. They don’t properly measure them. People can’t properly support their fave shows like they can with music and movies. They should somehow put something into set top boxes, and digital tuners and foxtel units, etc so they can get at least a somewhat better reading rather than relying on such a small elusive sample of people to represent the whole of Australia, or just send ratings boxes to every residence.

@John can’t work that way for Hey Hey as then not everybody will be able to get there, and that doesn’t provide any help to the local and overseas stars to perform/appear in prime time on free to air TV. Hey Hey should be respected in that field at least.. providing the only outlet for them to appear on currently. I love 7PM project as well for being a live show and allowing guests, but the show can be too short for some guests, and doesn’t allow performances like The Panel used to.

Besides that I don’t understand the haters. I guess haters just gotta hate on anything they can. I look at the show, and I think.. ‘What is to hate?’Unless you’re just against fun suitable for families and live TV.’

  30. Tom July 3, 2010 at 10:47 am -

you all talk about jokes on hey hey

tell me what show have good jokes on it

7pm Project just rove old jokes
Good news week old news (do it Live)
    Gruen Transfer boring ads jokes

  31. Patrick July 3, 2010 at 9:06 am -

Shannon – sorry but one of the reasons that Hey Hey is badly underperforming is that so called fans who come on here defending the show simply aren’t putting their money where their mouths are and watching it.

We live in a democracy where we can either love/hate a show but those defending Hey Hey should back up their claims by switching on every week – which they clearly are Not doing!

There are various reasons why the show hasn’t worked this year – the format hasn’t been updated, the old fashioned style of presenting/jokes, the timeslot, etc, etc.

Given all of that though, the fans who joined the many Facebook groups insisting it come back simply have done the show a dis-service by turning away from it and then complaining about others who allegedly try to pull the show down – if only I had that kind of power!

Hey Hey is doomed and should have only returned as an occassional special – maybe 4 a year – instead of the costly 20 ep order which Ch 9 are now stuck with – they must be furious at the disastrous ratings.

So please, those who defend the show tell me that you’ve been watching it every single week and then I’ll pay attention…!

  32. john July 2, 2010 at 9:56 pm -

@shannon, there is obviously something wrong with the show if the show has lost half its audience. Perhaps thay can do the show at an RSL every sat night and all the lovers can go and buy a ticket and watch

  33. Craig July 2, 2010 at 9:48 pm -

The problem with Hey Hey is it should be on Saturday nights!

Cougar Town is good, not as good as the Modern Family but still good, maybe it will be moved to 7TWO.

I agree the TEN should have aired the Glee final sooner, it will be 4 weeks old by the time it aired next week.

  34. Joe July 2, 2010 at 9:00 pm -

Could you please show the Thursday night afl ratings for one hd. As they rate ones ratings separate from tens ratings even though both may be showing the same program at the same time

  35. Harry July 2, 2010 at 7:40 pm -

Rush is premiering on the 22nd July according to some Herald Sun reporter on Twitter for its 3rd Season.

  36. Shannon Butler July 2, 2010 at 5:58 pm -

Nothing wrong with Hey Hey or Daryl the only thing wrong Is all the haters who winge about a show they dont have to watch .

  37. Dino July 2, 2010 at 5:18 pm -

    16 Hey Hey It’s Saturday Nine 801,000 231,000 314,000 125,000 74,000 58,000

Big lulz moment. Goodbye Hey Hey and Darryl.

  38. Allie July 2, 2010 at 4:30 pm -

Seven needs to axe CougarTown now. It has bomb written all over it. I predict it will be out of the Top 30 in a fortnight.

  39. Daniel July 2, 2010 at 2:50 pm -

In your face network ten, should of put Glee finale on instead of AFL

  40. meiji-era July 2, 2010 at 2:49 pm -

ABC2 had a Great Thursday night,I enjoyed Gavin and Stacey and Graham Norton

  41. callas July 2, 2010 at 1:43 pm -

@BOB… too true !!… i loved the reunions and even the beginning of this season but over the last few weeks it has fallen flat and the same flatness is evidenced over its very long 2 hours yet they dont seem to do anything to fix it.

  42. Craig July 2, 2010 at 1:42 pm -

@John – the anti-siphoning laws prevent them from doing that, so ask the government to change things.

  43. Tom July 2, 2010 at 9:38 am -

hey hey is over 28 years old and its still getting over 800,000 Wow
will we see Masterchef on tv in 30 years

  44. John July 2, 2010 at 2:24 am -

I think Hey Hey needs to be moved swiftly to Saturday nights where it faces little competition.

Channel 9 have 3 channels (9, 9HD, 99GO). Why didn’t they run the tennis on one and the cricket on another? They’ve just annoyed both sets of fans.

  45. darryn July 1, 2010 at 11:29 pm -

So at 11-15pm, as we are into an enthralling 2nd set of tennis at wimbledon, nine is still showing the footy show. Please explain, very slowly David as I am obviously missing something, why FTA is running such a hard campaign to show these sports that they are not showing?, Send the lot to pay, at least I know I will get to see it all.

  46. Guido-jacko July 1, 2010 at 11:11 pm -

    Bring back Jackson Jive!

  47. darryn July 1, 2010 at 10:00 pm -

Vicky, its called dishing up to the lowest common denominator. lucky to get 3 brain cells in the 2 million viewers.

  48. BOB July 1, 2010 at 8:08 pm -

Hey Hey is not raying well as it has now lost the nostalgia factor the specials had.
People do not want to tune in each week see the same jokes same gag sounds same cartoons and have darryl rabbit on about nothing,

  49. Harry July 1, 2010 at 7:16 pm -

MC is really holding TEN up at the moment – when MC finishes, TEN will perform dismally.

  50. barrett July 1, 2010 at 7:02 pm -

At the rate Hey Hey ratings are dropping it will be back on Saturdays…..mornings!

  51. Ryan July 1, 2010 at 6:27 pm -

i’ve noticed ten are playing some of the latest simpsons in widescreen which is good, so much better. next they should play season 1! Good on Mc to get over 2m! Lie to me should be doing better than that but still a good figure

  52. Vicky July 1, 2010 at 4:55 pm -

Hey Hey its Saturday is not rating well because they haven’t got and good overseas guests on. The one show which rated good was when Usher and Craig David was on.

Also why are so many people watching masterchef. It’s such a boring show!!!!!!!!!!

  53. tom July 1, 2010 at 4:46 pm -

The Gruen Transfer starts at 9 Masterchef is over at 9
its hey hey vs Masterchef 7.30 to 9.30 for ratings so its hard for hey hey

  54. RichoTB July 1, 2010 at 4:30 pm -

Hooray for HHIS getting such atrocious figures and coming 4th in its slot. Goes to show reviving dead shows is not the way to fix your ratings problems. Ch 9 should come up with something original rather than boring crime factuals. Why would anyone be interested in Random Breath Testing and Australian Druglords?

  55. DAN July 1, 2010 at 4:22 pm -

@Nik c yeah i am no cook but even i can make scones so if i can do it anyone should be able to

great to see MC hit 2 mill
